Title: sharpening woodsman elites
Post by: stickbowhafe on August 01, 2010, 08:15:00 PM
I've got some 150 grain woodsman elites that I plan on using this fall. However, I can't get them shaving sharp as much as I like. I went by the 3 rivers video clip that shows using a file than the jewelstik. They are nice and sharp, just not shaving. Any tips on how to get these suckers scary wicked sharp?  Thanks.

Dude, I beat my brains out trying to sharpen WW.  I am just going to stick with good old fashioned Magnus Stingers.  They are nice and sharp right out of the package, fly great and easy to resharpen.  Don't get me wrong, WW are maybe the best whitetail broadhead ever but I'm not a shop rat and I just can't get em shaving sharp.  Good Luck

I have used the same method as you mention on the original woodsmans. After the jewelstik I like to drag them backwards on the rough side of a cereal box. This seems to give them that razor edge that I'm looking for. Good luck.

step 1  sharpie to all the edges

step 2  work 2 edges on a 14" flat file until all sharpie marks are gone

step 3 5 light passes on the file on each side
  (usuallwill shave at this point)

step 4 5 then 4 then 3 then 2, then 1 pass w/jewel stick

step 5  repeat step 3 with a fine(8000 grit waterstone)

step 6   strop on leather or cardboard dusted with polishing compound

takes about 10-15 min per head
shaves easily

I do very close to texbows method.
I get the sharpie marks off then start the count down starting at 10 strokes per side. Then I go around, 1 stroke per side for 30 strokes. Very light strokes.
For me if I go anything past the file it starts to dull back down so I stop with the file. The blades are plowing hair at that point so I see no need to go any further.

Tip... bring the edge to a wire edge on the file then move to the hone(s).This is where most guys mess it up.

Only very light pressure past this point... almost no pressure. Usually just a pass or two after the wire edge is removed is as sharp as you need it. (should shave easilly)

Over doing the honing with anything other than the lightest strokes will round the edge and it'll never be as sharp as you want it.

Watched Charlie' sharpening how-to on the tradgang DVD yesterday. Very simple to follow, even for the challenged like me.

Just reporting in....all advice helped and my woodsmans are ready to rock. I just needed to give it some more time and they came right around. Thanks again.

I sharpen mine exactly like he does cept for the last step which I change to a leather strop & strop mine for 12 passes per side alternating for the sharpness that I want & that mine are attached to the arrow during the whole process.

I don't really use a file to sharpen anything, unless it has no edge at all and I need to make one from scratch. I use DMT diamond plates - with water.

I have a toolbox full of every kind of sharpening stone imaginable, but I only use 4 tools, really and they will get anything sharp.

8" X 3" diasharp Coarse
8" X 2" duosharp fine x extra fine
Strop
Loupe Magnifier

DMT also makes an extra coarse plate, which would be good for completely re-profiling edges, or making bevels where there are none, but I don't have one and haven't really needed it.

marjsl...good advise about using an eye loupe, why guess about a flat spot when you can actualy see it?
