Title: ??? on arrow tuning
Post by: doeslayer on July 27, 2010, 09:16:00 PM
I have a friend who shoots l handed. We are trying to get arrows to tune. Every arrow we have tried is coming out weak( tail right)and tail high. We have adjusted the nocking point both up and down. Plus there is wear on the outside of the rest material as if the arrows are slapping the outside of the shelf. HELP

I beleive nock right is to stiff not weak and a little nock high is ok. Draw lentgh is draw length regardless. If the spine is wrong could be the problem with shelf, if not must be torque. Maybe release.

HOPE THIS HELPS. MEOW!!

Since your friend is shooting left handed tail right would be weak. I would question if your friend has a clean release or as stated previously it could be a torque problem. Check the position of the bow in his hand immediately after the shot.

If the outside of his rest is wearing then his arrows should be stiff.  Are you sure they're not hitting the riser causing a false weak flight?  Try some baby powder on the riser to see if it leaves a mark.  Or if you could listen there will be a very distinctive tic sound that you will hear if it is hitting.

A low nock can give the impression of weak or stiff shaft as well since the arrow is crashing into the shelf and launching off of it, hard to get a good reading that way.  Try raising the nock pt very high so you have an exaggerated nock high kick in the arrow and adjust from there, but definitely get the nock height good 1st.  Other then that, a sloppy release can cause alot of tuning problems and hard to decipher since it changes from shot to shot!

What is the type of bow (recurve/longbow)?

What is his draw length in inches?

Is he shooting carbons outta this bow? if so what spine are they, how long are they in inches?

What point weight is he using on the arrows?

How many pounds does the bow pull at his draw length?

You will get some tail right when they are weak with a lefty.  Big question is where are they printing in relation to aim point...left or right?  Don't worry about the tail.  Once you get them printing POA=POI then you can start trimming 1/4" of to get rid of the tail right.  As long as the tail is within 3" of perpendicular you are good I like to have mine shooting dead on with a little tail left. (right hand shooter).  At that point you are golden.

Give some arrow spec's!
