It was my first.....great time and had a chance to meet a bunch folks and see some others. Shot with a fellas from Delaware, Mass., New York, New Jersey and Conn. All great guys and fun to talk with and shoot with. I even beat a couple...lol. VERY, VERY challenging, but at the end I was starting to come around and get the feel for the difficult shots. Again great event and thanks to all that made it possible.....ron w

I will say I was kinda off with my shooting, but worked on it all weekend, and I think I did ok.
Like Curt said, I NEED a shower, and some sleep. I forgot my camera, so no pics from me, but I know I saw a lot of pictures being taken.
On another note, thanks to those responsible for making this event happen. Michelle does a great job keeping us all in line, and it always seems to run smoothly.
Fred did awesome, and I think he has a better grasp on what makes the muzzy so fun. It was great to meet ya man.
Lastly, Tyler, awesome job buddy. I cant wait to see how you do next year. Just remember..."no no" and you will win every time. :laughing:

Another great year at the Muzzy. Thank you to the crew who puts this together every year for us.The weather was perfect. The food was amazing.Hanging out with all you fellow bowhunters. Catching up with people you haven't seen in a year. The young one's moving up through the rake's. Heart warming to say the least. It's nice to see the lady's divison growing. Just a great weekend over all. It was very cool to see Jeff's boy Tyler move up through the A divison to make it to the final eight.This being his first time shooting with the big boys. Mike, Thank you for giving me a place to stay and all the cold cuts I could eat.Alot of laughs all weekend long..I'll never forget shooting the blue course sunday afternoon. Out of control. The guys that stayed at Mike"s (even the guy who just come's to fish)are a good bunch of people. It was nice to meet Fred.E a real good shot and a graet guy..Hope everyone makes it home safe and looking forward to next year...

I wanted so bad to attend, but I had 150 youth on a pioneer Trek re-creation. Wish I could've been there. Some of the finest folks in the country. Glad the weather worked so well for you. Please post pictures so I can live vicariously.
Every year Muzzy is my favorite shoot. Seeing Michele, her Mom, Dolores, Ronnie, Yvonne, Mark Land, the kids and all the other people that make Muzzy "Muzzy!" is just something else. Seeing Fred again just made it that much more special. Great shooting and talking with everyone again. Congrats to all the winners. Once again i got knocked out of A on Sunday but losing to a great guy like Steve makes it ok.
I think I coulda taken the whole thing this year if only I woulda known that I was allergic to the muskox wool from my string silencers, my eyes kept watering and I couldnt see the blocks clearly. It coluld also be that Pete and Matt are to blame for telling me the chicken wire and the Betty Crocker jokes tht had me laughing allllll day long.Something or someone is to blame, thats my story and Im sticking to it. Seriously though, it sure was a whole lotta fun as always.I got my son Noah to come this year and he had fun as well although not as much as me I suspect. Thanks to everyone for treating him like one of the guys.
A great weekend with the best weather you could ask for. Michelle, Yvonne and the other hard working folks made it a shoot not to be missed again.
Great seeing all those people you only get to see once a year. Great weather, great company, great food, great course. Life is good.
one of the great things about the muzzy shoot is that you get to meet/ shoot against a bunch of different guys. this year I shot with guys I've never shot with before, and through the years I've never met a bad guy there...all good people.
and now for a quick little story...the first time out on Sunday morning is always a tough one for me, not quite awake yet, muscles are still tired and a little sore for the day before.. I had to shoot against Brian first thing Sunday, but I had a perfect plan, yep I played him like a fish on a string and the hook was set deep in his jaw...I gave him just enough line at the start to give him a lead...knowing that he'd be over confindent and at just the right time I'd tighten that line and reel him in. We got to the thread the needle shot on big blue, yes, this was the place, this was where I would make an incredible shot and crush his confidence and move onto an easy victory. I sat myself down upon the rock, fully confident, putting pressure on the string, in my mind knowing that the needle had already been threaded and victory was mine. I brought the arrow back to full draw let loose with a smooth and perfect release only to see my arrow careen off every darn tree in the way and fly well clear of the block :scared: Then Brian goes over sets on the rock to take his shot, throws the hook I had so deeply embeded in him clean off and makes that perfect shot :thumbsup:
I just got up from a nap, what a great weekend for the shoot, as always Mike was a perfect host. Thanks Mike for putting up with me and the wood chipper :readit:
One of the brightest highlights of the weekend was all the families that were there...including Michele's husband, Fred, who is as genuine a person as he appears to be on his shows. Incredibley some of the women outshot a lot of the men! My own wife beat me by one point....and we were celebrating out 10th wedding anniversary this weekend, as well! The weather was perfect and the people outstanding. Nothing short of a perfect weekend. I have some pics but need to download them. Will pick a few and add them tomorrow as we just got in this afternoon.
I want to thank everyone there for being such great people and great sports.
By the way, curt beat Fred Eichler in a last shot shootout for 3rd place.
I still can't get over what a great weekend it was.
Sounds like everyone had a great time. I wish I wasnty pinching pennies at the time or I would have made it.

This was my first and I had a great time.I got to see some people I knew and shoot with a few real nice people I just met.Congratulations Cade! I had a great time after Matt(Homer) saved the day by talking me in to staying after the worst round of my life!! It is always a blast but when ya shoot like I did expect so much more I was kicking myself. I stayed and had a blast shooting with Homer(Matt)Peter,Adam,Niomi and Izzy in the Tony, I even managed to win a trophy so that made my day. Two highlights for me was 15 year old Tyler Williams making it to the final 8 in the A division and it took the eventuall overall champion Kieth Barber to eliminate him!! Congrats my friend!! Than young Cade Cabrera winning the youth divsion, he is a fine shot and a finer young man! I actually got tears in my eyes when I saw Curt get his trophy and have Cade come up with him for a picture with Michelle Eichler, it was the first thing I told Cindy when I got home!! You two guys are some of the finest guys I know!! Last but not least, Thankyou Matt, you are the man!! Love Ya!! Shawn

I can't thank them enough for giving me so much joy in my life over the years. My 1st Muzzy was 1986, and over the years I've only missed 1 or 2, and I hated to miss those.They truly make you feel like part of the Muzzy family. It's been like that since day 1 for me.

My it felt so good to be back at "The Muzzy" it truly is the most fun you can have with a bow in your hand. My brother came for the first time and is already making plans for next year with me, my son who finished 3rd in juniors and my
dad. Sure was great seeing old friends and making new ones
When I showed up Saturday, I waited a while to register as the line was long. After a while Cade and I got on line and walked up to the table and Michelle gretted us both very warmly as she always does.
Over the last few years I'd always ask..."did Fred make it?" . Her answer was always, "no"...he's so busy things, just never worked out.
So this year she comes right out and says..."Fred's here!"

I'd only met Fred once at the NY Bowhunters Banquet a few years back when he was there with Michelle. Michelle had always told me that she thought we'd be great shooting against each other.
She'd told him some about me, and she'd always said he was a good shot. How cool would it be to shoot with Fred...but it never seemed like it would happen...hmmmm...
In the opening round seating round of 28, I came close...he was shooting in the pair in front of me. It was a great chance to "get to know him" a little...How cool!
I also got a great chance, since I was always coming up behind him, to see him shoot... he was shooting very well..."He's the real deal"!
Then something happened, that has never happened to me in 25 yrs. of trad shooting, something that I would have never expected.....
I was shooting well,enjoying the company of the shooters around me, and on my way to what might have been my best score in the seating round.
I walked up to the stake at Red #3, pulled back, relaxed my fingers and eveything blew up in front of me!!! :scared:
There was a shockingly loud "pow", and next thing I knew my bow was clanking around in the rocks in front of me....My bowstring had broke!!!
My round ended with 8 targets to go!
Fred offered everything from his extra bowstring(6 inches too long), his bow, and the shirt off his back to help me out so I could finish my round....he's right handed, and he was shooting a 62" bow...but he sure tried to help...like said earlier...he's the "real deal".
I also want to thank Tom Phillips, who was shooting with Fred, for offering me his bow to shoot(the one he was shooting). He's lefty like me. But I didn't want to mess anyone up. Which I probably did anyway. For fun I tried Fred's righty bow, and Tom's bow before they'd even finished their round. Probably my fault they ended up three targets shy of finishing... Thanx fellas... I think it kept me from getting "gun shy" by getting to shoot both of your bows right after what had happened to me. I believe it kept me from thinking about it too much :notworthy:
At the end of the round, Fred said..."how cool would it be for us to be shooting against each other on Sunday afternoon"...in other words...for the recurve champoinship.
For those that have never been there...that's along road to hoe... a lot of arrows, usually some luck, and a whole lotta sweat, focus, and effort are needed to get to that point....anyone that's been there will tell you...not easy! How cool would that be though...
But I still had the bowstring issue to deal with, I had no idea if my bow was even alright at this point...
First of, thank you to everyone from the Muzzy for the effort they put in to have such a terrific stump shoot. It is something that I look forward to every year, and on the way home I already start thinking about the next year.. It was a great time with everyone I shot with- Izzy, Pete, Curt, Shawn, John, and all the crazy pond shooters on Sat night- you know who you are! It made a great ending to Saturday. :archer2: :archer2:

....so after putting a different string on my "Cy", and pulling her back slowly a couple time, then shooting it some at the practice range....she was just fine. That was a huge relief, I hadn't brought "Timex" as a back up! After all, strings never break right? Lesson learned!!!!
Shooting Saturday went ok, but became a real struggle as the day wore on. A long, long week of working out in the heat, humidity, and no shade for hours at a time was really taking it's toll. Add a real lack of sleep...like I said, it was a struggle....
Waiting for me after my last round of the day was a great meal, and even better dessert...what a great way to end the day....I couldn't wait to get to the motel to get some sleep.
Cade had done really well with his "Big Ed" longbow...after day one he was sitting in second place...I was proud of him, he was shooting well!

Well.....here's a few more pics and a bit of narrative to add to the stuff already here. My first round was with Phil and "Smokin Joe". I really don't remember last names (have enough trouble with first names). We were all shooting in the Senior Division and started on the Red Course. When we got to the shot across Lake Nocando I just had to take a couple of pics. Didn't manage to get arrows in flight but "Smokin Joe" was interesing. He is a competitive compound shooter and was at the Muzzy for the first time shooting a borrowed bow and arrows.

For the weekend "Smokin Joe" actually beat me. Normally I am pretty well up in the standings but the next pic shows how my whole weekend went. You will see two arrow in the pic. On almost every target my two arrows were that close to each other but just shy of hitting the block. You can see my arrow sticking in the rubber pad that is on most stumps. We removed the block for the pic but all weekend long was like that for me. If we had been playing horseshoes I would have won. Being that close just doesn't cut it at the Muzzy. :banghead: :laughing:

Fred Eichler being there was a big deal. All of us had asked about him since he and Michele got married. He turned out to be the "real deal".

Here's another side of Fred that I was happy to see was genuine. At the awards ceremony he could probably had taken more of the spotlight but I caught him with two of the boys. It was clear to me that he and Michele have a pretty special relationship. He told us it does go beyond his getting free broadheads in exchange for giving her free hunts. He is obviously a good dad...you just can't fake stuff llke this.

All in all a perfect weekend for Laura and me and it seemed to be that way for everyone that was there. As I said earlier, it was very pleasing to see so many families and little kids with their parents. As always, I made new friends and Laura was able to meet the wives of a few of the shooters (actually a number of them shot and had real fun doing it..and plan to return).
One of the highlights of the event was that John Tulcz of L'il Suckling bows made a yourh bow that was presented to a youth shooter via a drawing. I was so impressed and moved by John's gift that I didn't even think to take a pic. Perhaps someone will post it.
The last photo of Fred and a couple of his boys is what it is all about. The rest is just fluff! As they say, "no success outside of the home can account for failure from within".
Curt be sure to tell my little carp shooting buddy that I said congratulations. Jen and I leave for Florida to bowfish alligators on Friday.

.....so it was apparent in my first round out on Sunday that it was going to be a grind! Everything I was doing right yesterday, wasn't happening today.
But I managed enough good shots to make it thru my first match...but barely!
The next match was worse, I knew what I had to do, but I just could make myself do it.
it's times like this, when you're home practicing, that you just quit for the day and start fresh the next....today I didn't have that option! I was in the "hunt"....
But alas, even though I was starting to fight thru it, Steve Stavaly was just too tough to overcome this year. He was solid as a rock, and in the end, was the better man this day.
Couldn't have lost to better guy, Steve's an awesome guy, and a hardcore hunter :notworthy:
Little did I know, what/who was waiting for me next......none other than Fred Eichler!
We'd shoot it out for 3rd and 4th place....how cool!

.....Fred and I both talked about how "spent" we were from a long weekend of shooting. Those that have experienced going deep into the weekend and still being in the competition will understand. The amount of arrows, the mountain, and the mental concentration are all hard on a shooter.

Keeping in mind of course that I ain't you and you ain't me and we ain't talkin. Rumor has it that there bow you don't see wont begin production in 2 months and definitely wont have ILF competion quality carbon foam limbs on it. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it. :saywhat:
When we got to the edge of the woods and within view of the shoot-off area...we could the battle for 1st and 2nd had also come to a shoot-off, and they were tied at 6 just like we were...we waited...

For shoot-off's it not sudden-death...we toss a coin, winner gets choice of first or second shot, but both shooters get an eqal amount of shots.
I won the toss and elected to shoot first. Even if I hit it, Fred would still get a chance to tie. It would go on like that till someone hit it, and the other didn't....

Although I did have one bad round, and didn't get the chance to shoot in the recurve final for 1st place, there isn't a thing I'd change about how it all turned out....getting the chance to shoot with Fred was something I'll never forget!

I've always heard about the Muzzy shoot. Could you explain a bit more about how exactly it works? Even with all your pictures, I don't think I fully understand. The blocks are the "stumps"? Just hitting them doesn't count? What are the different colors and sizes for?
Fred is a member here on tradgang but I can't seam to remember his ID. It would be cool if someone would send him a link to check it this thread out. I'm sure he would enjoy it.

Yeah..Mike thanks again for a safe, warm, wonderful place to stay.NO THANK YOU!!!! Mr.Green has the greatest pillow..Time around the fire was good..Jeff misplacing the boys arrows behind the sit of the truck..PRICELESS...Just one change. Maybe we could watch more hunting videos then canoeing ones next year..

Hey Tucker, only some of them were small. I just need to shoot more, work on my anchor AGAIN, and work out my grip issue. Watch out next year buddy. LOL.
Covey, it is a great time. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that it will kick your butt though. Hundreds of shots...seems like you are always going uphill....but such a great group of people and some of the toughest shots I have every tried. It is a blast.

Man - this thread made me miss my kids something fierce. Congrats on a great shoot, but most importantly that you could share it with your son, who I noticed is a lefty like his daddy.

Curt I have followed this thread since you started it, I missed being there and seeing everyone. I would have loved to watch Cade shoot the second day, you have done a great job with him. That picture of him shooting across the pond brings back memories.

Good times...I find myself smiling often, thinking back to some of the shenanigans of this and past years.
Is their a website with information about the shoot for next year? It looks like a lot of fun.
No website that I know of - try emailing muzzy directly for info. Jamie, you said it - nothing but Greeeeeeeeat people, fun, good times, and shenanigans. We're about down to 49 weeks and counting!
