In NJ the use of a bow and arrow for frogs is not specifically included, therefore it is excluded. I am attempting to get the language of the code changed to allow it.
Having spoken to the the head of the Freshwater Fisheries department she suggested that along with names of others interested in making this change I include a list of other states that allow it so she can have her biologists contact those biologists to discuss the impact, etc.
So, if your state does allow it, please let me know. If you have a link to the regs that would be nice, but not necessary.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Mitch if I remember correctly you can bow fish for frogs. By definition bowfishing can be achieved by just fashioning a string to your arrow. ;)
But i understand what your saying about getting it changed so it states bows.
my state of ohio now lets us take frogs an turtles.this is the first time i have know them to let us.i know it used to be illegal.i think the website is www.wildohio.com. (http://www.wildohio.com.) you can also try odnr.com.the last one is the department of natural resources.good luck, steve
Dave,
I called F&G and frogs may not be taken with a bow and arrow according to them.
The bowfishing code does not include frogs either.
You can do it Texas....
You can legally take frogs with a bow in Kansas but You arrow must have a barbed tip and be attached to your bow with a string.
I assume any bow-fishing rig will work.
bretto
Not a problem here in Missouri.
God bless,Mudd
We here in the soviet state of N.J. are on the verge of getting a bear hunt, and all it took was voting out a Governor and some legislators. To be able to hunt frogs is going to be a big up hill battle and most of us probably won't still be alive by the time they make a decision, but have at it as it is the only way my great, great, grandchildren will be able to go frogging.
Seriously good luck.
Ken
It's legal in Tennessee and Kentucky.
Not legal here in Michigan, sure wish it was!
It has actually been legal for several years now here in Ohio. You just had to look real hard for it in the law book.
New York it is allowed, not sure if you need a small game license. It may require a fishing license.
Not in CT. They're classified as "bait" and the regs specify how they may be taken.
NY requires a small game lic. to take frogs by bow, gun, spear or club. fishing lic. to take with a pole
It's legal in IL, although we do have a season and bag limits.
Working on it here in Michigan!!! Sent an e-mail to the DNRE and just got a reply. It will be up for discussion so the ball is rolling!
The only concern I got was for public safety, but if it's written to abide by bowfishing regulations then we should be alright.
its legal in indiana

Dang I know that last time I went bout 2 years ago it was legal to bowfish them. I'm gonna take a look at the fishing book.
Arwin-That is cool! I have quite a few spots that I can shoot frogs and there are good numbers of the. One of those wide HTM blunts would work really well on those critters.
Legal here in KY. Must have hunting license to use a bow and arrow, fishing or hunting license to use a gig.

It is legal in Arkansas not sure reg though
It use to be legal here in Nebraska, but since they put a size limit on them, only legal take now is hand, net or hook and line.
Bretto beat me to it, its legal in Kansas. Turtles are a no go though...

Thanks for the input. I am hopeful that this will strengthen the argument for.
We can bow fish and why not frogs.it states you have to follow the size and bag limits for the fish species if it aint listed it has no limit or it's not protected. So shoot it.Oh and the less attention you bring to what your doing the less attention you will have when your done doing it.

Originally I was told by a CO that I couldn't use a bow for frogs. I called the head of the Freshwater Fisheries to confirm. The specific language under the MEANS OF TAKE section for frogs and snapping turtles states "...spears, hooks, dip nets, traps or by hand..."
Accordingly I was told that I cannot use a bow for frogs. Regardless of whether frogs are listed under bowfishing, the MEANS OF TAKE supercedes that.
Would a 40# bow be enough for a mature bull frog? :D
Mitch
As you know NJ has not found a way to make a lot of money from bow fishing yet, thats why the law is written the way it is.find a private pond and have some fun. When they figure it all out we will have to buy a buck stub for a male frog ,so they can make another $32.00 from us. :coffee:
It is legal in OK. We can bowfish them, gig them, grab them, net them, and hunt them with a gun and spotlight. wildlifedepartment.com is where the regs can be found
