I am having trouble this year with finding a short brimed hat. I have used buckets and jones style hats in the past but I am having problems finding a good hat this year. I like bonnies and are easier to find but the brim get in the way on some shoot angles for me. I would be happy with any short brimed hat of quality matieral. Wool or fleece for cold weather and light but breathable matieral for early hunts. Thank you for your help.
"short brimed"
Nocking point has a neat short brimmed hat that is also bendable.
You could buy the hat you like and take it to a sew shop to have the brim shortened to your desired length...or you could buy one from Gray Wolf Woolens and they will tailor the brim for you.
Check out Prairie Traditions on the sponsors, Joe has a good selection of Fedora style hats. I got one from him at Denton Hill, all wool felt and crush able. Not sure if that's what your looking for.Brim is about 2".
3 rivers has a nice soft brimmed hat.
I 2nd Prairie Traditions..bought a short rimed Bailey fedora and just love it. Great in rain and strong overhead sun.
The Wensels are selling 3 patterns of their short brimmed hat with a wire brim you can turn up. Olive drab, brown camo, green camo. Best hat I've owned.
Reddogge,
Are the hats on the Wensel's web site??
I couldn't find them.
Outback has a nice willis hat I use for warm weather with a mesh crown and oilcloth brim that is soft. Orvis has a hat that is water resistant and is a blend of wool and fur that is warm and soft called a Jefferson rain hat with a short brim for cold weather. If either grabs you I can supply item numbers. Ben
Check Cabela's, I have two of their wool hats, one is an outback style, other is a Art YOung style Fedora, quality and good prices.
Here are 3 of the hats that the Wensel's have. They have one more in a dark camo. E-mail them they have some in stock. $10.00 plus $5.00 shipping.

Get any wide brimmed cowboy hat and then trim the brim as short as you want. I normally cut mine to 2 and 1/2 inches.
The perfect hat is a real challenge to find.
I have several hats that I like but as yet I haven't found that "perfect hat" that just exudes "me".
I have seen a few folks wearing hats that are so natural on them they are almost as much a part of them as any other part of their body.
That's what I want for me.
God bless,Mudd
Thanks for the input everyone I have some great options to look at now. Mudd I have to agree it's a tuogh find so far it's been the bucket for me.
Nocking point sells those same wire brim hats.
i have an australian cowboy hat made by a company called barmah.it is made of kangaroo leather.it is very soft and water proof.you can roll it into a ball, but when you let it go it pops back into shape.best of all the brim is soft and doesn't get in the way of the bow string.you should check one out.
just found their web site.www.barmahhats.com.au check them out.the one i have is called squashy kangaroo.great hat.
I wear a Filson tin cloth packer hat. I've had this thing so long it is not pretty to look at, but I love it. I wouldn't trade it for anything else.
I used to rodeo, so I have worn out a good many felt cowboy hats, and unless you get 20X or better it's not going to last too long if you are rough on it. My filson hat is almost 20 years old, has blood stains dirt and crud on it, but is all in one piece still.
A friend of mine bought I nice one at Denton Hill from Big Jim's Bows, wire in the brim as well.
I like the Sitka beanies with the short brim.
Try noggintops.com
I really like My boonie 3-D leafy hat.
rocky makes a nice one. Im not sure if they still have it but I bought a couple when they were on sale.
I 2nd the Filson. I wear one that has flo-orange when hunting small game.
I bought the Cabelas felt hat and carefully trimmed the brim. Since it has an unfinished edge in the first place you can hardly notice the differenc
BTW for the summer I use a straw fedora with a short brim. cooler to wear and keeps sun off your head
Sam
I have one that is really for fishing and is foldable but looks like Byron Ferguson's hat he wears. It is just to hot most the year to wear here in Texas.
I got mine from The Nocking Point when i was in Compton, it is short brimmed and bendable. I really like it. I think it was like $7
Got a camo Stormy Kromer cap, gore-tex and all with ear flaps that you cant beat when the weather turns.
Good Luck,
Nathan
I have a couple from The Nocking Point - nice hat!
Big Jim has great warm weather radar style caps with a short bill (wire in it) to allow you to turn it up or down.
Noggintops.com has a good selection of Papa Bear styled short brim felt & wool hats. Worth a look.

You can also bail water out of a boat with it.

3 desperados, two are wearing their King of the Mountain whool hat.Silent warm and short soft brimmed. They have a elastic band around where you can stick some brush to break your outline, great feature.
Gray wolf woolens has a good line of hats, they are a sponsor here, the products there are top notch. I own several of their products and have had nothing but good luck with them all. Hats (http://www.graywolfwoolens.com/store/home.php?cat=33&sort=orderby&sort_direction=0&page=2)

+1 on that. I've got the Fred Bear model (sadly it failed to make me as successful as Fred) and love it.

That one in your avatar isn't the perfect hat? Come on man - that's the ONE.
:bigsmyl:
I personally buy the hat I like for fit. Brim width is of no concern, all it takes is a divider and sharp pair of scissors and you're in business. I mean after all it's for hunting, the edge can be a little ragged and the animals hardly ever notice. I normally bend mine up in front anyway. (My wife hates my hats though)
Finding a hat is easy. Finding one to fit is tough when you have a size 8 head. That is a 2XL, which most companies don't carry. The brim is another problem still. Prairie Traditions can take care of most of your needs. Give Joe a call, if he doesn't have it, he'll point you in the right direction. I just got one from the Alabama Hat Lady that is perfect. Plenty big and no problem with the short, flexible bill. Can't say enough good things about her hat.
I have a Stetson Three Forks Gun Club Hat from Cabela's it's $129.99, but I've had mine for over 7 years & it's still a great hat. Looking a bit worn now, but still very servicable. It's felt with a 2-1/2" brim, just right for a trad archer. I really like mine & I'd buy another.

Today I looked at some of the short brim hats that the Wensel brothers offer and they're pretty neat little deals. Light, tough, adjustable, and in camo or solid colors. You just pop it on your head and bend the bill however you want for string clearance or "personal style". Good price too. It's called "The Bowhunter's Lid". If you are looking for a heavier short brimmed hat Classic Bowman makes a wool hat called the "Bowhunters Brim". I can post some photos if anyone wants to see either one.
Cool Pick Cacciatore!
One suggestion is to watch a few auction sites for old Stetson and other hats. Old pork pie hats tend to have short brims. Plus, if the price is right, you can trim one down without worrying about ruining an expensive hat.
I've owned more felt Fedoras that I can remember, from hunting retailer cheapies to high-end Stetson and Borsalinos. But for the money, I've never owned a better hat than my Akubras. Ths company has a long history of quality and functionality, made in Australia. Their sweat bands are really unique and fit the head perfectly. The wild hare felt is thick enough to be rugged but thin and "buttery" enough to flex in heavy winds so your hat doesn't fly off. I wear a "Bushman" which has a big brim, BUT you can flip the brim up for string clearance. I can't say enough about those Akubras.
This is great now I have alot of choice's and ideas. One thing I have found important to me is to have a bill I don't have to move or flip up. I always try to have the sun at my back when hunting but the animals never read the script. Most of the time I just rotate my ball cap around but the sun can make some shoots tough. I also like the small brim because I can hide eye movement. Thanks agian Jim.
Gary, Can you post some pics of the Bowhunters Lid
when you get a chance? I wanted to get one at Denton Hill but the guys sold out before I could reserve one. Now I hear they have more colors to pick from. I would like the non-camo for walkking around town and going to bow shoots, but the real advantage is I hunt in very thick cover and if I wear a ball-cap with a regular bill I don't see limbs and sticks as well and offten get poked in the eye as I'm turning my head looking for shed antlers or what-ever. Mike
I'm with Bill on the size thing, Hats I can find, one that fits is another thing. That's why I bought the one from Prairie Traditions....it fit!!!
Does anybody have any pics of the hats that are found at The Nocking Point? Not only could I not find them on the website, but there are no pictures of any of the products.
Here ya go Mike.

Sort of looks like a wanted poster doesn't it? I wonder what would happen if we posted a few copies at rest stops along the interstate highways?? I'm willing to do my share:^)
I had posted the hats that the Wensel Brothers sell, but they deleted it. I guess because I said how much they cost. Go figure
Lets see how long that ad stays on here
I bought a Mossy Oak boonie style hat about seven years ago, it finally decomposed and had to be buried behind the seat of my truck this year.
I went to a military surplus dealer and bought one of the " digi-cam " boonies,
I like em because the brim of the hat will bend back if the string pushes against it. I've gotten used to shooting with it... I really like mine.
Ooops. That was just a screen capture from their website. No pix available that just show the hats. Oh well.
I like the military issue boony hats, both old style and new. The older ones have a shorter brim, but the new Marpat design is pretty cool also. Neither should have a problem with being able to pull string into brim and bending alittle. This is how I shoot with one, or I just sit it back on my head a little further.

Did you mean hats or caps? I took it you were looking for a short brimmed hat.
I was looking for both.
The "Lid" is the hat Big Jim had at the AL shoots last year. I bought one for me, my son, and a buddy. We love 'em.
In cold weather you just pull a fleece or wool toboggan over it and you are good to go...at least where 20 F is cold!
great hats online at:

Another vote for the filsons. I wear the original style for 16 years kept me dry and shaded.
Craig,
It might have been the size of your photo that got it deleted. I think we have to shrink them down to 640 pixels wide.
