Title: 4 fletch ?
Post by: Peachey on August 12, 2010, 10:53:00 AM
I am thinking of trying 4 5" fletch. For those of you that use 4, do you do them at 90 degrees or 75 by 105 degrees.

I did a few the other day. I just set my bitz. to 90 degrees - I like the look of them. I used 5" shield feathers full left helical.

Can't tell they fly any different from the 3 fletch with field points, but I haven't tried them at long range yet (40+ yards, say)

75 X 105.  I like the look and they clear my shelf nicely.

4 four inch fletch have 1 square inch more surface area than 3 five inch fletch have. The 4 inch fletch provide a bit more control. I can cut two fletch out of one full length feather.  It takes two full length feathers to fletch an arrow with 4 inch and 4 full lengths with the 5 inch fletch.

Both work great.  Post some pics when your done with your arrows.

75x105 is what I have shot and they fly great. I have shot 4" and 5" with good results.

Peachey, I knew you were jealous of my arrows!

Seriously, I've been pretty happy with 4 X 5" and have had good flight from 75X105.  I also get good flight from 60X120.  I am moving to 4 X 4.25" with height just under 3/4" and the flight is good with good visibility, using the 60X120 arrangement.  I have not tried 4X90 so can't compare.

Take all of this with a grain of salt, however, because you have seen me shoot.

I just switched from 3-5" feathers to 4-4" feathers set at 90 degrees and they fly great. Also you dont have to worry about cock feather orientation, just put them on the string and shoot.

So with the 75 X 105 which angle is the nock aligned with? Put it this way, if the arrow is on the string which is up, 75 or 105. Thanks in advace guys, Steve.

The 105 gap would be against the riser.  The 75 gaps would be up/down.  An indexed arrow nock would have the index bump in the middle of the outside 105.  Does that make sense?

Yes Duane, thanks. I'll try a couple and see how it goes.

I use 4 at 90. I shoot 4" in summer on 3d range and sometimes use 4 5" for hunting. I like to be able to see the arrow. My eyes are not too good and the 5" help a lot, especially in low light.
