Title: Wet bows falling apart.
Post by: wapitimike1 on July 31, 2010, 06:06:00 AM
It was awefull wet at Denton Hill this year. Did any one have any issues due to the rain. If so what glue do you recemend that's more water proof for repairs.

Mike, generally, moisture on modern bows isn't a problem if they are wiped down good when you are done.  But give it a little nick where it can find its way through the finish and it can turn ugly. Moisture can get into the wood causing it to swell, and then there is trouble.  I've seen a number of bows guys wanted refinished but they waited too long.  Bad finishes can be fixed.  But the damage done by moisture often can't.

Small nicks need to be sealed.  Fingernail polish works well, or a little Tru Oil.  There's probably other things that will work as well, but the important thing is to get those nicks sealed up somehow.

Another area that can lead to trouble is the limb bolt holes on takedown bows.  If your bow has gotten a good soaking it is a good idea to take it apart and get the holes dried out.

Pay special attention to the tips - they often take the most abuse.  And those rubber tip protectors help against the nicks and scratches, but they also collect moisture.  Take them off and let it dry out if the bow has gotten wet.

Sure enjoyed sharing camp with you this year - looking forward to the next time.

What about superglue to seal the nicks up

That works good too Rick.      Just be careful applying it.  It tends to run very quickly.

To keep it from scratching/nicking into the finish in the first place, can you spray it with another coat of clear? What would you recommend spraying it with? I just had mine refinished, but it seemed to scratch fairly easy in the first place.

Thanks,
