Post by: magnus on August 14, 2010, 02:11:00 PM
Is it best to crest before or after sealing shaft? Thanks in advance.
Magnus.

You need to put a preliminary sealer on the shaft to avoid bleeding depending on the type of crest paint you use. You also need to be sure your paint is compatable with the sealer.   Jim

I stain first. My paint and clear are compatable. Never crested much as Mudd can attest to. Just wondering if one way was better?  Thanks.

I crest after one coat of clear.  I steel wool the shaft and then crest.

Put one coat on then crest, and then however many final coats you want to do after that.Otherwise the paint will follow the grain of the bare wood.

That is a great looking cresting job, You wouldn't be interested in doing a build-along, I would love to do that quailty of work.

When I crest my wood arrows I stain them, then seal with a coat of water-base polly before cresting. two more coats afterwards, then fletch with duco...........James

I use water based floor poly at a 3-1 ratio and do 2 coats of poly crest and then two more coats.

James and Ipcjon2 and others that use water based poly, how are you guys applying the water based poly?  brush? sponge? dip tube?

When you refer to a 3-1 ratio are you talking about a 3-Poly/1-water ratio?

Thanks, hope I'm not hijacking but just expanding on the ? asked by the post.

Thanks, Trap

No worries Trap! The more we learn the better we all get.

I use the 3 poly/1 water and use a home made pvc dip tube. The key is to let it dry good-12-24hr before you apply another coat. And dont over fill the tube it will just poor out when the shaft is dipped in.

how about target burn with that floor poly?

I dont scuff coat my cresting and if I do I'll dip only that portion in wb poly due to the target burn.  I have in the passed coated with wb then finished with my regular sealer which would burn if applied directly to the cresting.   Since switching to the dalys profin I dont scuff coat either due to the yellowing on my white cresting.
