I headed out last weekend to scout a new area in my unit. I had picked up a new Eberlstock X2 and wanted to try it out. So I loaded it up with 2 days worth of food, water, bag, tent and all the other fixin's. The pack performed very well and hope to get a little blood on it come September.
I only saw 3 elk, but not surprising since this spot is a little lower elevation than where I usually hunt elk. The 3 elk did happen to be bulls, all hovering around the 300" mark.
I didn't get any pics, just couldn't get the camera out quick enough, and the bulls were on mission to the nearby canyon. I think this will be a great spot later in the season...Come on SEPTEMBER!!!!!!!
Here are a few pics of the weekend, thanks for looking. Almost had a coyote at 10 yds as he loped by but he just made it down wind as I was about to draw.

Great pics buddy! Good luck come september! What part of the state are you in?
Nothing like drawing a glory tag. I hope you shoot a good bull on this tag. I love to hunt some of the low country around here because their is genrally less people to deal with. Alot of the bulls around here will round up their cows and pull the off the tops down into low country to get away for people and other bulls. Kep us posted and good luck.
Thanks Jamie.
I am near Grand Junction, almost all the way west of the state and about center N&S.
Twitch - That is what I am hoping for with this spot, a little less pressure and hopfully it is where the elk go when they do get pressure on top. Thanks for the wishes!
The baby dragon is awesome.
Nice Little Horny Toad, and Beautiful Pictures,Good Luck on your Hunt,
Kurt
Good luck Jake! A nice bull sticker would go well with your buck!!
thanks for pics! and good luck, september is right around the corner.
I drew a good tag in much different country then I usually hunt too, and am excited as all get out. On the other hand kinda anxious about not hunting the same place where the magic happens every year in the old growth timbered forest!
Either way good luck, and hope to see more of these photos as the year progresses!
shoot straight.
Looks like a great hike and nice photos.
It's starting to feel like hunting season around here.
Cool mornings/ warm afternoons.
Been down around 46 degrees a couple of mornings.
Getting excited.
Good luck.
Looks like fun!
Beautiful pictures
It is coming - too slow for my tastes, but it is coming.....
The anticipation is tough on a guy though. 25 more days before I leave.
Beautiful country. Good luck in September!
thanks for taking the time to share the pics we need more of these.
The micro horny toad is way cool. Looks like lots of that Colorado oakbrush in the area. Makes for good cover for both hunter and hunted. Good luck in September.
Gorgeous country--I'm jealous I can't get out there this year. :banghead:
Jacob great picks, Have you seen any elk rubing yet? took this last week on a short hike, still in velvet.

Sorry for the blur, took some picks just before and forgot to reset the camera.
Thanks all for the comments.
Ryan, you can bet I will be giving you a call if I down a bull!
I cannot agree more with the comments regarding a new area, anxious, excited, worried, all kinds of thoughts about uncharted territory. Although that is what I enjoy about hunting, going new places, seeing new things, and the unknown of what lies over the next rise.
stickhorse - I did not notice any fresh rubs this trip, but I was a little surprised that one of the bulls I saw was already completely rubbed off, (recently it looked)and the other two were full velvet. I imagine they will kick in any moment now.
Cool pictures. I have never seen such a small horny toad.
Great photos, what is the elevation where your hunting? Don't look as high as some spots I have seen for Elk, but still good cover.
Ron
GPS said about 8300. The elk seems to hang out low around here just as much as they do in the high country.
Thanks for sharing the pics. I'll be in northcentral Co in a little over one week. Can't wait!
Good luck... hope to read and see your hunt results here.
Wow, that's higher than I thought. I guess I never think ,even Denver is at 5000 ft.....lol!
Considering it has been 100 plus degrees in N. Texas for the last few weeks those pictures make me envious. Thats right "Whip" we are not just about snow and cold weather. Blame the "Wensels" for your bad weather week in the Lone Star state.
Thanks for sharing the pictures, only 10 more days! I'll be almost in the center of the state, just a little south. I hope the new area works out for you. Good Luck!
8300 - wow - I am seeing elk at half that.
great pics thanks for sharing them....
will have to get out that way someday to hunt..
someday soon i hope...
good luck ,enjoy the journey to the fullest..
Great pics! 3 more weeks of misery in the NY steam pot and I'm gone, baby!! I can smell my clothes doused with cow pee already!! :D

LOL - Randy I sure have, been trying to check out every bull I see that I know the score to and trying to check myself. Hope my adrenaline don't get the better of me...hehehe
Thanks for the kind words everyone!
Best of luck to everyone!!!
