Title: Please help me figure this out!!!
Post by: Mike Vines on August 01, 2010, 01:39:00 PM
Alright, I have sucessfully built 2 flemish strings, and after picking up my new bow yesterday, I started twisting one up as a spare today.  Well, I get the top loop done, and it holds strong, but then when I do the bottom loop, as soon as I put any tension on it, it all comes unraveled.  What am I doing wrong?

I start with 7" and then I twist the top strands away from me clockwise, and then roll the bottom up towards me counterclockwise, and then keep repaeating.  When I start my fadeout, I separate the colors and do the same thing...twist away clockwise, and then roll the bottom up over the top counter clockwise.  The string is held in my left hand, and I do all the twisting with my right hand.

What am I doing wrong?  Like I said, I have done it with no problems with 2 others, I just can not figure this out.

when you string it i don't think you have enuff twists in the string cause when you string it  will pull  them straight try putting like 10 or 15 twist in the whole string then try it it happened to me once and im sure i did some thing wrong as well and many others here no lota more than i do but i hope it helps

I twist the top strand clockwise as you do but then bring that top strand down over the bottom strand counter-clockwise.  What you describe when twisting should accomplish the same thing.  The only thing I can think of is not enough twists when stringing the bow or possibly twisting the string the wrong way when adjusting the string length by accident and removing twist and lengthening the string.  Believe me I have done that once or twice and it will come apart at that point.

Thanks guys.  I just needed to get away from it for a little while.  I twisted it all back the same exact way, then hooked it on a nail, and twisted the whole string counter clockwise.  Now the bow is strung.  Thanks for the insite.

Mike,

Like yader said, you twists the bundles away from you (clockwise) and braid toward you (counterclockwise), top over the bottom....just opposite what you did.

you probably twisted it in the opposite direction of the top of the string.

No, I was twisting the whole string in the wrong direction once the loops were formed.  Which was causing the whole thing to unravel when I put tension on the string.

Reminds me of the time a string was too long so I twisted it up, THE WROMG DIRECTION!  Ended up having it come apart on me.  I look a little closer when I twist now.
