Hey Guys. I'm coming over to Colorado from Australia in September hunting Unit 45 for Bear and Elk. Anyone have any experience/tips in that unit. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I will be hunting with blokes from the area but love to gather as much info as possible as this will be my first bear and elk hunt. I will be using my Jim Jone Firefly which is 55# at my draw of 26", Carbon Express Heratige 250's with Blackstump 2 blade broadheads, 630gr all up.
i have no idea about the unit. all i have to say is good luck and enjoy the mountains for what they are....god's country!
Thanks mate. I certainly will.
Hunted it a bit, elk are ok but the muleys were great!
Glad to hear you are going to get a chance to come over here and have a go at some of our critters Matt! I have hunted Colorado quite a few times but never that particular unit so I regrettably have no information to give you.
I don't have any question that your setup is plenty adequate for any elk you may run up against. Good luck and have fun!!!
Should be a great trip no matter what the outcome. Just to be in another country with stick and string is good enough for me. Anything else will be a bonus.
They chased all the elk out of that Unit. Nothing but prarie dogs now. :biglaugh:
I actually don't know much about it either, but have a friend over there that rifle hunts it every year and does really good. He packs back in with his horses though. Like others have said the deer hunting is pretty good, if you have a tag for them.
:biglaugh: Thanks mate. I unfortunately dont have a deer Tag. Only Bear and Elk. I will just have to make do with the camera for the deer.
I have hunted in unit 47 that is almost next to 45 and have driven through portions of 45. As with all the units along the continental divide it is very rugged and high elevation. The elk are there but it is a climb to get to them. If 45 is anything like 47 there should be plenty of bears. Last year I saw bear sign everywhere and the trip before saw 4 bears in one week. You should have a great time and the scenery in that area is unbelievable.
