Title: Wood Arrow Recommendation
Post by: VA Robinhood on August 18, 2010, 12:02:00 PM
I am wanting to try shooting wood arrows out of my BW PLX 45@28 and was wondering which spine you would recommend for this setup.  my current carbon arrows are GT 1535 cut to 30" with 175 grains up front.

If your draw length is 28 inches and you want to continue with the same length shaft and weight up front, 60-65# should work well.

Orion, My draw is 28 inches and would like to shot 125 grains up front on an overall length arrow of 30 inches.

With 125 gr., 45-50 spine. Leave them a little long at first. One nice thing about wood is they're easy to cut back and re-taper.

That said, I don't know why you'd want to switch from carbon. They're fun to make, but it can't possibly help your shooting. Cedar is heavier (slower) less straight, less consistent in spine and weight, and much more fragile. Now, they're not even cheaper!

Robinhood, your PLX should be cut to center.  For a 29" arrow and 125 gr head BW recommends bow wt x 1.4, which is 63 lb spine; very close to what I figured up.  If you want a 30" BOP arrow, add another 5 lb.  And don't fret, good wood arrows can be very straight, consistent and quite durable.  Feel free to call.

45#+5 for center cut=50#+5 for ff=55#+5 for over 145gr head=60#+5 for each inch of arrow over 28=70#, if you go with a head of 125gr then 65# so I would recommend a 65/70 spine. I know it sounds stiff but my math works, I have used this formula for years and years and trust me it works, it was taught to me over 45 years ago. I would also bet that 70/75# would work.

VA, Looks like you'll have to try a test kit. You can overspine most center shot bows by quite a bit so all of these shaft recommendations will likely work, though one will probably work just a tad better than the others.  I still like 60-65, particularly if you plan to use 125 grain heads.  Good luck.

Thanks for all the recommendations!!!! Now that I have a starting point (range), it is time to get to work finding the prefect arrow.

Good luck to everyone the upcoming season.

Sitka spruce has been what I have went to.They are a lot more durable than cedar, and you will find that they won't break as easy as cedar.
I shoot a #45 whip@28 and I cut them at 29.5",I use 125 field points. My finished arrow is around 465gn.for target shooting,my hunting shafts will be around 530gn.Hilderbrant(sp) out of Wa.st will set you up just call with your specs.
