Last week while hunting alligators with the Langers I mentioned that my daughter wanted to hunt bears. Wham, bam, and a call to Tony and Bill arranged for Jennifer to hunt bears next week with Tony and Squapan. I just got off the phone with Tony and Jen is going to be hunting next week. Tony mentioned there will be several TradGangers in camp and I was just wondering who is going and what tips do you have for my 16 year old daughter as a 1st time bear hunter.
I'll be tagging along as a non-hunter who will be filming the hunt for Bill Langer.
We are very excited to be in camp and hunting bears and are very grateful to Tony and Bill.
Jen's gonna do great! Looking forward to the texts..hint hint
I will be there the second week with a buddy.
Good luck to you!
You guys will have a blast. You will be in great company!!!
Curt, I'll be sure to text! If I get any reception up there I can do a "semi-live" with photos.
Best of luck to you too BMejia. Is this your first time up? If not, any tips?
 :archer2:
Really hope we can make it a trip of a lifetome for you and Jen! Were very excited to meet you guys!
Tony
Good Luck Jen,
Terry, you better hold the camera still, I dont want to watch the Bear witch project :biglaugh:
Cant wait for pics and stories.
How cool! That girl will get it done. Have fun and be safe guys!
Nice. Can't wait for that story to surface. Gonna be a good one.
Thanks everyone! I too hope Jen has fun and am confident Tony will do all he can to make it a memorable trip! Thanks Tony!
Jen seems to have nerves of steel. She never flinched while shooting the 10' alligator at 3' and put an arrow right between the shoulder blades of a charging wild boar at about 2'. The video of the shot is great. She has been pretty fearless since she was a baby. Hopefully, we'll see how she does with a bear within 15 yards.
Just look at that face. It has killer written all over it!

Thanks again everyone and I'll keep everyone posted.
We'd be grateful for any tips you have.
IndianaBowman,
Yes this is my first time going there, first time bait bear hunting anywhere for that matter.
The first week should be a blast. Tony has the Black Widow guys in camp along with a lot of other recurve/longbow hunters.
My daughter starts first grade that week or I certainly would have opted for that week.
Have fun and let us know how you do!
Brian
It's just great what you are doing with her. We need more woman hunters! Best of luck to her and you.
Look out bear!!! One of you is going on a one way trip to Kinderhook, probaly the biggest one in the woods so if you know whats good for you den up today.Good luck folks have fun and be safe.
That is awesome Terry! Good luck to Jen!!! I really hope you are able to do a semi live report.
Terry that is great to hear. I have full confidence that Jen will get the job done if given the chance.......(no pressure there huh Jen?)
Can't wait to hear about the trip......
David
I'll be there the first week myself. Looking forward to meeting every one.
Sean, you can't be far from me. I'm in Columbia County and have hunted the Carvel property several times. Have you been to JLMBH?
I'll planning to spend a few days in camp, not as a hunter just as a bear tracker, dragger outer, skinner & camera man if anyone needs one. I'm good freinds with Tony & Lynn & recently started shooting a bow & am looking forward to meeting some fellow trad hunters.
They are first class people & will bend over backwards to make your hunt a great one.
Look forward to meeting you guys & girls
Wesley
Terry, You want tips?
How bout this Bring a bigger cooler! ;) ;) :readit:
No doubt you'll be needing it!
Terry, this year was my first time up at the JLMBH. It was great. I went up with Woodchucker. I'm about 15 miles east of Poughkeepsie, in LaGrangeville.
Terry ,glad everything worked out with Jen and your schedule, wish I could be there.I've been there the last four or five years and will surly miss it.When Toby asked Jen how big her bear is just say it's just a little shy of four hundred lbs. Best of luck.
God willing, Good weather,Straight shooting and it should all come togeather!Drive safe everyone! See ya in camp 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!I'm pulling for Jen and Toby's son to set the bar!
Tony
There will be six of us from Missouri there the first week. Probably arriving on Sat. evening. Jim Pyles
Good luck Jen-we know you can get it done.
Good luck to everyone.
Wish we could be there but Mom and the four kids all start school that week so we are taking this year off-sure gonna miss it!!!
-Bill
Bill and Dick, we sure wish you were going to be there as well. I'm sure we could learn volumes about hunting from you two.
Dick, I'm sure there is a story behind the "just shy of 400#s" comment. I'll be sure to find out from Toby.
Tony, we are just excited to be in camp and sharing in the camaraderie and beauty of the great Northeast. Now, if a bear walks in and offers Jen a shot, that would just be icing on an already sweet cake.
Jim - from Missouri huh? This oughta be good. I know some "Show Me" folks and they generally ain't all there. I'm pretty darn sure that there will be plenty of fun and stories to go around. Looking forward to meeting you and your crew.
Always happy to meet a fellow tradganger. Hope Tony has enough wood for our fires in the evenings. We used a whole seasons worth last year. So many stories we all needed hip boots.
I'm looking forward to it. I hope every one has a safe trip. see you all in camp!
Well its finally here! Baits are ready, Cabins are ready, Now all we need is some hunters! And they're on the way! I'm excited to meet our new and old friends. Drive safe and we'll see you all over the weekend!
Tony
Can't wait to get there. See you all there, Big Ed
Can't wait Tony! We will be rolling in on Sunday by early afternoon. Thanks again and see you soon.
Good luck Terry, Jen and everyone else.
Keep us posted
-Bill
Terry.......are you out there? I heard rumor of semi-live bear hunt reports. :readit:
Arrived in camp yesterday and the fun and BSing have begun.
Toby and his son Miles are raring to go as are all the other hunters. Miles is pretty adament about getting a bear "just a hair" closer to being under 400#s than his dad's.
I'll start the "semi-live" on another thread.
  Go get 'em Jen!!!!!
David
Have at it Jen.Good for you girl..Terry remember to hit record.Good luck to all.
I have no doubts how this will end! Be safe and have fun everyone!!
So any update on the hunt..Pix or anything...
As of yesterday lots of bears killed...but Jen's bear hadn't shown itself yet...
Terry's having phone issues.
Still  for Jen!!
Sorry to report no bear for Jen, they left camp tonight, the temp's have been in the 90's all week & that's way to hot.
Great bunch of guy's in camp, glad to meet all of you.
Sorry no semi-live hunt report. Unfortunately, I had to put a lot of work time in while in bear camp. There really should be a law against that.
Anyway, Jen and I had a fantastic week with a bunch of really great guys and Lynn of course.
Jen did get a lesson in hunting and understanding that sometimes the game just doesn't cooperate. She was amazing though. I've hunted with a lot of guys over the years and she can stand up with the best of them. We all know what it takes to be successful for bear, dear, or many other species when ambush hunting. Stillness and quiet. I couldn't have done better myself.
Despite horrible conditions for bear hunting Tony did a phenomenal job and all but Jen and maybe Jim saw and/or had an opportunity for a bear. Hopefully Tony will jump in with the full bear sighting and shooting report. Even though Jen didn't see a bear she never once complained and kept me in camp all week to give her the very best chance for a bear. She was poised and ready all the way until 7:40 PM tonight (end of legal hunting). She couldn't have hunted harder and I was very proud of her efforts. More later.
And who said sitting over bait was duck soup or should I say bear soup? Glad you both had a good time.
Thanks to Bill and Dick Langer for setting the hunt up for us. Jen didn't kill a bear, but it was a successful hunt. What better way to spend a week with your daughter than in bear camp.
We had a great time with the Black Widow Boys and it was fun hanging around with Miles (those in camp know what we mean). We also got to meet some great new friends and Jen wants to go back and hunt with Tony, Lynn, and Josh.
Thanks to all for a great time.
Here is Jen with our host Tony Boucher

Sounds like a good time was had by all, success is not measured by the kill but rather by the experience itself.
Great pics Terry. How bad were the bugs and what measures did you use against them? I was wondering if that's the Shannon bug suit that Jen is wearing.
I'm glad she wants too go back, that's a bowhunter!
VTer, I think that it was so hot and dry that the bugs were virtually non-existent. We had a ThermaCell but didn't have to use. We didn't use anything and you could have exposed skin with no problem.
Yep, Jen wants to go back and she even asked about deer hunting locally. I think she has the bug.
Great experience for the two of you :campfire: :clapper:
She'll get one next year.Glad you all had fun.
Hey Terry, I'm glad that you and Jen made it home safely. Nothing was seen Saturday afternoon, even after the weather broke.
Sean, did the 3rd brother find the bear he shot?
Also, how's BigEd doing? Did Jim ever see a bear?
It was great meeting you and spending time in camp with you. I now know what "Living History" is. I had no idea.
Terry,
the 3rd brother had a clean miss. Big Ed seems to be doing well, but I believe was a little sore after his mishap. I'll let him relay that to the list.
No, Jim didn't see a bear. It was great meeting you as well. Jen is a heck of a fire starter!
Terry it was great meeting you, Jen, Sean and everybody else in camp, Kent it was really great to see you again. Brad ended up getting the only archery bear in camp ( his first ). I think he is fireman brad on here. Even tho I did not see a bear it was a very successful hunt. Saw old friends, met new friends and just had a heck of a good time. Tony,Dave and the 2 Reno's could not have worked harder or done anything else to make our stay enjoyable. Lynn the food was excellent as always. Hope to see you all soon. Have a good season and be safe. Did you here that Big Ed?? Jim Pyles
Holy smokes, what a blast!!!!
Jim,thanks again for letting me tag along with you!!
Tony, Lynn, and the rest of gang, thanks for everything!!
Dr. Dave, you da MAN!!!!
Was a great camp, fun to meet folks from tradgang especially!!!
Jim, you're supposed to tell em I got the BIGGEST bowkill in camp, not the ONLY bowkill!!!lol!!
I'll start a pic thread, if noone else has, I"ve got a ton of them!!!
I can't wait to kill another bear!!!!
Thanks little buddy!! I had a little mishap with a tree stand strap that broke. Thankfully I had a harness on or it could have been very ugly. Please everyone wear your harness's your first step onto the stand could very easily you last. Tie in before settling into your stand.
The guys work there rears off at Squapan Mtn. Be sure to check them out if you want a great experience. Big Ed (PS:Might be time for a diet)LOL
BigEd, I'm glad you're OK. I didn't get a chance to see you before we had to head home and Jen and I were a bit worried. You're a little big to be swinging around on a safety harness.
Thanks again for all you did for Jen. It really means a lot to me to have such a positive influence around her. We look forward to hunting with you again soon. It won't be long and we can have a father/daughter hunt.
You can also put on a lobster bake line none other. I've always heard you shouldn't trust a skinny cook. I was very trusting with you cooking! : )
Have a great season.
Glad you are ok Ed, thnak God you had a harness on.
Sounds like all had a great week up there.....
David
Big Ed, glad you're OK. Good advice on hooking in. I wouldn't worry about dieting just go to chain-on stands, I've never trusted those wimpy belts anyways. Besides, you don't want to be "Average Ed".
That was one of the best groups that I've hunted with. Going up alone wasn't a problem. I feel that I've made a few good friends. After shooting with these guys, I was a bit humbled, and a little intimidated. All you boys could shoot. ( and Jen too).
I had my cast removed from my hand the Friday before I left, and was concerned about shooting my bow. Big Ed offered me his bow, was a little lighter than mine at my shorter draw length. I didn't need it but I was grateful just the same. thanks Ed.
Tony and Lynn Boucher made every one feel at home. His guides worked like heck for us. The food was great, the conversation was excellent, the accommodations didn't lack a thing. I passed up a bear on the second day, and Tony still worked hard to put me on more bears. I can't say enough about Squapan Outfitters.
Fireman 3311 you know we are going back in 2012 and you are always welcome in our camps. Hoping the whole gang comes back. We need to help Doctor Dave redeem himself. Till then we need to pray fore a cooler season. 90s are bad. 40's are good. Keep repeating.
I'm hoping to make that trip in 2012!!! We'll have to get Dr. Dave to pad those seats a wee bit too!!!
Jen and Terry
Glad that you had a great time together.
I wish the hunting was better-and I wish we could have been with you in camp.
But this gives us an excuse for next year!!!!
Talk to you soon.
-Bill
Bill The bear stole my preventilated barrel, never did find it. Put a bucket under some logs, thief stole that also.
:archer:
Bill, were in for next year, if Tony will have us. He could be full already?
Tony was a little upset with Jen not getting an oppourtunity. But it is hunting and Jen gave it her all. Always next year for sure!! Big Ed
Tony did a great job. Jen had a great time. A bear would've simply been icing on an already good cake. It was actually probably a pretty good thing for her to see hunting isn't always as easy as she has had it. She is determined to get a bear and we'll keep going until she does.
