Title: Pig Trifecta!
Post by: on August 11, 2010, 11:00:00 PM
Well I finally gat to go to the lease for a couple days and get in a few pig hunts. The first day I arrived at about noon. I had had a feeder stolen earlier this year so I hopped on the Ranger and made the rounds. All the feeders were there and working. I also pulled the camera card from the stand we know as "The Pig Stand". When I looked at the pics I was not disappointed. There had been pigs there for the last three days - both morning and evening. So I hung out at camp for a while then got ready for the hunt. I sat in that pit blind all afternoon until dark and did not see a single pig. I did see a couple deer though and that is always a good thing.

Day 2 in the morning I decided to go back to the same blind and give it one more try. The feeder went off at 6:20am and nothing happened. I was just about to catch a little bit of "attitude" wondering how those pigs could have known I was there when I caught movement in the right window. Out walks a small pig, then another, then another, until about 8-10 were scurrying around under the feeder scarfing up my corn. Any one who knows me well knows I am not a "trophy" pig hunter. I like the little ones because they eat the best. So I picked out a little boar at about 10 yards and let the arrow loose from my trusty longbow. The GK Silver Flame tipped arrow slid right through the pig and they all scattered.

As luck would have it, the others had not a clue what had just happened and came right back in for some more corn. I picked out another little boar and let another arrow loose at him. This time they had had enough and tore out of there.

I waited about 20 minutes and got out of the blind to start tracking. The first pig made it about 25yds and was down for the count. The second made it about 50 yards with the same end result. After finding the last one I looked at my watch. WOW! 7:00am and I already have two pigs recovered. This was a fun morning.

Here is a pic of the two little boars. One 49# and the other was 47#. :

That afternoon I decided to go to a different blind. Nothing really exciting happened but I did get one more little pig. The feeder was set to go off at 8:00pm and I got in the stand at about 7:00pm. It was HOT!!!!! About 7:35pm a small pig walked in and started eating my hand thrown corn. I waited for a while to see if any others would join in but the did not so I decided to shoot the one in front of me. I hit this one just a tad high and am really lucky I found it. I lost the blood trail after about 10 yards and started just looking down every possible trail. Luckily, the pig did not make into the thick brush and I did recover it.

Here is a pic of the little 42# sow:

All-in-all, it was a great, fun day of hunting. I can't wait to get out there and try it again.

See y'all later,

Bisch

P.S. - All three pigs were shot with my trusty Bob Sarrels Blueridge longbow. 50#@29.5"

That pic with you and the two boars is great!

I know it's more about the hunt than the kill, but it sure is fun thinning out the hog population.

Man oh man, I'm gonna have to start looking up. All the pigs I've ever seen were on the ground, but I never thought to look in the trees! Good shooting!

Great. Looks like a lot of fun. Have been thinking about trying for some hogs. I took a couple about 35 years ago. A bout time to try again.
