Title: Skipmaster's Scouting pics
Post by: Skipmaster1 on August 18, 2010, 12:01:00 AM
This year I am going to try and keep a better record of the deer in my hunting area and try to capture them on film by using trail cams, my SLR and my video camera.

Here is one where I have permission to hunt. Seen him 3 nights in a row and got a few pics of him tonight.

I have seen this deer around for a few years and also finally got some pics of her......does anyone know what kind of deer it is? Axis?

And NO it's NOT a fawn. She is at least as big as the big does in the area. I wish she was with some other deer tonight so I could get them in the pic as well

Certainly looks like an Axis doe or Chital as we call them here in Australia

I think the best record you could keep of the buck is on the wall!!!! Great pics and that doe would be a pretty could trophy as well.

I'm about 98% sure that is a spotted fallow deer.Axis have spots running up the neck.Really cool.I would have to be after that one.

There must be a game farm that has them?

You should kill old spot and get her out of the Herd, plus she would eat good!!!

Man, Greg thats a nice buck and a cool doe.Definately either an axis or fallow.Ive never heard of them hybridizing with whitetail but if they do I dont think their fawns can reproduce.Maybe she bounced out of the Bronx Zoo! Im not sure how close you are to Purchase but my wife used to live there and I know there were some exotic deer running around from some estate petting zoo.

There are a few people who had bought a few different exotic deer around here and thought they would stay in the pastures with the horses....but deer are not horses and they just left. I have not seen fawns with this doe over the last 4 years I have seen her. I originally thought it could be a fallow, but I think they are generally smaller. This deer is over 120#'s for sure.

Yeah I have seen a few bucks this season that a bit smaller than him, but not by much. So far he is the best one I have seen on any of the places I can hunt. I know there are some even bigger, so I'm hoping my trail cam will catch them. I'd love to get a crack at one, but just getting pics is a cool.

Check with your DNR, as exotics (at least here in Texas) do not require a tag and can be hunted any time of the year.  IMHO, that is an Axis doe.

Very nice buck, too.

Best of luck with all of them.

The DEC has said that this exotic does not fall under their regulations

im pretty sure its a spotted fallow doe.  axis deer have very pronounced glands by thier eyes and i dont see that.

Had the trail cam out for 4 days and got over 70 pics. Nothing really great mostly does, small bucks and a few turkeys. Here are a few of the young 6 and 8pt that I ended up with a pile of pics of. Another year or 2 and they'll be really nice deer. I am gonna move the cam tomorrow and see if i can't find a mature buck.

The 6pt
