Title: Compressed Maple....
Post by: Terry Green on July 08, 2010, 09:38:00 AM
1st off...It sure is nice seeing wood arrow topics lately.

Anyhow....I had some compressed maples a few years ago that weighted around 700 and were tuffer than nail.  Tuffest wood arrow I ever shot.

Anyone know if/where to get compressed maple shafting?

Dinks Feather shop has Tapered Laminated Maple shafts if you can't find any compressed shafts.

I would ask Twig Archery and Allegheny Mountain Arrow Woods...odds are they aren't going to be compressed, however. Honestly, I think you're going to have a tough time beating a good Surewood Douglas Fir arrow for good mass weight, toughness, and consistency. I can easily go over 700 grains in most spines and the heavy spines are readily available.

Terry:  I believe Allegheny mountain arrow woods produces maple shafts.  BTW, I've never heard of compressed maple.  It's plenty strong and heavy without compressing it.  Not compressed, a 11/32 shaft would weigh 550-600 grains, plus, before feathers, finish, nock and point.  Most will make up into an arrow of 700-750 grains minimum, unless they're shortened a lot. Have never tried laminated maple.

I tried some maple shafts, that Tim Cosgrove, of Kustom King, gave me back in'93. They were tough and straight, no doubt.

Like most shaft alternatives at the time, the supply didn't last.

Ramin, was the best hardwood that I have shot. But it also stopped! I did buy up quite a few though.

I believe we "natural shaft" shooters, will always be chaising our tails!

I rememember when Blackwidow was scrambling to find an alternative to there maple supply. Japan was buying all of our good Northwest woods, Cedar in particular. And harvesting Yew was being limited because of the Cancer drug!

Who has the most MONEY?

I'm betting on Bamboo and Cane right now! Renewable, tough, tapered and did I say TOUGH?

Try some!   :goldtooth:
