Title: Hawaii
Post by: Mud Lake Man on August 20, 2010, 02:24:00 PM
My wife is "forcing" me to go to Hawaii for 3 weeks in March 2011. Any tips on where I might wander around with my bow, instead of wasting all my time at the beach? I'm "allowed" to go anywhere I please.  :archer:

Where in Hawaii are going? There is lots of great hunting to be had there just depends on what you want to hunt and what island you are on.

Are you going to Oahu? If so, check out the 3D archery range at Kapolei. It's built on an old coastal artillery emplacement---thick-walled concrete bunkers. Don't miss.

There is a standard version archery range at Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. I used to get on The Bus to go there from where we lived on Nahua Street (across from International Marketplace) in Waikiki.

We used to go hunt pig up on the Pali. Take a compass and a map if you go hunting up there. Easy to get lost in there if you've never been in there.

Only one archery shop on Oahu that I know of. Island Archer over by the airport.

Here's my blog and I post this link just because it has a photo of me on a hunt up in the Waianae Mountains:

Best hunting will be on Maui or Kauai - or so I've heard. I've hiked both islands extensively but during an unfortunate vegan phase in my life. Tough terrain but mind-blowing beauty. Some day I'll go back with the right frame of mind.    :p

Thanks for the info so far. I will likely go to Kauai, unless someone has a better suggestion.
Now can someone provide a bit more detail, please. I'm going there to hunt, not go to an archery range.

I hunted Catalina Island about 30 years ago and it was great fun. Have hunted California and Australia for boars numerous times. Would like to hunt goats again, as well as hunt pigs in a different location.

Thanks
Doug

There are tons of goats north of Kona and south of Waikaloa.  I don't know if this is privatly owned or not, but we drove down to the ocean, and the goats were like rabbits.  In the mountainous parts of Kona, we had to stop plenty of times to let turkey cross the road.  These places are on the Big Island, and that was in 2003.  We were just in Oahu this past April, and I looked into hunting on one of the 2 ranches that are known for pigs, but the price, and success rate wasn't to my liking.  So I opted to take my oldest (Nick 6) shark fishing, where we litteraly had a blast.  We caught 2 Galapagos sharks, and a Threasher shark, not to mention more red snapper than you could shake a longbow at.

The BIG Island is an AWESOME place to hunt BUT figuring out what is public land and crappy state regs make it iffy at best.  Lots of weekend only places and unrealiable military lands that may or may not be open at a whim.  Bet you dig around a bit in some archives and you will find a bit on why I think Kauai is a great bet.....
