Well like the plumber with a leaky pipe I finally settled on my setup for our Moose hunt. Heck we got til Thursday right? LOL
Anyway I'm shooting a 17" Dryad Epic riser and Long recurve limbs. The riser is Myrtle and Coco and the limbs are black with Actionwood cores. Weight is 53 @ 30.5.
Jason is shooting the mirror image riser and long curve limbs with bamboo cores. His is 54 @ 29 1/2.
We both shoot the same arrow.
Arrows are GT biggame 100s 31", 100 gr brass inserts with Abowyer Brown Bear heads and aluminum adapters. Makes the arrow 667 gr. with 300 gr upfront. 12 gpp with a 21% foc.
Flys like a dart!!
Been shooting and tuning for a couple of weeks now and this is it.
Now we just need a big ol' moose to get in the way.

I heard the best place to shoot a moose was in the road.
-
Yeah good luck.
-
Best of luck on your hunt!

You're going to be shooting Dryads? What a surprise! Have a great trip and be safe. The moose (if you get one or two) will only be an added bonus to top off a fantastic adventure.

Good choices....now what did you decide for your backup bows? I'm a firm support in having a backup bow that i am as comfortable shooting as my primary. LOL...you just thought all of your decisions where made! Easy way for picking a backup is....the bow that you where contemplating bring but decided on the other bow.
I have a moose hunt scheduled September 27 - October 5th in northwest canada. I have decided on my primary bow 3 piece tree stick from Acadian Woods that pulls 51#'s at 29.5" and shooting full lenght 3555 Goldtip Traditional arrows with 3rivers weight tube inserts (black ones 3 grains per inch)with 165 grain Zwickey no mercy single beveled broaheads. I have 12 hunitng arrows made up already 6 with the Zwickeys and 6 with 150 grain Grizzley single bevels. I just got my Bison Gear pack and will have all of my daily needs packed nicely in it.
My backup bow will be my recently aquired Bear Takedown signed by Fred Bear and Frank Scott...still trying to decide on the limbs but know the riser is making the trip! Given the MOJO that those 2 gentelmans should give that riser....i may be wearing it arround my neck for good luck!
Good Hunting to you

Sounds like a "moose steaks" setup to me!

Michael
When you shoot a 3 pc bow you don't really need a back-up bow... just a spare set of limbs with specs. very close to the ones you plan on using. I have a Shawnee/Dakota set up just that way [ 2 sets of Dakota "D" longbow limbs.. 1@57# and 1@58# ]..sure makes the planning simple. and saves space in the luggage for extra long underware for those cold Moose hunts :biglaugh:

Sounds like two winning set-ups....good luck! :archer2:

The thing about Jason's and my setups is we can shoot each others and John's is very close too.
So we are each others backup bows.

Good luck fella's!!!

Moose hunting is a blast. Have fun. Good Luck!
-
Wingnut, how are you liking those actionwood limbs? Hope you and Jason get so much meat you can't hardly get it all out.
Have a great time and remember what Rod taught us when the moment arrives.
-
Actually we have switched from maple to AW for our basic core wood and I like it a lot. It's not bamboo but it's a lot better then maple.
Mike

Hope you have a wonderful adventure and anxiously await the tale told here with hero pics.
What is the current turn around time for a set of longbow limbs?
-
Good luck, and post lots of pictures.

Good luck Mike! Give me a shout when you guys get to Tok if you have a chance. I may be out early in the general season. I'm leaving later today for the early hunt that opened yesterday & closes this saturday. As you may already know caribou opens the 29th for the area that you are moose hunting but it might be already closed by the time that you get here. Later...
-
John,
Send me a PM with your phone number so I can give you a call. Also might need to unloads some moose meat if we get real lucky.
Mike

Mike - Sent you a couple of emails including answering your caribou question. Moose meat is always accepted. My buddy Terry has a cooler & freezer set up for chilling meat & storage if you need it. 40 Mile has his number posted there.
Have fun playing tourist. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for you. Its raining some here today so I expect to get a bit soaked going in to my camp this afternoon.
Later - John
