O.K........I need a general opinion here on these two risers. Right after Compton I put in an order for my very own Stalker "Striker" Recurve built by South Cox. I was (and still am) up in the air about which riser I like the best. My wood choices were something that I have had in my mind for quite some time now. Cocobolo and Osage. Being the nice guy that he is, he said that he would build a riser "both ways" and let me choose which one I liked the best. I "thought" that would make the choice a little easier........but.........as you can see from the picture below, they BOTH look dang nice !!!
My intentions are to have the limb veneers match the side of the riser's wood on each side. In other words either osage on the belly side and cocobolo on the back side, or vice versa.
Choices.........choices.........choices :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Give me some help here folks......PLEASE !!!
The sooner that I make my choice, the sooner he can start gluing up the limbs. Either way, this is gonna be one nice lookin' bow.

Where are my pics? Don, what a choice to make! I like the one on the right. I heard I was in the top 3 to finish so I should be close to yours in finish time.
WOW!! Those are beautiful! Looks like you'll be a winner either way.
Nalajr
I like the dark wood on the outside for camo reasons. They are some nice pieces.
Dang I should have got the other one.
Boy, looks like your hand would sink right into those grips, doesn't it? I'm partial to the left one too. But, yeah, both are perfect really.
Some juniper limb veneers would look nice with either one of those.
I prefer the riser on the right, the grain of the Cocobolo on the upper section is amazing.
Wow what a choice, maybe you could just get both of them. Or maybe put both in a hat and draw one out. Either way your going to have a great bow. I have one bow that has the osage in the center and it would be my choice. I shot one up there and was impressed so you are getting a great bow.
Good luck on choosing! That is the hardest thing for me when ordering a bow. It comes down to what you like...no one else.
Really digging the riser on the left. The cocobolo on the heel of the grip is awesome and I just like the layup of that one better. Either way you'll do just fine, nice looking risers for sure...Mike

Now there is an idea that I had been "toying" with anyways. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm :banghead:

DROOL! Look at that grip! Man. Waiting is going to be even harder now.
I like the right one, the coco is beautiful. I think as the osage mellows it will be a better accent than the majority color. I also think the stripes stand out better with the right one. They are both beautiful.
I think it's an optical illusion but the riser with the cocobolo on the outsides looks shorter and squatter than the other one. I like short and squat looking...in a bow riser anyways.
The one on the left, for sure.
No, make it the one on the right - I really like it with more cocobolo.
No, always trust your first instincts. Definately the one on the left.
Did I help? :D
You can't make a bad choice :bigsmyl:
For me it is impossible to choose one and be totally confident that I made the right choice.
Have to get both to be certain.
Whew!!!
Good luck with this.
John
Get them both! They'll be twins!
I usually lean more to the right. Far right. With this choice I have to say LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT!! :jumper:
Okay.......just got off the phone with South. I went with the one on the................................................................................................................................................................................. ...................................................................................................................................LEFT............................
Thank-You all for your most valued opinions. I also asked him if he didn't already have any, if he could find me some juniper or eastern red cedar for laminations of BOTH belly and back of the bow. I'm thinking that the reds/yellows/oranges will work just WONDERFUL with the osage and cocobolo.
Thank-You.......Travis aka 4point for that suggestion. Your suggestion just turned this bow into a masterpiece. Now to just sit back and wait for South to work his magic and before you know it......the bow will be in my grubby little hands.
I agree with Mike about the "grips" on these bows. They sure do look and feel GREAT.

Both risers are equally beautiful. The choice, for me, would be easy to make since you stated that the veneers match the same wood of the riser at the contact areas. I like the back of my limbs to be dark.
I too think the risers are really nice. The heel of the grip reminds me of my Fox High Sierra. I also think scaled checkering on the grip would be cool (like Norm at Blacktail does). This is a bow I've never heard of -- I hope this isn't another "here we go again" experience for me. I had never given Blacktail bows a 2nd thought until Winterhawk and Caccitorre started sharing pictures. Now I have a new 1-piece and a Snake Bit is due next July!
Those are nice Don.I have had a few risers done with coco bolo and Osage together. They are a sweet marriage for sure.
One of the bows I had made had pacific Yew veneers that really looked great with those riser woods.Very natural and very complimentary without being to busy.
Eric,
Great minds think alike.......huh ???
The one on the left caught my eye. Nice
SWEEEEET!

Just take take both. It's easier that way. No. Then the one on the left has come home. When I look at them that one really catches my eye.
Don,
What are the Stalker's grips similar too? Is the width of the grip wider like the your Blackfeather or slimmer like your Blacktail?
Can't wait to see the finished product.
Travis
Hey Don,
That are 2 great looking risers. Somehow the shape of the grip reminds me of something! ;)
And I also would go for the left riser, great choise!
Arnold
Right.
Travis,
The grip is more similar to my Wallace "Mentor", which is wider than the Blackfeather, but not by much. It's thicker through the throat than the Blacktail "Snakebit" is.
Don't worry, there will be plenty of pictures and a review after I receive her and have some time to play a little bit.
Arnold,
Thank-You.......kind sir !!! That really means a lot coming from a fella with the talent that you posess.

I wish I had your problem, both look fine to me, but I'm a sucker for Osage...lol!
Just buy both of them, then you don't have a problem, any how its only money Harold :banghead: :archer2:

Yeah...one on the right looks like it has longer legs!

+1

I'm with ya.....I like the accent stripe better on the same one. We should all receive our bows by the end of this month. I think......but I'm not positive that he wants to get them done before heading east for ETAR. I sure hope so anyways.
Those grips sure do look "comfy".......don't they ???
Winterhawk1960
That looks like a good combination of wood to me.
Hey.....no fair, I didn't get any pictures of my new riser. :D
Both are very attractive, but i like the right one most.Sorry Don.
How are you guys getting pics? I have to admit, it just makes it harder for me to wait. I like the gray on the left!
none of them ...there not lefty!!! LOL marco
I like the one one the left .... or the more i look at it the one on the right looks darn good too :knothead:
I guess I prefer the riser on the left. The osage will darken with age so... well maybe the one on the right is better looking...Nope! I say the one on the left is more "distinctive". I like how the dark cocobolo creates a dense, narrow look right at the center of the riser.
"Go left young man!"
Back up for a buddy.
I like the coco center
I like the riser on the right. I like slim grips and I know it is just an optical illusion but the coco being very thin at the pivot point makes the overall grip look more graceful to me. I definitely like the two-tone wood arrangement. I have osage-faced limb veneers on my Fox High Sierra. It stayed pretty bright for about a year. Then I noticed it darkening. These days it is simply a hint of yellow, it looks very nice.
