Title: Bear Cam Pics (Somebody Killed a Bear!!) Pics on Pg. 6
Post by: Carbon Caster on May 11, 2007, 05:19:00 PM
Well, do you????

I have had a bait out for 2 weeks now and I can't keep the barrel full!  I finally remembered to bring my camera and put it in on Monday to get some pics.  It is not a high dollar fancy model and I didn't get pics of all the action, but I got a few decent pics I thought I would share.  I might hunt it finally next week.

Not a bad bear at all.  I was hoping for a colored, but I might shoot this one if it shows up.

I got very poor quality before and after photos of the barrel an hour or so before this shot was taken.  HE DRAINED THE BARREL without getting his picture taken and then posed for this one as he was leaving after "Happy Hour".

This is me getting ready to make the half mile hike back out of the bush to my truck after carrying in the bait, refilling the barrel and setting the trail camera.

Here is a pic of a Sow and Cub.  I think if I pushed real hard, I could stuff him in that 7 gallon bucket.  I would of course need to be wearing a kevlar suit and be high on some illegal drug to do that.  LOL!!!!!

Don't know what happened to the last pic!  GRRR!!!

Here is the last pic I got which you can barely make out the paw of the cub as it smacked my camera.  LOL!!!!  The camera was no the worse for the wear, just pointed toward the ground half way around the tree from where it was.  HA HA HA!!!  I almost expected them to eat the camera.  Glad I got lucky so far.

Thanks Leroy!

Ferret,

They remind me of a cross between a circus clown and a 2 year old little kid with just a tiny bit of mongrel dog thrown in the mix.  LOL!!!

I had a ball watching a bear I chose not to shoot last year roll around and play on a pile of bread and grease I put out on the ground on my last hunt last season.  I almost laughed out loud several times.  LOL!!

I carried in a few more play toys and more food for them today.  I took in a 25 gallon metal drum FULL of Meat scraps with molassas covering it.  I also brought in a 25 gallon plastic drum with a wired on lid full of popcorn with a little molassas and frenchfry oil for good measure and 2 1" holes for them to wiggle and shake the kernals out one at a time.  I figured it would keep them interested after they drain the main barrel.  I also wired a 5 gallon bucket full of ROTTEN meat up on the side of a tree.  The bucket has several holes drilled in it to let the JUICES drain out.  LOL!!!  I thought it might bring in a few more bears by the smell and I dont' think they can get it open, but knowing them, they WILL!!!  All that with a barrel full of popcorn and meat scraps again should keep them busy till I get back out on monday or tuesday.  Still not sure if I am going to hunt it then or not.  I might wait a little bit longer to hopefully catch a BIG BOAR cruising for a hot Sow as they come in heat.

Thanks for the pics. I'm going on the Bear hunt/bowbuild two weeks from today. Maybe you can give a few tips for a new bear hunter. How long will they feed at the bait? (long enough for my pulse to settle down I hope) Where do you aim on a broadside shot? etc. Also on that second pic. (hard quartering away) could a person aim for the off front leg and have a lethal shot? I want to know as much as I can.

Thanks in advance

That's why the bears like me David!  LOL!!!

I used to work with a fellow at a steel bar processing plant back when I was in my second year of Bible College that walked up to me one day with a real serious look on his face that said, "YOU ARE ONE SICK AND TWISTED INDIVIDUAL; I respect that in a man!"  HA HA HA!!!!

Just talked to the man that pointed me to baiting at this location and he is going with me on Tuesday and hopes to video me doing exactly what Stobber wished, "Sticking a Big'un!"

Will have more pics at least if nothing else by tuesday night.

Ray,

I don't think it is as big as it looks.  It is close to the camera.  It is a good bear, but it's head looks a little small yet.  I am not a seasoned bear hunter or judger, but I will have a P@Y scorer sitting in a stand right over my shoulder that will smack me if I don't take a shot on a book bear.  LOL!!!!  They might vote you in as pastor and run me off.  HA HA HA!!!

This is the only bit of open ground I cross on my hike in to the bait station.  This picture is taken from the rear bumper of my truck.  It is pretty thick getting thru the bush.  I have broken lots of branches and small trees by buldozing them with my body while carrying a heavy pack.  LOL!!!  Even with the human bulldozing work, it is pretty thick.

I don't have any pics of the hike in.  Always in too much of a hurry to get the trips done back and forth from the truck to feed the bears and get back to the city.  I will try to get a few pics on the way in Tuesday to post.

Here is the view of the bait barrel while "sitting" in my treestand which is about 7 feet off the ground BTW!  LOL!!  Sorry, but it is B/W.

This is the view when "standing" in the treestand.

As you can see, I have LOTS of cover.

Here is a picture from the treestand of a trail leaving the bait station that would be about a 5 yard shot to my immediate left!!!  There was a VERY FRESH pile of enormous scat right on that trail when I was there on friday.

Here is the man that drew me a sketch of this area that he used to bait several years ago.  He went with me to rebait on my second trip out there.  He carried bait in, hung the stands for me and as you can see in the pics trimmed shooting lanes for me.  The barrel I am using belongs to him as well.  I had a bit of a setback as I planned to bait a different area this spring and was just about to throw in the towel until the night at his house when he talked me into going out to this area.  This is a picture of the flat in front of me to the right uphill from the bait.

Thanks a bunch Gun!!!!!  I look forward to having you with me on Tuesday.  If I get to drop the string on one of those big ole popcorn munchers, much of the credit will go to you!!!!

Here is a pic of him out where I park by the well site.

Brian, if Gun is any good, he will slip down and put the calipers on the bear before he tells you to shoot it. Make sure you video this procedure for me, that would be good watching.
Good luck on Tuesday!

Bert - Bet ya don't.  :)
Terry - Funny! Is that how you do it?

It will be fun. We used to call this bait "Bearsville Diner". One year we had 13 different adult Bears coming with 3 different sets of Cubs. Approx. 60% were colored.
That Brian had 4 show up in a week is doin all right. It will only get better. Lookin forward to Tuesday!

Gun are you still planning on wearing that bear costume and laying down by the barrell with that open canister of Sow In Heat lure between your knees?????  Terry said that was the best way to get close enough to get a caliper on the skull when they come in!  LOL!!!

I am looking forward to Tuesday as well.  Give me a call tomorrow.

I haven't worn the suit, I have rolled the barrel around to get the bear out of the scrub brush for a better shot. It was pretty neat having a bear shot 10ft away. The hunter was 15 yards from the barrel and the bear. I was across the barrel from the bear, rolling it away from the bear to get it to move into the open. There was no doubt about the shot placement from my position, we got to give chase and run it down before it decided that it wasn't hurt that bad. Get Gun to pull that one off for you.
Waiting for the story!
Terry

Terry do you have access to a Bear Suit??  If so, what time can you meet us in Edmonton tomorrow??  We will supply the Sow in Heat lure and the rope to tie you to the barrell.  LOL!!!

I will even let you eat what you want out of the barrell while you wait for your "boyfriend" to come in for the shot.  We can get all the action on camera.  If I shoot one it would just be a bonus.  HA HA!!!

We had a surprise when we got to the bait.  Had a 2 year old cub on the bait that ran up a tree.  We waited until we thought he left.  We figured out a few minutes later that he was about 60 feet up in a tree less than 15 feet from the barrell while I was filling here.

This is MOMMA who was up the hill from us and not happy that we were between her and the little one!!!!

She circled us going to where her cub went and was squalling for her.  She was in no hurry and we wanted her out of there, so we could finish baiting and get out to change clothes and get back to hunt, so Gun threw my bow hanger at her and actually threw it past her.  Did she run?  NO!!!!  She went to it like a dog playing fetch.

She was a pretty bear.  We finally just got down and finished baiting before going back to the truck.

This is a picture of what they did with my play toys.  THEY RIPPED HOLES IN THEM!!!!  BAD BEARS!!!!

The hole in the blue drum and the white 5 gallon bucket were not cut by me, they were made by the bears.  If they don't start taking better care of their toys, I am going to take them away.  LOL!!!

Here is a good track on the trail on the way out to the truck.

There was a bear on bait when we got close enough to see the barrel that took off.

Not 10 minutes after getting situated in the stand, this bear came in.

Here is a pic of it when it walked up the hill and left the bait for the FIRST time.

We were on bait from 5:30 to almost 10:00 and there was never a time that this bear was not within site for more than 20 minutes at a time.  It came to within 4 feet of our tree one time and I thought it was going to get up on a log and swat at us to play with it before it got scared and backed up.  Remember, I am 7 feet off the ground.  LOL!!!  When it came to bait the first time it started by picking thru meat scraps in the barrel and taking the ones it liked up the hill near us to either eat them or leave them lay on the ground and go get another.  Later, it would lay down behind the barrel and eat popcorn for long periods of time.  It was still on bait when we came down and went out to the truck.  It just looked at us as if to say, "see ya later!"  Had a great time with lots of excitement, but alas no bears showed up that I wanted to drop the string on.

Here is another picture Gun took of our friendly neighborhood circus bear.

I have some videos of the circus bear and may put them up later if I ever fugure it out.

Had a great time tonight!!!  I wanted to get out of the stand and wrestle that stupid bear a few times, but I still had a great time.  LOL!!!!

Very cool! Not a dull moment the whole time. Has your heart come down out of your throat yet
It wouldn't be the worst idea to carry a couple rubber blunts in case he wants to get a little too friendly. This really gets me pumped for when I draw for a black bear in Wisconsin in a couple years. Look forward to more action from Alberta! Cheers, Matt

Thanks guys and Shell.

Carrying heavy packs and getting woofed at by Momma Bears is a good stress test for the heart every year.  LOL!!!

I WILL have a rubber blunt in my quiver next time just incase.  I would hate to shoot one at a animal, but I would rather do that, than have to kill a smaller bear that gets a little too friendly.

If the circus bear comes in on friday, I should get some better pictures of him or her post mortum.  I am bringing a friend with me that has never shot a bear, and this one would sure make a nice rug and a GOOD first bear for anybody.  It would be a good 4th or 5th bear for anyone, I am just being PICKY!!!  LOL!!!

I kept trying to get Gun to climb down and put the cliper on it's head so we would know for sure what it would score, but that didn't happen.  I sure wish Terry would have come up in his bear suit last night.  THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FUN THAN IS PROBABLY LEGAL!!!

Couldn't come up there Brian, I was packing groceries for the bears a little further south.
A bridge washed out turning the pack into a 2 miler each way. 100 loaves of bread and 50lbs of meat. There are some bears on that bait as well, they just sat and watched the delivery guy who left his bow at the truck. I would have calipered 1 if the bow had been with me, I just got to woof him up a tree as it was. He returned the favor and woofed me back to the bridge.

The "Friendly Neighborhood Circus Bear" wasn't so friendly tonight!!!!!!  She charged me while I was trying to bait tonight and I had to put her down.  She is a beautiful bear, but I hate it had to happen like this!  I buy another tag tomorrow and hopefully get a chance to get a big one with the Border Griffon GL Monday.  Had to put a slug in this one as she charged me at about 12-15 feet.  You guys that are baiting bears be careful out there.  I would have never dreamed in a hundred years that "THIS" bear would get aggressive to the point of trying charging me at a full run!!!  THEY ARE WILD ANIMALS and treat them as such.  I let my gaurd down with this bear.  I used to say I dind't even have a healthy fear of Black Bears, I DO NOW!!!  She has the thickest pretiest coat I have ever seen.  I will post more later.

Yeah, glad you're ok. That's too bad that that was the case. They definitely are wild animals, even though they seem to act like pets some of the time. At the same time that you had to put this one down it's nice to just be able to go down and buy another tag. Back in Wisconsin you'd have to wait another 5-9 years to get another tag. Again, glad to hear you're alright and look forward to the rest of the hunt. Cheers, Matt

Here is her hide draped over my deep freeze being guarded by 2 of my little girls.

Here is a picture showing how long she was for perspective.  Right at 65" tail to nose.

Had some backstrap grilled to well done on the grill tonight with a bit of Barbeque sauce and it was GOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!  After I freeze it for a month to make sure the parasites are a non issue, I look forward to having some cooked a tad less than well done.  MMMMMM GOOOOD!!!

I will NEVER understand why so many people think bear does not taste good.  It is actually some of my favorite wild game.  I think it is just a mental block, kind of like I have with Possum!!  LOL!!!  Have you ever seen a possum crawl out of the south side of a north facing dead bloated cow??????  If you have, you understand my mental block, if not you do now.  LOL!!!!

65" is a pretty good bear Brian, I have measured a few, most are in the 59-62" range nose to tail. Have you green scored the skull for interest. I have a number wrote down just for kicks, see how close I am.
Feeding again tomorrow, hopefully whacking one on Wed night. Good luck with your bow.

Terry,

I don't know how to measure a bear for skull score.  I am just a dumb American afterall.  LOL!!!

Tell me how to measure and I will.  I hope you get one Wednesday.

Tomorrow and Tuesday I will be out there.  I hope the big fellow that has been leaving me HEAPING piles of enormous scat and making BIG tracks shows up one of the next two days while I am there.

Terry,

The best I can tell from my uneducated mesuring is between 16.5-17".  She is a good bit smaller than I plan on drawing the string on tomorrow.  The girls had a ball helping me skin her.  LOL!!!

the bear skull is measured by adding the width to the length- in inches. You want to therefore be careful not to break the rather thin bone around the eye socket. If you get close to 18 inches; which is the p&y minimum; then get it scored.
I heard once - long ago in the last century; that only about 5% of P&Y bears were sows.
I shot a sow that was offically weighed over 600 pounds; and it was a 6 plus footer; but she only scored 16 and something.
Your daughters are so cute! must be nice to have little angels around  :)
And about the demeanor of the bear; they do get territorial - and they will defend their territory. Although they can look like they are pretty harmless and dimwitted at times- they are animals that live partially: by killing other things.
I have had hunters walk under my stand and stop and talk; and not be aware of me. More than once I asked them to move on - so they wouldn't scent up the area; and not even in one case did they look up and see me.
I really wonder - after looking back at the photos- if the bear knew you were there all along; and finally got sick of you coming into her territory? 7 feet gives a good angle; but most bears that know the motive of humans on bait piles- would not fall for a 7 foot stand; they would see or smell you you and not come in. I wonder if this bear was really being aggressive all along to you ?
I would hate for the bear to have completed its charge.. !!
Hey and thanks for the wonderful visual on the oppossum  :(        LOL
I like bear meat too; unless they are eating fish; in which case; they taste horrible. I have heard ( do a lot of that ) that grizzlies that live where they don't depend on fish taste good; but that brown and grizzlies eating off fish runs taste bad.
I had not heard about the freezing trick with the meat. Bear meat can be sooooo good  :)

Well, at about 7:30 tonight the BIG sow with "FOUR" cubs came in.  It was a circus for a while.  Momma would circle us in the bush and get a little closer each time she came by the stand.  I knew if she got much closer, it might get ugly, so the next time she left the barrel and the FOUR cubs  and got a good ways away in the bush, I woofed about 6 times and those cubs almost came unglued getting out of there.  We waited about 30 minutes and when they hadn't returned yet, we decided it was time to head for the truck.  We walked out on pins and needles.  That sow is a TANK!!!  I got some video with my phone of the cubs eating and fighting a bit as well.  LOL!!!  I sure hope I don't run into her and the brood again on friday.

Actually, we were eating PANCAKES & BACON!!!!!!

Delin should be along this evening to tell the tale.  We got home about midnight last night.  We skinned his bear, got the hide rolled up to put in the freezer, and put the quarters in the freezer to cool down while we went inside and ate a big plate of speghetti.  By the time we got done cutting and packaging the meat we were cleaned up and ready for bed about 2:00am.  We were up after 7:00 and Delin and I cooked breakfast for my wife and girls.  We had a great time.  I don't envy his 5 hour trip home.  He presented me with a BEAUTIFUL little Soligen Steel Stag handled pocket knife this morning as a thank you gift.  I LOVE IT!!!!  I almost forgot the delicious pies he brought with him for us when he came yesterday.  MAN THEY WERE GOOD!!!!!

I will post more later after he has a chance to get home and get to telling the tale.  I think I enjoyed watching everything unfold last night as much or more than Delin enjoyed it.  If you could have seen his face and actions before, during, and after the moment of truth; you would know that was quite a lot.  LOL!!!!

Well I'm home thanks again Brian for the hospitality and thank your lovely wife and girls for treating a stranger like family.well I guess every one is waiting for the story. Well Brian and I walked in to the bait filled the barrels and walked back to the truck to get our bows and hunting clothes when we returned we walked in quietly so as not to desturb any one hanging around. We climbed into the treestand, no easy feet for me since I am a flatlander and am not even use to seeing trees never mind being in one and to boot I have a very healthy fear of hieghts. No sooner than we both got into the stands Brian whispers "here they come " and all of a sudden there were 3 bears Brian still had his pack on I was still clinging to the tree for dear life. Keep in mind we had only been in the stand about two minutes. Now when my heart returned to my chest I sat down and we started observing the bears meanwhile Brian dropped his seat pad and the bears didn't even look up. After watching them for 3 or four minutes we realized there was one with a beautiful white triangle in the middle of her chest. We figured these were the 2 year olds Brain had seen earlier but with no sign of mama he figured she gave them the boot. I told Brian if the one with the white spot gives me a clear shot I would take it. Because of the angle of the 2nd treestand and my lack of skill in a treestand I couldn't shoot while the bears were on bait almost as if the bear heard us it wondered over to the empty popcorn bag Brian had placed last week it sniffed the empty bag turned around and walked broadsideto me at about 10 yards (even I couldn't miss at that range!!!!) my arrow went into the bear a little high and forward but on impact the bear spun around like a remote control car with the arrow looking like the attennea, the bear took off and ran about 15 yards and crashed within sight of the stand the other two bears scampered up the tree like their butts were on fire about 2 minutes later one came down and resumed eating his fill the other bear was kind of a baby and stayed in the tree for probably another 10 minutes before finally coming down and running off into the bush. Meanwhile we were high fiveing and I even forgot I was sitting way up in a tree. This was my first bear hunt with my bow and even though this is a small bear it is a world class trophy in my eyes. Finally when Brian figured I was composed enough not to fall on my head climbing out of the treestand we got down to move my bear to under the treestand in case another bear came in. Brian took the picture you saw my bow was still up in the treestand. and then we got back up and waited anxiously for another bear to come in I was so high on adrenaline the next four hours went by fast and although we didn't see another bear it was worth it to sit and contemplate the greatness of nature and the wonders and beauties around us all the time being mocked by P&Y squirrels and one that might even make Boone and Crokett I'll tell you they are lucky I was on shotgun duty and had lowered my bow with the judo on it or they would've attacked us for the last time.  When we gutted the bear back at the truck we found my srrow had just nicked one lung but destroyed the heart and hit the corated (sorry for the spelling) and had hit the opposite shoulder the arrow had broken off but we found both pieces and continued to pick out wood splinters from my cedar arrow most ofthe time we were butchering. I used my 49# Cari-bow Siver Fox with homemade cedar arrows and 125gr zwiggy heads. I have dreamed of a hunt like this all my life and I will remember every detail forever Thanks again Brian for making a stranger feel like family I am still on an incredable high and I feel better than I have for years.  Delin

Its an awesome feeling isnt it! CONGRATS TO YOU!!!

Oh and one tip. I feel like I am going to fall out of my treestand unless I am wearing my saftey harness. Once that is good to go I feel like I could dance up the tree. I jsut bought a gorilla 5 point saftey harness. It works excelent and there is a climbing line and a up in your tree and set up line that you use. One of the best investments I have made over the little crappy one that came with teh stand.

Congrats again!!!

Well, unless someone else in Alberta wants to drive up and go out with me tomorrow, I am heading out for my last hunt of the season by my self tomorrow.  There is a Sow that I THINK will make P@Y that has already kicked her young ones out so she can breed that will be in serious trouble if she comes in for a bite to eat.  I still haven't seen the BIG TANK of a bear with a rubbed out rear haunch in daylight hours.  With Sows in Heat I may see ANYTHING tomorrow night.

Well it isn't going to happen this spring!!  I got home a few minutes ago and no bears were seen tonight.  I had an enjoyable evening watching thos P@Y Squirrels as well as counting Coup on a Raven at 12 yards.  THAT WAS AWESOME!!!  I had no intention of killing it, but to be able to draw on one of those rascals without them taking off is amazing.  Just getting them to land near you is tough.  They have to be one of the smartest critters in the bush.

I think killing 2 bears in a weeks time at the bait may have pushed the bigger bears nocturnal.  Oh well, I had a great time this spring and look forward to next year already.

Thanks for going along with me fellows.  I hope to do this again next year.

My brother was at the bait site Friday and took in a large bag of day old doughnuts and 60 lb of meat and when he went back on Monday it was all gone...we are going out in the mud this afternoon...it is like soup everywhere out here. We will have to quad about a mile and then walk in about 300 yds...peregrine & shotgun in hand.I will keep this post going with updates.

Well, Dennis ought to be coming out of the bush about now.  Unless he is tracking a BARRRRRR!

I leave for the airport in a little over an hour, so I hope he posts soon.  I sure hope he didn't get eaten.  I would almost miss him.  My wife would miss being "accidentally" mistaken for one of my daughters on the phone when he calls.  LOL!!!!

Heading for the airport in the morning as well, no bears here yet either. Sat twice and donated a bunch of blood. Had the bears eat my camera. Hope Dennis gets a crack at one!

Partner just phoned after sitting tonight. More standing than sitting, the seat got eaten off his stand last night. Bait was cleaned out and ripped up. He had left his daypack hanging by his stand, it was ripped to bits as well. No bears again, but he is pumped for tomorrow, last day. It will be his first bear with a bow if it shows up. He can't believe how much food was inhaled in a 18 hour period. 100 loaves of bread, 50 lbs of oats and about 25 lbs of meat all soaked with grease. The grease must be bad, crap all over the place.

Brian,
Thanks for the great pictures and stories.  That's one of the reasons I love this place.

Dennis, are you working Sunday evening?
Flying back to Calgary from Kelowna, dropping milk in Vancouver first, may see you if you are.
Need to talk about the farmers.

Brian I also had a Bear Encounter I sat on Stand At FT Murray after work one nite a 4.5 ft bear arrived came to my stand woofed jumped up my tree twice then went to my friends  stand charged stand also jumping up his tree I finally decided that I should take out this trouble maker so I shoot the beast with my Stealth Recurve and A big snuffer apon the hit the bear ran 20 yards climbed a tree 10' stayed up tree 20 seconds then charged back ran up my frends tree my buddy had no choice but to shoot the bear in the face at 2' we have it on tape I will show it to you one day the arrow I put in the bear only took out 1 lung as I found out all bears are dangerous and are not to be trusted
