Title: Anyone watch Dual Survival on Discovery? Great show.
Post by: highpoint forge on August 01, 2010, 06:18:00 PM
How about this week's episode "Soaked" where Dave salvages a takedown longbow dry-case from the pre arranged canoe spill in the Olympic Rain Forest river, and to use the bow he makes an arrow shaft out of a fire hardened Salmonwood sapling, a broadhead he knapps from a found beer bottle bottom, and a dropped elk tine. There was  duct tape on the bow tube he used for helical fletchings, upon which Dave sets out to get some food.

Sure enough as he looks for the Elk he saw earlier, he hears a wild turkey hen, settles in against a mossy fallen log and calls it in with his mouth. He nails it with the self-arrow and modern bow for turkey supper. Even his form loked pretty good. I did not see the arrow flight.

That was impressive.

I caught the episode yesterday. You can watch full length episodes on YouTube without commercials. I enjoy this show a lot! Nice shot on that turkey too!

Methinks Dave can shoot said bow. Was it a Morrison?

It's a great show, Dave is a real Woodsman. He runs the Pathfinder School in Ohio. I was following him before he got the show. It's not supposed to be real, just a simulated bad situation. I like the way all the survival factors are considered, and prioritized depending on the environment. There is a thread on this page about it. The bow was a Hornes "Flint Quest". Here is a link to full episodes on YouTube:    http://www.youtube.com/user/DualSurvival

I have a subscription to the show using my AppleTV. Even Cody is pretty dang good to watch as a counterpoint to Dave's style.

Survival stuff-A. Turkey shot-D-. Great looking bow, liked watching him work the sapling into an arrow, knapping the head, making the nock and attaching the point. Good form with the bow.

Post by: highpoint forge on August 01, 2010, 06:53:00 PM
The point wasn't archery but he did make the kill, with the aid of a self arrow and the bow he had. Still a feat if you ask me.

A lot, hell MOST, of the guys here with dedicated setups have not replicated this. So my hat is off to Mr. Canterbury, even if he jumped on that hen and cut it's head off.

Yes Dave knows Trad Archery. He also runs "Wilderness Outfitters Archery", and has some good videos on YouTube giving a very good intro to Trad Archery. I'd like to know Dave's real thoughts on Cody. If you watch close you can see the muscles in his jaw spasing once in a while as he holds his opinion back. The guy was still running around barefoot in 10 degree weather in the shipwrecked episode.

I DVRed it the other night, and my boys and I watched it last night.  It was a good episode.  I'm not to sure about theguy that was on there with no shoes though.

Cody has his way, Dave has his too. They both work. Gotta give it to a barefoot guy in shorts in that weather. He's plenty tough.

I guess you're right. The point of teaming them-up is to show opposing approaches to the same problems. Personnally, I'll take Dave's style anytime, I like shoes/boots. Cody did seem to be a little nervous in the swamp when Dave cought a small water moccosin and pointed out that with all the low vegetation he couldn't see snakes well.

highpoint, I have not duplicated the feat of shooting a turkey that seems to be tethered by its leg. I'll bet I could do it with my selfbow or my modern bow though  :bigsmyl:  The survival information was useful, the turkey shot was too staged for me to enjoy. I think they would have been eating "roadkill" fish and no turkey in that episode without cinematic license.

Cody is perhaps the best practitioner of bushcraft skills around.  He has a great book called 98.6.  One of the best survival books around.

It's a fun show and entertaining.  This episode happened to feature some trad / primitive archery knowhow so that was cool.  I admit I don't get every episode's crazy over-emphasis on food (shelter / fire / water are all much more important) but whatever - the show is for FUN and it seems to meet that goal.

OK, I'll plant my seat right on the fence and observe that in a "real" survival fix I hope I remember to be both Dave AND Cody. Use Dave's hard-charging, high energy style when needed, and also use Cody's "move through the woods like an animal" pace too. Having both styles presented makes sense to me, since one style is not right and the other wrong. Good show, and of course it is staged. My guess is that 100% of "reality" shows on TV are staged and edited. I think the thing that impressed me as much as anything on that episode was watching Dave knap that cool looking point from an old Bud Light bottle! Also, that Horne bow looked awesome when Dave used it on that turkey. Dave's contribution to dinner that night was more dramatic, but that "road-kill" salmon Cody picked up in the river looked tasty cooking over that fire. Those boys sure ate good that adventure.

It's not a "Reality Show". It's not intended to fool people that it's real. They state right out that the scenarios are set-up to give a representation of what survival responses would be under similiar circumstances, with two guys approaching it in their own style. That's why they spend so much time explaining the conditions and why they choose their priorities and methods. It's not a hunting show, so there is no need to go into every little detail and present "actual" hunting scenes. The object is to teach survival skills and a survival mentality in an entertaining way. Both those guys teach survival. Dave has his own YouTube channel and heads the Pathfinder School, and Wilderness Outfitter's Archery.
Gerry, I'll have to check out Cody's book, thanks for the head's up. I didn't care for him at first, and still don't get the barefoot thing, but I'm developing an appreciation for his style. Even Dave was impressed with the shelter he made on the Shipwrecked scene. Still though, if I had to choose between eating Grubs with Cody, or Roast Turkey or Pig with Dave, I've gotta go with Dave.

I enjoy watching it. Both Cody and Dave teach this stuff and if they can get a bonus having an entertaining tv program then good for them.  It's a fun show to watch and adding in traditional archery was a treat.

Been watching since it got on youtube! A bit to "stressfull music/shaky camera" at times, but gotta hand it to Dave and Cody, they know their stuff!

Also been watching Dave and Crittr with the wildernessoutfitters on youtube, lots of good tricks and tips there!

I'd never heard of Cody before DS, but will follow his work from now!

Well my self I love the show. I also like les stroud and the new man woman wild.  Those are about the only show on t.v that I find interesting.  I think Dave and Cody are very skilled at what they do and I'm not going to take any credit from them just because they are on TV.  Its not a reality show at all. Very good info for any woodsman. Take it how you want but ill be tuning any week to week. Sure beats MTV.

Its a really great show i never miss an episode. it says right before the show starts that some situations are staged to help educate the viewers and there is help available to help them out of any life threatening situations. They have to have rules to go by just like we do at our jobs that are OSHA and DER regulated for safety. I also like Man Woman Wild.

Cody had this to say in a newspaper interview with John Stanley - Jun. 10, 2010 in The Arizona Republic:

Although scenarios were based "on real crappy things that happen to real people," Lundin is aware that most viewers just want to be entertained. And that's perfectly OK.
"I think a good educator is an entertainer," he said. "If people aren't being entertained, they're not learning. That's what I try to do with my books and survival courses. People see this hippie with no shoes and it gets them engaged."
And although he hopes some viewers may pick up a few tidbits of survival knowledge, he said the show isn't meant to be an instructional video.
"It's (expletive) TV," he said. "It's entertainment. If you want to learn survival skills, you need to get your butt up off the couch and get outside and train with someone knowledgeable."

Yep, I can sure hear the bush hippie saying that, he tells it like he sees it.

"Dual Survivor" is to me both entertaining and educational. And as an added bonus, watching it is just one more thing I can do with my 20 year old son who usually is focused on girls and gasoline. Last weekend at Cabelas I think we found that cool knife Dave uses, and my son was dropping some big time hints that his current blade was pretty wimpy compared to the survival Gerber. He even quoted Crocodile Dundee saying "Now THAT's a knife!"

I started out disliking Cody but now I really like him.

Based on reading their interaction they both see the others faults, but have deep respect for each other.

Great show with two guys I hope I am able to learn from in person one day with my boys...

The shows are very educational. I just wish they wouldn't play us like idiots. I know they need ratings and all.
That last show in the Northwest Territory was just way to staged for me. They just so happen to find a bottle and a perfect shaped antler point to knap an arrow head. All the while carrying a bow with no arrows...hmm Then throw in a turkey tied to a stake to shoot.

A lot of the people that watch the show probably ARE "Idiots", as far as outdoor skills and knowledge are concerned. Not everyone spends as much time as most of us do outdoors. The show just may get some of them interested in learning about these things and get them off their couches. The bottle and the knapping I believe were just to leave the impression that someone that may find themselves in a bad spot needs to constantly be looking for items that can be used. In that case one man's garbage was another's arrowhead. It could also have become a knife edge if needed. I know it's got me looking to get a book on knapping to find out what tools I need and how to get started in it. I planned to do it some day anyway, this just kick-started me. I saw something interesting on the "Man Woman Wild" also. The guy brought swamp water to enough of a boil to purify it in a typical plastic water bottle. I never would have thought it, and will be trying it for myself to confirm. One little bit of info, even to an experienced outdoorsman could make all the difference some day. Bottom line is though, it is educational AND entertaining, more than can be said about most stuff on TV these days, which is why I threw mine in the trash almost 9 years ago. If it ain't on YouTube, I can't watch it.

Owlbait, you may have something there. I have been feeling a little "testosterone challenged" lately. Might be too long without a Remote in hand. Lol! Actually, I can't get cable as I live on a Sailboat, regular TV sucks, and I don't really have enough time to watch it to fool around with satelite and such.

LIVE ON A SAILBOAT???  that must be fun . . .

In all honesty who cares if it is staged, it is entertaining, and they both know what they are talking about.  It was cool to see Dave knap that bottle!
Title: Re: Anyone watch Dual Survival on Discovery? Great show.
Post by: owlbait on August 05, 2010, 10:08:00 PM
Well, apparently some of us care if it was staged. I don't envy that sailboat living, to susceptible to motion sickness. Even had some problems on Uncle Sam's Big Gray Boats. I did like the arrow building and knapping sections and the shelter as previously stated. The suggestion that shooting the turkey would be hard to duplicate I challenge ONLY if the turkey was not wild, free ranging, and not under the influence of restraints.

It might be harder to restrain one than to shoot one that is restrained  :bigsmyl:  Could it have been a "domesticated" wild bird that was put there, and restrained for the show? 1...you could see the turkey dragging the rope when he was chasing it
2...the so called spruce tree was in fact a douglas fir tree.
3...when you're lost you follow water downstream to civilization and not risk crossing for no apparant reason.
if they are going to make a show they need to make it real, not staged and for gods sake at least get the trees right.just my observations.
