Title: Following suit...Who's from Michigan
Post by: Mike Vines on August 21, 2010, 10:53:00 PM
I was born here (Clarkston), lived all over the world due to my Dad's job, and me being in the US ARMY, but I was glad to move back to Michigan and have 4 very pronounced seasons.

Who else do we have in this wonderful state?

It's funny so many are from the Clarkston area. My family owned the lake that was across from where Seymore lake road hits M-15. The lake with the old white ranch house. My family owned that lake from the 1950's until just recently.

I grew up fishing and hunting there.

Grew up in the suburbs south of Detroit.

Live "up north" now. I`d go over the bridge if it wasn`t for starving to death.

I'm in Wellston - - between Cadillac and Manistee.  Might have 4 seasons, but that "white" one seems to be much longer than the others.  Rumor is that lake effect is going to be bad this year.

Yes. But there's a 20 acre lake there too, straight behind the white house, although it's tough to see from M-15. It's across the road from Huff lake. My family also owned property on the lake across from Lake Louise. I believe it's legal name is Long Lake, but we always just called it "the back lake". A buddy told me there's a develpoment there now that's basically stalled/abandoned due to the housing bust.

Frankly, I haven't been down there in about 10 years and I don't care to see how everything has changed.

Things have certainly changed around there. I remember as a kid, when we'd night fish for bass or bullheads and there'd be a car coming down M-15 every couple of minutes. After midnight, it could be 20 minutes between cars. Now you couldn't get out of that driveway due to traffic most of the time.

The only places to eat were the A&W, Renders restaurant and the Nickelodean, back when the the restauarant was in the front, where the beer store moved to. If anyone was around there then, you'd remember the nasty live Parrot that was in the old restuarant.

I remember the first housing development of "high end" homes that started off of I-75 and M-15. Back then I remember my dad marveled that anybody with the money to build such homes would choose to move out there, in "the country".

You can never go back to your youth, but my memories were so fond of that place, like a rural Huck Finn paradise, that I don't think I want to see it again.

The fishing and duck hunting was fantastic and the rabbit and pheasant was decent. Oddly enough, I remember the first deer I ever saw there, since there never was any deer there.

It was in the early 1980's and I jumped a doe while rabbit hunting. I couldn't believe it. Seeing a deer there, back then, was as unexpected as seeing a bear there. Of course, now there's deer all over down there.

The lake produced some whopper pike. The biggest was a 22 pounder that I caught on a July late afternoon in 1977, after seeing Mark Fidrych pitch a in a losing effort at a 1:00 pm start at Tiger stadium. Quite a day! LOL

I've lived all over the eastern part of the state. Grew up in Bad Axe, settled in the Ann Arbor/Ypsialnti area for a while after I got out of the Navy. I now live in North Branch and work in Waterford. I've hunted the same chunk of real estate in Bad Axe most of my hunting life, but looking to move to Kentucky in a few years as soon as my youngest son is out of school.

I will take you up on that offer.  I have been reluctant to put in for one, seeing as I don't know the first thing about elk, except they are bigger than deer, and don't live in the woods I hunt.

What is amazing is all the different cities and towns mentioned don't have much if anything in common except that there are guys/gals from each one of them with a common thread...Traditional Archery.

So with all the Trad hunters in Michigan, why have I NEVER run into another Trad hunter in the woods in over 20 years of hunting!!!!?????

We must just be sneaky!

Good question Overspined!

It have run into other Trad hunters only twice.
Once it was two guys from Pennsylvania, and the other time it was Ron Pittsley and his son.

That was the first time I had ever laid eyes on a Predator. (it was camo)

I also remember finding a beautifully done up cedar shaft laying in a two-track. I still have it. I quickly removed the Zwickey Eskimo from it, and put it to work, but whoever the owner of the arrow was, he/she sure had a short draw.

Also born and raised in the great state of Mi. I have been on the western side of the state all my life in the Hart area except during college and a short time out in AZ, too hot for me. I really love this state the seasons and the hunting. We dont have alot of different big game like some of the western states but here you can litterally hunt out the back door. I have killed several deer in site of my house, last year I shot a 8 point watching my wife and little girls in the hot tub. I own 2 buisnesses and things are tough right now and I hate the thought of relocating so hopefully things will get better. If any of you guys here are in the Hart, Silver lake area give me a holler I have lots of targets and room to stump shoot. And a Taxidermy shop with stuff to look at.Don

Born in GR, them moved to Middleville through high school, collage in Detroit.  Short stints in a few other towns in that area. Did a year in Baltimore, and that is it for out of state living.  Moved back to GR and then to Kalamazoo about 20 years ago.

Thirty years ago and more I ran into trad hunters all the time, but that was really before trad was trad.  In the last 20 or so not one.

Isn't that near Lansing?  That is where we are having our annual Michigan Longbow Association Squirrel Hunt this September.  We're going to the Dansville State Game area.  Any tips you might be willing to pass along to us, better yet, why don't you join us.

So with all the Trad hunters in Michigan, why have I NEVER run into another Trad hunter in the woods in over 20 years of hunting!!!!?????

We must just be sneaky!
Well, there's about 380 million acres of land in MI, so that breaks down to about 380,000 acres for each of the 100 or so people that posted here.

I have a hard enough time finding my treestand in the dark and you want me to find another hunter on 380,000 acres??

I was a yooper for 4 years.  I had a place in Trout Lake.  Sold out my share in 1998, and became a traveler since then.  I prefer having a camper as to a vacation house.  It allows me to see much more of the state, and also I'm able to hunt more and different areas.  I really enjoyed my days in the UP, and love traveling back there when I can.
