Hi ya'll,
I have been away for awhile, had some "storms of life" over the past year, but things are letting up, and I have a little free time now. Have been shooting my recurves more in the past couple of months, as I am more of an Archery in the winter, rifle in the summer shooter.
Anyway, been shooting a Grizzly 60@28 that I bought here, and enjoying it. Something this year has been pushing me to try a longbow.
I bought from Jack Shanks off of these classys (excellent seller BTW, will buy from him again if the opportunity presents)and went with a MONTANA longbow.
Got it last night, and within 12 arrows had my nocking point set, and all was good.
Man what a difference!!
I can actually hold this bow for a couple of seconds before release--shoots so much easier!!!
Doesn't seem to have the same shot cycle--and puts the arrows where I look.
It is much easier to shoot in an instinctive type way.
Good thing is, it seems to shoot the same arrows as the Grizzly well.
I will have to get used to the extra length, but it definitely is more "fun " to shoot.
I can tell that I am gonna have to try and build one of these in the future!!
God bless,
Farmer
Farmer, You are hooked! I got that very same feeling 20yrs. ago, like finding the grail or something. Enjoy!!
I, totwotoo, have a real love of the longbow. I do have a Browning recurve, but, it doesn't hold a candle to the longbows IMO.
It happened to that same way, too. I had a recurve, but after being away from archery for a number of years, I had an urge to get back into it. I selected the longbow and have been shooting them regualrly since 1990. It is an addiction.
I always warn any and all folks that I run into that are shooting recurves not to pick up a longbow and shoot it unless they were prepared to make a switch...lol
Just ask someone like Butch, for true, the man got spoiled about as fast as any I've ever witnessed..lol
Preach on brother... preach on!
Can I get an "amen"?..lol
God bless,Mudd
I have never been one to listen to the experts....sometimes that is good, but more often it just means I will spend more money trying to do it the hard way.
And I am sure that the preferenceof longbow is not true for everyone....
I have enough bows.....think I may end up selling some and investing in some bowmaking tools. Will probably start off with a finish yourself kit and work down, but this Montana is so much smoother. And it is a bow that is considered middle of the road. I cannot imagine what a true custom may be like....maybe no better, maybe tons better.
I know that I can draw back and hold if I like, but aiming as I am accustomed to it...seems to produce less accuracy than if I just
--get positioned
--look where I want to shoot
--draw to anchor and release as soon as middle finger touches corner of the mouth.
This is producing accuracy that is equivalent to what I have been getting with the recurve that I have been steady practicing with for about a month and a half.
And lemmie tell ya, it sure beats trying to hold that Grizzly at 60 back for 2-3 seconds.
Farmer
P.S. Thanks, and God bless you, too!!
He is good to us!!
For me, the longbow works much better than anything I have shot; please don't get me wrong, recurves in the right hands are deadly; this is not a longbow versus recurve thread but I am one that believes the longbow is the only bow for me;
Welcome to the family! :D :wavey:
Farmer,
Mudd ain't jokin'. I still shoot a recurve but, it is built like a longbow. I have a Montana & know exactly what you're talking about. Smooth as silk, quiet as a mouse fart & hits right where you're looking. Might not be the fastest around but, it's sure enough to do the job with plenty left over.
Love my recurves, but find a longbow in my hand most of the time.
