Title: Hunting footware for WIDE feet?
Post by: firsted on July 25, 2010, 10:55:00 AM
Hey, folks, I've seen a couple posts re: hunting boots, rubbers, etc., but I'm curious if any folks besides me have VERY wide feet (mine are like 5E or 6E width)and have found footware to hunt with?  Right now, my options are New Balance and other New Balance.  For those of you that don't know, trying to wear really tight boots, rubbers, whatever, is just asking for a really bad day!  Very painful.
So, anyone out there found shoes/boots/rubbers that are super wide?  I think I read about one TGer talking about his Flintstone feet - Kinda scary to visualize but probanly in the ballpark!  :bigsmyl:

Thanks for any pointers,

Eddie Paulsgrove

It sounds like you need to go the custom route. Russell Mocassins can make anything you need. They don't make rubber boots, though.

That's funny my girlfriend says I have flinstone feet. My feet are really wide. New Balance are the only running shoes that fit.

I use these and they are actually pretty wide in the 2E.

When it's colder I use these which are also offered pretty wide. They lace to the toe which offers some adjustment for wider feet.

New Balance has a sister company called Dunham that makes boots.  Used to make some decent looking footwear for the outdoorsman, but I just looked at the site and it looks like they've gone to more of a casual style, but you may still be able to find some more rugged stuff on other sites by Dunham.  Their boots go up to 6E.

Thanks guys.  Mocs and boots would both be great!  I'll be checking out all the sites mentioned.
Thanks again,

If you are looking for mountaineering/backpacking type boots you should check out  www.ajbrooks.com. (http://www.ajbrooks.com.)  They are a Canadian company.

The Meindl boots they carry (not the Cabela's Meindl knock-offs) are of the highest quality. Specifically, the Island Pro "wide" (8") and Dovre Extreme (10") are the widest boots of their kind. Pricey, but if you can't find anything else that fits they would be worth every penny.

I also have wide feet, combined with narrow heels, and had trouble finding off the shelf shoes or boots that fit well.

Finally I found two brands that fit my feet!  Keen makes a really good lightweight boot.  I use these in hot weather and for hiking in all but extreme off-trail conditions.  These are a combination of leather and synthetic material.  REI sells them.

Birkenstock, the sandal company, makes a really fine heavyweight boot.  It is all leather with a minimum of seams to come apart.  I've used these boots on 30 day backpacks, mainly off-trail, in the Wind River mountains in Wyoming, and other than scuff marks, they came out of the mountains in as good a shape as they went in.

Whoa!  This is a treasure-trove of good info!  Pricey is fine if the boots fit - as you guys know, footware too skinny hurts like hell!  And there's an REI not too far from where I work so I'll be checking them out for the Birks, too.  Thanks ya'll.

Eddie I posted about having " flintstone feet "But they are only 3 or 4e . I wear out my work boots on the sides before the bottoms . I don't hear much about them but I use the all rubber green boots by Northern . They flex wide and last a couple years , also come with either laces or zippers . I almost died trying to get them Burly"s off as I also have a high arch . My two cents , Fred

I know how you feel. I wear a size 9 6e and I had W C Russel biuld me 2 pair of 12" high lace up boots and they fit perfect. He has a form that you must follow to get the correct fit. This was about 12 years ago and things can change as you know. Good luck

Heck, Fred, if only 3-4E are Flintstone, I guess I've got Hobbit feet!  Had a doctor tell me once that I shouldn't wear shoes but the boxes they come in!  Man, that guy just about needed his OWN doctor!
Thanks for the heads-up about Northern - I'll be checking those out.
