I'm thinking about trying a feather rest and would like to hear some opinions on the pros and cons of them. I'm fairly new to trad shooting and I'm shooting an old Ben Pearson recurve. I'm shooting off the shelf with a bear hair rest right now.
I think they give good fletch clearance and clean arrow flight.Thier easy on fletchings as well.Excellant choice for an old bow with out a radiused arrow shelf for sure.
Perfect bow for it. As Steelhead noted, they give a radius to a flat shelf. I bought a Red Wing Hunter a while back with a feather rest and thought I would take it off but I tried shooting it first and it really shoots nice. Have gotten a couple since. There are a few guys in the Trad Gang that make them.

There is a member her goes by 'trap' he makes a really good one.
A feather rest would go great on your bow. I use the one's made by Trap and there top notch.
Do they cause you to shoot higher than you did before you put one on your shelf?
What happens to them when you hunt in the rain? Do they mat down?
ishootforthrills,
Last week I tried a loaner Silvertip that had an arrow rest on it (a bit higher than a feather rest would be). I had been shooting off carpet rests. I definitely shot higher! After 9 months of practicing off the shelf my eye and bowarm had apparently adjusted to that shelf sight picture (whether one is conscious of it or not). When the arrow was elevated by the rest my "memory" was lost (so was one of my arrows). That said, I really liked shooting of the arrow rest (a bear weather hid behind moleskin). I sense the arrow has less contact with the bow and the set-up may be more forgiving. AFTER the deer season this year I will begin experimenting with arrow rests in earnest before my new Tip arrives in April.
Of course you know you'll have to adjust your nocking point also.
Feather rests are great especially for flat shelf bows like my vintage Howatt's. I treat them with silicone and weather is not a problem.
Thanks guys, I think I'll give one a try.
TRAP
That pretty much covers it.
Does Trap have a website or add? I didn't see one in the sponsors classified section.
Thanks
They don't mat down in the rain. They are very stiff, not like fetching. I did not shoot higher. If you put it on your bow, you'll have to adjust the nock to match the shelf height which will be about a 1/2 inch higher now. If the nock matches the top of the rest, you'll be good. Of course, you might get a little different performance from the arrow so you'll have to work that out.
And yes, the one on my Wing was from Trap. They are nice looking too. Try one

TRAP (member# 12775) hasn't updated his ad in the sponsor's classified section in a while and they are deleted after a month. Just shoot him a PM.
TRAP'S FEATHER RESTS
Raise your nock point a smidge when you go to a feather rest and you won't shoot high at all.
Well , I just ordered a couple of Trap's feather rests. My question is how do you guys mount them? How far away from the strike plate should I mount it? Any pics of them mounted on your bows? Thanks.
They come with an adhesive backing you just peel off and stick it on a clean surface. I put mine almost right up against the strike plate, maybe a feather width space in between there.

How many more you wanna' see? I got tons.
:wavey:
Thanks for the photos. You must really like feather rests.
LOL You can see he does. Try to mount the tail of the rest about even with the throat of the grip (the deepest cut of the grip) They are generally not evenly rounded, a little higher in the front than the back or tail. The highest point of the rest should be about middle of the shelf. Study what Rainemam did and you'll get it right. You can always move it up or back because of the self stick.

Only TRAP's.
Remember the line from Tom Cruise in "Risky Business"..."Porsche...there is no substitute"?
Should have been TRAP's line not Porsche's.
Yeah, I dig feather rests.
Thanks for the kudos guys. Was kinda wondering what prompted all the pms and feather rest orders.
Looks like I better get a few more headed your way Jim. You might be running a little low. Great pics and thanks for taking the time to post them.

Trap just received another PM.
Kurt, that is a very early White Wing with "outlaw" laminations. It now resides in Tucson, Arizona with a very nice gentleman who has an incredible collection of Wing bows. It is insanely beautiful, perhaps one of the most unique Wings I have ever had the pleasure of collecting. I'll try and email you some pics, (don't let me forget).
