Heading up for an August hunt. Had planned to take my thermocells. I have heard that taking the thermocell cartrige into Ontario might be prohibited as it might be considered an explosive. Conjecture aside, anyone have first hand knowledge on this subject?
I don't think you will have a problem unless your flying. I drove up with a bunch of them 2 years aso with no issues at all.
No problem at all going to Quebec last year. Just pack them in with your gear.
If you are flying and hunting with an outfitter you can ship the cartridges to the outfitter.
Don't know about driving and going through customs at the border.
Drove twice into Onterio with 6 six thermacells and probably 1/2 gross of butane cartridges in the past 2 years. No problem at all, they are more concerned with cigarettes, alcohol and guns that is being taken accross. They don't care about thermacells and laugh about bows when you tell them that your going after bears with them.
You cannot fly with the butane cartridges. The rest of the thermocell is OK.If you are flying check with the outfitter if there is a place to buy the refills close by.Where are you heading to ? Good Luck with your hunt.

Never had a problem driving through. Don't go to Canada without one !
I've flown with them a fair amount. And as with most things related to air travel, it all depends on the agent checking/scanning your checked bag. I had one agent ask me if my bow was unloaded and then asked me to show her.
I've had brand new boxed Thermacells left alone and had them opened and the butane removed. I've had the best luck putting a few butane cartridges in my shaving kit and scattering others in different places. Shipping them to Canada is a good idea if you handle it properly. Just don't try taking them in your carry on, that will cause you a delay.......
thanks for the input. We're driving across the border so looks like it should be a non-issue.
We drove across last September and all had thermacell and refills. No problems at all. We didn't volunteer that we had them though!
Why don't you just buy them when you are up here? (Ontario)
Don't be a pussy, save the money for gas, beer or a tip for the guides, the bugs up here are not an issue this time of year.
Take a look at the bear hanging next to me in my avatar picture. I shot him in NW Ontario the first week of the fall season several years ago wearing a short brim baseball style cap and NO FACE NET. In the spring I always wore a Shannon's Bug Tamer suit and gloves - totally sealed up! Not in the fall though. Aside from a few knats I never saw any giant mosquitoes or black flies. It was like hunting late October whitetails back home!
