Title: Wood arrow finish?
Post by: owlbait on July 08, 2010, 12:46:00 PM
I have some POC shafts coming from Ted Fry. I want to use a Stalker stain on the shafts. Can I put Danish oil over the stain? Thanks for any help.

If you can put it over the stain I don't know. Danish Oil is water resistant and doens't affect your spine. It'll make your arrow darker. which looks very nice. You don't need to stain it before. A lot of friends of mine put it directly on the shaft, a few layers.
Danish Oil consists out of a lot of Tung-Oil, which is used for ages in Asia to impreg wood (i.e. ships) to make it water-resistent.

As a matter of fact, I usepure Tung oil to seal my shafts. First layer 50/50 Tung Oil and turpentine (not to be confused with white spirit) second layer with 100% tung-oil. Works great. The place where I glue my fletching is lacquered first (dipped) because oil and glue don't go together!

Thanks. The reason I want to use the stain is to get the shafts black. Maybe the Danish oil won't be the best material to seal with. I may look for other options.

Owlbait,

I am not familiar with the specific stain you mention. I use the Minwax stains. I have started using the Minwax water-based poly to seal all my arrows now. I spray on a cap-dip with Enamal paint and stain the lower part of the shaft. I have had very good results with this and no problems with feathers adhereing.

Here is a photo of some I have used a dark stain on and the water based poly in a homemade dip tube.
