Hey gangers I just wanted to share and maybe hear similar tales. I struck a deal with a fellow member for a Boyles recurve. I had to wait to shoot it to get some arras, now that I have I have fell in love with it! I thought I'd found a winner in a mohawk I got a few years ago, but this thing is unbeleivable. She's about 67# @ my draw, I paired her with 31" GG 300's w/250gr. upfront. Evertime I shoot her it feels so good I'm scared its going to wind up pregnant!
i feel the same way about my griffin.
Howard Hill cheetah. I am still wowed: and it is on my 'someday' list.
YES !!!!! the most beautiful RF/DF hy-bred style bow I have ever seen. I would be happy just to "sit n stare" at it for as long as I have. Never really even feeling the need to string and actually shoot it. It was built by Fred Anderson and on display with a few of his other fine bows at the recent TBW shoot in Packwood WA.... I'll never be able to afford one, and Fred is not making many bows anymore....But I can Dream :notworthy:
Gene
All of them, when they first arrive!
Exactly Ben !!
Still in awe each time I shoot my Lone Wolf Autumn Storm Ultra Carbon. As I set it back down to grab it's little brother (52#) I find myself exclaiming "really" It has prompted me to sell a few bows I swore I never would part with.
Five or six years ago my wife told me she would like to bowhunt and she wanted to start with a black bear. I knew with her short draw and inability to shoot much more than 40-45# I needed to find her a really high performing bow other than a compound. It was about the time Dave Soza was finishing up his DAS bow design. I called him and to make a long story short because he had a buy back policy and everything he said made perfect sense I ordered her a bow which I believe was a bit over 45 # at her draw. When the bow arrived I set it up for her took it out to shoot to make sure it was solid and after just one shot I walked back into the house and ordered one for myself. I have been shooting since 1951 and had never shot a bow that was so smooth, dead in the hand, accurate, fast and quiet. That's all I shoot and I love the fact that bowyers are testing and developing ILF limbs. At first us DAS shooters were looked upon as heretics but now it seems everyone is on the iLF bandwagon to some degree. At least we can talk about it with civility on these forums.
My suggestion would be to stop thinking of the bow as a "she" and think of the bow as an "it".
It might be better for your mental health and your sex life.........lol.
I just traded a Widow for a bow I'd never heard of until I did a little research. It's called a Sapphire Hawk and is unbelieveable. I recieved a pair of beautiful juniper limbs as well as a set of double carbons. I can't stop looking at it or shooting it.
Schafers, Hubu and Das to name a few. All beautiful and great shooters. I especially like the adjustability of the Das risers to raise and/or lower limb weight.
Me, totwotoo. It was at the Idaho Trad expo. I met Brent Rudolph there and he handed me a Sheepeater Spirit. I was wowed big time. I still want me one of those bows.
yeah, first time I shot too high and my arrow ricocheted off the top of the fence only to fly 5 houses down on my block. That's when I knew a bow is NO JOKE. I'm still in awe at what my sticks and string can do.
Yup. First time I ever shot a Morrison.
I've been addicted to Bob's work ever since & I can't honestly ever imagine that changing.
There are some great bows out there. How can I contact Fred Anderson? Anyone have some pics?
Yes, when I did a search for Dale Stahl T/D recurves and found a really dressed out one with Curly Maple and Cocobolo in the riser and some special twirls and swirls to boot. I ordered one just like it except with Bocote in place of the Birdseye Maple. I was really awed when I picked the bow up at The Archery Shop last Saturday. It had even more swirls and twirls than the bow I used as a pattern for Dale to build this one. :biglaugh:
I was also awed by a Crow Creek Black Feather I bought in the Classifieds. It has a Bocote and Birdseye Maple Riser with angled stripes of Gaboon Ebony in two locations. The limbs are Bamboo with limb bolt pads and limb tips out of Birdseye Maple with the angled Gaboon Ebony, too. The bow is presently in Elmer's shop for refinishing and he is going to build a matching set of recurve limbs to go with the longbow limbs! :) :biglaugh:
Bill
I haven't shot a lot of different type bows, but the Kwyk Styk is the stick by far
We cannot have this topic without photos!!!
The very first time I shot the first Talon Static recurve I made. It was so much smoother to pull. I just couldn't believe the poundage and how fast the arrow was in the target. It was one of those one more arrow deals where you just have to keep shooting.
To find out how to contact Fred Anderson I would suggest contacting Chris Hill aka "CCH" or Lon Scott aka "Blackhawk" both can be found here on TG, and they are both good friends with Fred...
I have seen and handled, and even been lucky enough to shoot many, many different "Customs" by most of the bowyers past and present. bows owned by myself and others over the years... When I saw "that bow" of Freds on the table it was beyond belief.. like entering a new deminsion of archery, better craftsmanship I have Never encountered in a bow! In talking with him he told me he had right at 60 hours of hands on work into it and it definately shows.
I'm sorry I did not have my camera with me at the shoot.. I could at least look at the picture of it occasionally. ;)
Gene :wavey:
For me it's my 2000 Bighorn Special Edition......
It was made by Ron Nelson and couldn't fit me any better if I had been the one to order it. I've had it for almost 3 years and still sit and admire it all the time. It hangs on the wall in my living room and is a true piece of art, at least to me.

The grip on a Brackenbury recurve is perfect for me. Doesn't matter what they look like, I'm in awe of how comfortable they fit me. I can shoot them better than any other bow. My current Brack and I are getting along very nicely. :)
I am always in awe of how smooth a Hummingbird recurve draws and shoots.
"Awed" by a mere bow? Nah! I've seen some that were indeed beautiful, but it will take more than a bow to awe me--something like the awesome sunrises and sunsets that my Father makes every day....things like streams that babble and gurgle over the rocks...like the five eagles I saw last year flying together--one being a golden with about a 6 foot wing span...a doe nursing twin spotted fawns...these are the things that awe me.
Rose Oak King Panther. Just got number 2. Best I have ever owned and I'm old so I've owned a bunch. Beautiful craftmanship and great to shoot.
Jerry
Want pics...here's my DAS riser with newly fitted Border HEX 5 lilmbs...55# @ 28"...60" length.

I feel that way about my Pittsley Predator Custom Classic. I adore the osage in the riser and especially the copperhead skinned limbs! I am in awe every time I pick it up! And when I shoot it.......I can barely stand it!
I have to vote with David Mitchell on this one. Not that there aren't some pretty bows but nothing compares to the beauty laid before me daily.
God bless,Mudd
I found that perfect bow for me. I wouldn't sell it for any price. I liked it so much I began collecting bows that this bowyer made.
I thought I'd shot enough different bows that I'd seen it all but I shot a BW PSAV and right away I knew that was the bow for me. I picked up a used SAV while I was waiting on my new PSAVX to be built and was really in awe at how good I could shoot the bow right away. I just received my new bow today and it is truly a awesome bow. The limbs are Olive Ash with Ironwood riser 60in long and 50 @ 28in , perfect !
Yep, I sure have been.
A few years ago I had to admit that age and arthritis had taken their toll. I had to put my 60# limbs for my Bear takedown aside and go with the 50# limbs. All of my Bear limbs were old Grayling limbs and I was OK with them.
Then I put a set of 50# Rose Oak limbs on my takedown and shot an arrow. I was completely blown away by the difference in speed. The Rose Oak limbs are smooth and stable and very fast -- faster than the 60# conventional limbs. I was indeed awestruck by the bow with the Rose Oak limbs -- well the new SBD bowstring had something to do with it too. Great performance.
With all the bows I have acquire through the years, there are four that have knocked my socks off...all very special selfbows. It seems those bows have a beating heart :notworthy:
L. E.
I have several of Fred's bows...which one were you awed by :)
Yep.
My best looking bow right now is my Blacktail Elite VL 1-piece. My bow that is the best looker and shooter combo is my Predator Anniversary. My best shooter is my brand new Strickland "Stick" and for a full-camo, metal riser bow I think it looks cool!
I was awed by a Shrew I saw at the KZoo show. I think it was two shows ago now. It was a T/D with black glass and a grip that fit my hand like none had before. It felt like the 'one'.
I didn't buy it... :readit:
todd
tippit,
I hear ya there too. I have one of those now. Wish I built it, but it was built by Kasper Bertsch. It's all Osage with horn nocks, and it shoots!! I has a heartbeat... The heartbeat of the spirit that moves through all things.
todd
I've even had a couple that I said"Awe shoot, wish I wouldn't have picked that one".
I have 2 Black Widow recurves, both with exceptional wood and I shoot them pretty well. Every time I kinda get the itch to add to my 2 bow collestion I think what for? I'm never gonna do ant better then what I have.
Sorry about the pitiful spelling-I'm in a hurry!
Denton 2009 I shot A RIVERS EDGE LX - I took pause and looked around to see if anyone got a glimps of what I just experienced.
Of course, there is my Gila. Selfbows are special to me.

I'm glad to see this topic has stirred so many memories for us. Today my nephew and I were shootin in the yard he says,"what?" "I didn't say anything" I say. another shot or two and again he say "what?" "David I didn't say anything" he tells me "your chuckling everytime time shoot am I doing something wrong?" "Nah buddy your doing everything just fine." He probably thinks dear old uncle is loseing it lol.
Great thread! I posted this in the Alberta section of the forum:
As promised a week early for my B-day! Thanks Bert!!
Handled his bows a couple of years ago at a show decided I had to have one as they felt "just right".

It looks great!
I especially like the elk tips:

Best part is it shoots as good as it looks:

55", 52#, 2pc takedown (comes apart at the handle....pretty slick!)
To say I'm excited about the upcoming archery season would be a huge understatement...
Every time I pick up my widow, I can't believe bows keep getting so much better all the time. We are so lucky we have such great bowyers. USA forever.
I agree with the "awe"some grandeur of God's creation and the gifted bowyers He has scattered about our world.
Here are a couple of pictures of a Cocobolo/Myrtle beauty from Mr. Johnson at Blacktail.

I have instructed my wife to burrie me with my NORTHERN MIST.
Bears many years ago...Paul Schafers today.
I would have to agree with Bill Carlsen re the DAS. I recently received a new set of Border Hex 5 H limbs for my Gen II DAS as well, and the bow has moved into the top spot for me. It is an incredible shooter!
I haven't read through all of these posts, but one bowyer that stands out among others and who's bows are awe inspiring is none other than.....Dean Torges. His bamboo-backed osage bows are truly stunning works of art and very efficient arrow launchers. They seem to be very hard to find anywhere and this fact is reflected in the price they demand. It's rare to find even a used one for less than six or seven hundred bucks. Oh yeah, and I hear that he doesn't even sell them!
Most self bows have me in awe. I want to make one....when thie kids are just a tad older
I'm stuck on the FRED bows,Bighorn T/Ds and Bear Commerative (Super Kodiak w/FF string. Is it a S.K. or WHAT is it?)Shoots great.(Bighorn origional curved beds bought back when Fred and I were 25 years younger and PAPA Bear was still alive in Gainsville FLA.
I traded for a BW MAIII made in 1997 best shooting bow i have day in day out. Good luck hunting this year.
