Does anyone know how to build a spine tester or have any plans they would share
The latest issue of 'Primitive Archer' has complete instructions for one.
Paul
I looked it up; it's 'Spine Tester from Scratch' by RON PRUSINKI, in the June/July issue.
was that a scripted question? LOL
You can also google it and get numerous plans. I believe the one I built came from the boyer's den, or something like it. It took me about three hours, and works every bit as well as a "real" one.
Hawkin, Thanks for the info, guess I need to subscribe to primative archer LOL
Grapes, I am kinda new to this forum, please explain what you mean by "scripted question"?
James,
Surprisingly, even my local drug stores and grocery stores carry 'Primitive Archer', but if it's not that easy to find out your way, a large bookseller like Barnes and Noble or Borders should have it. That article is in the current issue, so you have time. If you can't find it locally, send me your mailing address through a PM and I'll send you my copy (I'm finished with it).

Just kidding around. I guess I'm the only one who got it. Oh well, sometimes I make myself laugh.
Hey Paul, The Borders by me is pathetic when it comes to hunting magazine selection. But it is right next to Bass Pro, and they usually have what ever flavor I'm looking for.
Just joined Primitive Archer. Dont know if I will get the issue or next months. I need a spine tester bad.
I caught it Mike ;) . At first, I thought the timing may have been a little 'too' coincidental, but that does not seem to be the case here.
You guys have me "scratching"!...lol
I'm not even close to being the sharpest stick in the pile so I still haven't "gotten" it??
If it won't ruin the joke please tell me the punch line...Thanks!
God bless,Mudd
Pete Ward.com has plans for the one I built.
Here's plans for the one I built. Made mine a little fancier cause I didn't like the looks of the metal bracing used in the plans. But hey, it all works.
Sold mine to a friend and am in the middle of building another to spine the 500 cane shafts I recently received.

I use a 2lb. weight suspended from screws set into my workbench 26" apart. While the device won't tell you the spine weight of a shaft, it'll
Put 2 screws into your workbench, 26" apart. Leave enough of the screws exposed that you can lay a shaft across them. Get a 2lb. weight from WalMart in the fitness section. Connect a short wire to the weight; connect an "S" hook to the other end. Center a 3x5 card between the screws, a litte lower than the screws.
Lay a shaft across the screws. Hook the weight to it, and mark with a thin-lead pencil on the card at the point the shaft bends to.
You now have a reference point. If the next shaft bends less, it's a heavier spine. If it bends more, it's a lighter spine.
This won't work to determine the specific spine weight of an unknown shaft, which is probably what you want. But, if you have an arrow that is the spine you want, you can test any other unknown spine shaft against it. I mean to say if you know you have the correct spine, you can sort a hundred shafts to find that same spine, thus finding a matched set.
Thanks guys for your time and effort, especially Jim for sending the plans for the spine tester. I already have everything in my shop to build, even a 1" dial indicator. One question: on your chart spine 50, deflection 0.520, would that be for a 50# bow?
Thanks again...............James
The 50 spine and deflection .520 refers to the stiffness of the arrow and makes no reference to bow draw weight. Most modern recurves and R/D longbows pulling 50# @ 28" will need arrows spined at 65-75#.

Another vote for the Jim Hill plans. I built mine following his plans and it works great!
