I think I read you can preserve a turkey tail by fanning it out and rubbing borax into the meaty part. Does this sound right?
make sure you get as much of the meat stripped out as possible. i like to rub salt on all raw meat for a couple of days to draw the juices out (keep adding salt as it becomes saturated) then scrape that off and rub in and coat with borax. do this every couple days as the outside coating becomes wet. after about a week (unless it's really humid) it should be cured out pretty well. to be really sure you can inject a little formaldehyde with a syringe into the fat parts
Cut and trim most of the meat off the base of the tail. You can even cut the base of the quills in the meat. Get it as thin as possible then coat with borax or salt, spread the feathers out where you want them. Use some pins to keep them in position while it dries. It works very well.
borax works for me
As always, Tradgangers come thru. Thanks a bunch. I'm gonna get it a try.
