I got a call saying that the only thing left on my bear rug is to put the felt on. I don't know what colors to get. I would like two colors one of them being black. My dad has charcoal and black so I don't want that choice. What do you recommend? I am thinking a brown that is the same color as the nose then black. It is the hide off of a 260 pound bear with nice black fur. Thanks
Just curious but what is it for, the bottom side?
I had mine done in black next to the hide and maroon/deep burgundy on the bottom and it look great.
I have one that has black and brown felt that looks very nice.
What does it cost to get a bear hide done?
I've got tan and black around mine and have always liked it.
I'm a taxidermist but have the sewing done by someone else.My rugger had suggested the burgundy and black so we did several. They looked real nice. The charcoal sounds good as would brown or tan.I'm not big on the red or green that some do.
Dark brown and black. The dark brown looks good with the brown of the nose, at least I think so.
I saw one done in burnt orange...set off the black hide very nicely.
I never have liked the traditional reds and greens that are commonly used.
I went with black and black... The taxidermist shook his head when I said that, but had to agree that it looks really good.
Black so you can wear it out on Halloween...LOL
went with black on mine looks really nice, looks bigger too, does collect the dust though, Todd
All black on mine.
Add me to the list of folks that don't like red and green. Never liked it and cannot figure out why it is so popular.
Always been a fan of the black as it makes the hide look bigger, but I would like to see the maroon and black.
IMO don't do this http://www.billsbearrugs.com/bear/fm0326.jpg That ruffle is horrible.
This site does a nice job and seems to match the color of the bear to the felt. http://www.cdnantler.com/bearrug.html
Do some googlin' you will see what you want.
I picked black and a golden bronze/brown color. Not the best pic of my bear but shows the colors.

I have seen some beautiful rugs with one of the felt colors being red...
Both of mine are done in black. It really looks nice and big. My taxidermist gave me a weird look when I told him I wanted black.

My bear is still roaming somwhere in Canada but I would have yellow against the hide and black on the outside. I just like yellow.
Black on Black !
What kind of felt? No felt, it picks up every little piece of lint and hair in the house. I'd go for felt backing with a nice smooth leather border. I had a kudu backskin done like that and it's been great so far.
Black and red on my bear i like it. TD.
I did my Wi. Bruin in Hunter green,I think it set the hide off nicely---1Longbow
I went Black and Brown as I felt the brown would look good with the brown muzzle on my bears face.. Mine's still at the taxadermist's and will be for a while :banghead:
I won't know if my choce was good or bad for some time yet

Any pictures for me to see? I would love to see some with black/black, black/tan, black/burgandy. Thanks for the help.
Green then black border. All black to me just looks like you are trying to "cheat a little" to make the bear look bigger than it is.
On my Grizzly hide, I had the light brown( an off tan) and dark chocolote.
I've done both of my Bears Black on Black. Makes them look even larger!

I like the black on black as well. Other colors seem jarring and out of place. (Besides it makes my bear look bigger. LOL) But I decided to put off having the rug done until I can't hunt anymore and use the money for more hunts. Mine's over the back of a chair atm.
I had one done with black/green and another black/red.As soon as I got them home I cut the green and red off, leaving just the black.I think the brighter colors tend to distract people from the rug itself.JMO

:biglaugh: I think not having a bit of a contrast of whatever color also distorts the outline of the bear somewhat. The border actually highlights what a bear hide actually looks like. Just an opinion as always-hey, there are guys who think people don't notice the combover either! :biglaugh:

I like a short tan tan border with a longer tasseled hunter green. Just my two cents :D
Black on black...no ruffles!
A friend of my has his done with green. Like sharp.
I ordered black on black. Thanks for all the help.
