Title: My latest DIY Bow hunting UL shelter
Post by: Hardcorehunter on July 15, 2010, 09:24:00 PM
Here is my latest UL shelter for hunting trips, when I don't feel the need for my UL sil-nylon tipi and UL wood burner. I did it all myself. Everything here I made except for the Black Diamond carabiners. This is 1.1 oz breathable ripstop, doubled for the hammock body. The tarp is 1.3 oz sil-nylon and is 10X12. The ridge line of the tarp is 12'. Tie downs on the tarp are every 2'. Ridge line suspension is 1/8" Amsteel and so are the tie outs to the tree hugger webbing. All suspension and tie out cords, are  DIY whoopie slings. For those not aware of what a whoopie is, it is a rope that slides in itself and is the lightest and most adjustable knot free adjustment available. When weight is applied to the rope, it locks up much like a Chinese finger trap. Amsteel is the strongest rope known to man and the 1/8" diameter I used is rated for 2500 lbs. The tarp tie out cords  are just made out of regular poly rope that I whoopied by removing the core that runs down the middle. I have done the same with parachute cord. Here are some various tarp setups I can do if I choose. I haven't weighed it, but it is light and the entire setup is seen here in my DIY stuff sack. Bug net installs and removes easily and is open and closed by simply cinching a drawstring on each end. The foot is kept drawed and you simply open the cinch near the head end, get in the hammock, and re draw the end. No bugs can get in and it is no seeum mesh. Now I am ready for an outing in it.

Have fun.

Very nice. You plan on using that in Iowa?   ;)   That looks like a great system for our early season.

That is real cool. Was it hard to build, and where do you get your materials? A river hunt would be a blast. Good luck!!

Thanks. Steadman, I learned everything on hammockforum.com. I spent hours reading and researching on there. These guys know there stuff, it is all in the DIY section. I get supplies from Quest Outfitters and I get my amsteel blue rope from redden marine.

Thanks, I just got back from the Post Office and my entire setup weighs 3.88 oz. Pretty lightweight imo and no sleeping pad to carry.

What was the total cost of materials?

I'll get it out soon hopefully. Waiting for the extreme heat and humidity to to ease up. Total cost of material; approx $100. a 10X12 sil nylon tarp alone though will cost around $120 by itself if already made and store bought.

I had to sew a stove jack in the SL-5 as they don't come with one. These are a great UL shelter and will easily hunt 2 guys and their bow hunting gear out of it.

Here are some pics of a huge front sun porch setup. This is where these hammock/tarp setups shine imo, especially in warm weather, over a tent. You can setup so many variations and the hammock can be used as a chair to sit in for eating or just sitting in.

Those whoopie slings look pretty slick. When you make them with para cord do you pull out the core strings?

Yes, you have to pull out the core strings when making them out of para cord. They are slick. I just ordered some 7/64 amsteel blue, and I am going to make all of my tarp tie outs out of it. It is rated for something like approx 1400 lbs.  It is superior to anything else. Knots will reduce the strength of rope by 60% from what I have read, so, whoopies and line splicing are superior to knots.

I used to tie a taut line hitch to secure and tighten tarp tie outs, but they are a real pain sometimes. Looks like I could just make a bunch of whoopie slings and never have to worry about tying difficult knots again... Could you thread your line through the tie out on your tarp before inserting back through the line to make the whoopie so it's sort of permanently attached to the tarp? Would it make sense to do it that way?

wbyrd, I leave the loop hitched to the tarp tie outs and that way they are ready to go. I do the same with my hammock whoopies also. This sets ups in a few minutes.

Leaving the loop hitched to the tarp is exactly what I was thinking. I just made one up (without a tarp) using para cord, kind of difficult without some type of needle (used an alenwrench lol). But man these are really cool, I can definitely see using them for all kinds of stuff. Thanks for making this post!

Get a blunt needle, darning needle with an eye, and I use a small pair of vice grips to secure the very tip of the needle once I come out where I want to in the rope. This makes it easy to make these whoopies. You need to pull out three strands near the end to to make a taper. Samson rope has a pdf on their website showing you how, and so does hammockforum.com
