God permitting, this november I will be 50 years old and no I am not going through a mid-life crisis; I am very thankful to be where I am at BUT there are so many things I want to do as far as bowhunting is concerned; I want to go far north and hunt moose, west to hunt elk and mule deer, and kill a grand slam of turkeys with my bow; the main reason that I having a hard time to accomplish these dreams is of course ..money :( ...and with the economy the way it is it is hard to set aside enough to go on these hunts;
But if for some reason that I can't go I will be more than happy to hunt deer and turkey where ever I am; life passes by so fast and the years seems to have a way of "sneaking" up real quick; anyways, just food for thought for some of you "youngins'" out there, go for your dreams, don't let ANYONE say ..you can't..and NEVER GIVE UP!!
God bless all............. :campfire:
I can relate to that. turned 53 in June
Me too,hit the double nickle yesterday-phew glad thats over with.
50's are the new 30's
I've been planning my midlife crisis for years. I'm starting the countdown in a couple years at 45. I got 7 years to save for that Harley, pay off the house, get a shack in the woods and learn to live off kibble. I am SO looking forward to it. Congrats on making it. Now get busy on that "crisis"
It's all down hill after that brother :scared: Na just kidding, I'm going to be 51 don't feel any different than when i turned 40, God willing you'll have lots of time to get it done. I think the older you get the more you learn to appreciate things.
This was 16 years ago for me and it keeps getting better. I still have things I want to do, wants that have not been done yet but so is life. When time runs out I will not have too many regrets. MIKE
Just turned 60 and am retired. Best job in the world.
If there is something you really want to do, make a plan and follow thru. Otherwise one day will just run into another.
All the best. Oh by the way... the warranty is over at 50.
JW
Heck, you guys are just pups. Turned 63 the last time around and knock on wood, doing just fine.
You just have to do things in order, #1, take care of and provide for your family. #2, make sure your wife is happy because if she's happy your happy. When it's your time be ready for it, it will come.
I will be 67 this Dec. The more I read the threads on this site the more I realize that this life is just one big candy store. My goals have had a way of morphing into one common thought, keep challenging yourself and learn something new each day, and let the journey be the goal.
50 aint nothing, I turn 60 in November, still in good health and raring to go.
You'll get over it. H
I've been in the 50's for six years. It wasn't/isn't traumatic at all. I do find myself paying a bit more attention to the type of terrain my hunting might get me into. I didn't think about such things in my 30's. Also, I'll wake up sore here and there some mornings and have to think hard about what I did yesterday to cause that? However, my passion for archery is as strong today as when I made the first bow in the 3rd grade and terrorized the local robin population.
Remember, when you turn 50 you have already survived your 50th year! The birthday celebrates having made it another one. I realized this when I turned 30 which bothered me more than 40 or 50. If I make it to 60 that would be just fine but if not, I know where I'm going and I'll better than fine with Him.
52 years old here. I would also love to do a backcountry elk hunt before I pass over. Time sure does fly. Money is my main obsticle also....Good hunting...Dave
I turned 60 a couple weeks ago, If I didn't need to have both knees replaced, I would be feeling pretty good. Hopefully there will be many more years to enjoy Trad hunting.
51 last month and I still feel like a kid when I take the bow out!
I don't scout as much, and I hardly ever use the climber anymore. I can easily decide to go back to bed if it's a little too cold or wet for a morning hunt. I'll have a hang on or two in place for most evenings and ground hunt the rest. I shoot almost every day and hunt groundhogs with a passion all summer long. And I discovered hog hunting at Ray's, quite the affordable excursion and his "ridges" are about 5 feet high! :)
Bifocals, arthritis, bad knee, should lose some weight, but generally not too bad.
My childhood friend died in his sleep yesterday at age 52 from an apparent heart attack. You gotta live every day like it's your last! Hug your kids and grandkids, kiss your wife, and laugh often with your friends. You never know.
I know I am blessed.... I can remember fifty..lol
I stopped having birthdays, now I just celebrate anniversary's of my birthday.
I no longer look at seasons either, my years are now marked into two categories, either the days are getting longer or the days are getting shorter.
You'll be just fine! I am having more fun now than when I was fifty.
Happy 10th anniversary early of your 40th.
God bless,Mudd
Guys in general has a tendency to focus on what they missed or don't have !
Instead of focusing on what is at hand !
I am no exception ,But I have to say at the age of 60 ,I have not missed anything ,God has been good !
Happiness is not found in what you can hang on to, It's found in what holds you .
Carl
happy birthday ! :clapper: :clapper:
I'll be 58 the middle of September. I pretty much do everything I ever did just maybe a little slower. I still love shooting the bow and just being in the woods as much a ever. Try to make the most of every day.
Appreciate every day you can get up from bed and move freely, some can't. I wll be 59 in a month and like others still get there- just a tad slower.Enjoy life and your family, we never know when it will be our time to pass over.
I'll be 64 next month. You can do all the same stuff, just SLOWER. :goldtooth:

I thought the 50s were the new teens?
At least that's what my friends tell me I act like....
"Good Health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die"
Nice to see so many other, umm... "mature" folks on this site!
I turned 50 last month too. Had a heart attack this spring and it's forced me to pay attention to my health for the first time in my life!
I have to say that I've never felt better, so Happy Birthday to you and Shoot Straight!
What my wife tells me "arn't you ever going to grow up".My anwser NOPE!

I know the truth when I read it!!!
Thanks RW!

PS:Historically speaking very few folks have been recorded to have left here alive,I doubt my name will be recorded among theirs.
Turn 62 last month, the goverment is going to buy me a new bow with my first SS check. What a great country.
The spring of 2001 (33 years old) I decided that enough was enough and stopped dreaming about going on bowtrips and started to make them happen.. We talked about how short life was while in a bear camp (my first "big" bowtrip) three weeks after 9-11...
I have worked a 2nd seasonal job to help pay for my trips since 2001. At least two out of state or the USA bowhunts every year since. Canada, all over the US (13 states) next summer to Australia and when I get old to South Africa as I hate to sit in blinds. I'll do this when I get too old to hump mountains...
Hard work makes it happen. Only have two biggies left on my list. To bowhunt South Africa and to chase goats in the "grand canyon" on Hawaii...
Don't wait brothers,, make your dreams happen...
John III
Man you guys are old! :biglaugh: Being just 34, 50 seems so far away. Thanks for the words of wisdom. Now, don't go tellin' my dad that I'm actually listening. It might just let him down. Happy Birthday!
-Jeremy
Don't feel bad, I was saying man I am will be forty this year. My wife said don't worry it's no big deal you turned forty last year.
Dave
I can remember 50, seems like yesterday.
Keep hunting and let someone else worry about time.
When I turned 50 my doctor told me my warrenty was up...Something to think about..
I am 55 and going strong, but am thinking about that warrenty thing..Looking forward to 60 and more hunting though...Work sucks!!!
LOL
hell 50 you just a chicken wait untill ya hit 58 then ya hve somthing to moan about everything starts to fall apart sore bones bad hips bad eyes bad ears and the list goes on. lifes a bitch then ya die.
I can truly relate.... I turned 54 today!
And I'm a blessed man.
Life started over for me at 50. It's a whole new world out there now!
It ain't over 'till it's over...
Your still young...I'll be 58 in August. The key is to stay in the best shape possible, get in some physical exercise and watch your diet.
Past 15 yrs I've been using a High Potency Multi Vitamin, Calcium/Magnesium for bones and Omega3-6 with Flax for heart care. So far no serious health issues...Thank God.
Just remember to take your time when hunting...especially climbing any steep Mtns or dragging out that whitetail....your not 25 anymore! Good luck and belated HBday....
Turned 63 and got a new hip in June. Am looking forward to the Moose season and want to chase a goat before I am done.Slow and steady gets the job done.Enjoying every day is the key. Bob
Right behind you in January. Were did the time go!!!!
Can't remember 50 anymore. Those numbers really don't exist--we just made them up.
November what? :wavey: :archer: I wke up every morning at 4:30. Work out for a half hour take a shower and get ready for work. You have to stay in shape! I do it because there is 450 guys out of work at my Union Hall and 98% are probably younger than me and ready to take my job!
Being on the 50's is a blessing.
I'll be on the same class next year.
Somebody said that .-Our main purpose in life is to be and make others happy.
Make it worth.
Saludos, Paco
I ordered a Blacktail bow to celebrate my 50th birthday 5 years ago. ;)
:archer2:
Ain't nothing but a thing. Give God the praise for another year and keep your broadheads sharp!
Ok..you guys that are braggin can just go order pizza. Time for reality check.
:knothead: :biglaugh:
It's all in your genes...and I'm not talkin Wranglers, brother!
I've had so many things funneling down on me and pushed hard throughout my life to see if I could avoid all the physical crap. It's a crap shoot and it "depends". Hopefully, that ain't a product name looming on the horizon.
First, it depends on how well you keep your body fit. Good health does NOt EQUAL dying slowly. Health is an investment. Guard it wisely!
Second, it depends on your genetics. I went to Uncle Ray's to hunt hogs and between the 13 hrs of riding in a truck and then walking a good bit, I was toast. Knee blew up, hip went south.
I was/am a hurtin unit and I've been back 5 days!
So whatever you want to do, don't delay for this "retirement" crap. Take John3's lead and do it NOW! I didn't and I regret it. Played it safe and tried to do the deligent thing and it dind't work as well as I'd like. Gene pool my tushkis, I got a cesspool!
62 ain't what it was cracked up to be and without health care, the things that can be kinda fixed, don't get done.
I'm fixing to realign my sights and just focus on what I can do and manage my time afield, the amount of exertion and make it work. Still want to get back to Ray's...but then there is the whole economic issue.
Sorry to rant...or crybaby. But geeze guys, everyone is different. Life is to be lived and used up. I regret pushin too hard to prove nothing and now...? Well, things have happened fast that are making me regret some of the pushing hard AND some of the delays that now may never happen.
Get out there! Do it! Do it NOW!
Wish I was 50 again. I turn 60 in November. I hurt in places, but will get out there till I die. I just feel better in the woods.
Jeremy, I was 34 just the other day. Uh-oh, that was 30 years ago, maybe I am developing alzhiemers!
Seriously, don't let life get in the way of the things you love to do. There will ALWAYS be reasons why you "can't" do something. You really can if you plan good enough and work hard enough.
Wayne
I suppose it's good that I can't afford a boat or a Jaguar or a Harley. My midlife crisis only amounted to a couple years of fickle bow-buying and trading.
Hear, hear on the physical shape thing. I'm gonna stay young. My father has all the time he needs but his knees will not let him do much.
Everyone is born with a birthdate, and then we have that long dash in between that and our ending date.
I'm still trying to make the best of the dash.....
Lets see what I can do next.
I reckon it's time to start telling your age in half years...again.
Great statement Cottonwood.
You reminded me of one of the best poems I have heard, called "The Dash". I don't know if this is where you got it from, but everybody should read or hear The Dash by Linda Ellis.
For me, bow hunting with my family and the other people who do it is a big part of my dash.
Warning: This is a corny video. If you don't like them, skip it . . . .

55 and haven't slowed down... at least that I can tell. Still can hump up the big hills out here and chase elk, deer and bear. Life is good! Retiring from the Navy this fall after 30 years and still haven't figured out what I want to do after I grow up... I truly believe 50's are the new 30's....
I'm going to be 50 in August. Not slowing down yet.
Rick
A friend sent me this when I turned 60, 6 years ago.
"Charles, you can't buy 40 again, heck, you can't even buy 50 or 55 again. You can't buy memories of the hunt you didn't take, the trip you turned down with your family or the adventure you declined, the struggle you bypassed,or the excitement you had no eyes to see. These memories are the coins of the spirit. They can make an old man so rich he can truly say that life has just begun for him. Without such memories, he will be desperately poor in spirit. And that form of poverty has no insurance. Your friend."
He did not author this and did not know who did. It is taped to the top of my desk and I read it most every day. Take Heed and HAPPY TRAILS!
Charles
It's time for the red Corvette and a blonde, don't ya think?
I will be 67 this coming year and having the time of my life. At 65 I became a staff shooter for White wolf custom Bows. I shoot 3D and archery exhibitions and enjoying it every day.
Wow it just hit me !!!!!! I just turned 50, eight years ago :biglaugh:
Yer just a young Pup... I turn 60 next year and was feeling like you earlier this spring when I was not sure I could pull off the bear hunt in AK with HOC. This was the "One Dream" I have had my whole life..Right before it was ready to start , I started thinking of giving my spot away. [ My problem was not so much money as it was age and physical condition ]
I did not want to slow anybody down, or hold them back in any manner...I talked with Hogdancer, my friend Curt Yeager and my wife.. They all encouraged me to go. As, I had saved up and paid the hunt off in installments over the previous year and a half...and it's all I had been talking about.
I went, and had the "Time of my Life" was even lucky enough to get a "spot and stalk" Boar with my recurve and a couple nice halibut. [ CJ Lacosta, who had already got his bear, and was one of the youngsters on the trip, did do most of the work getting my bear to a place we could pick it up with the zodiac...I can't thank him enough]
Bottom line is do it !!!...Save up.. and make a dream or two come true. We aren't getting any younger and we won't live forever.
I tell my friends I'm a "teenager with Wrinkles" and just keep going out and trying to "Get er' Done"
Mid-life crisis has hit me hard... before I retired I started "collecting"... I got the Electra-glide, motorhome, boat, quads, camp trailer, a Tundra 4x4 and a beautiful 73 bronco...and even live in the log cabin in the woods on a bit of land of my own.. Believe me, even though it's all mine and paid for.. that stuff dont' mean a thing if you don't get out and use them... I'd trade any or all of it for some youth :wavey:
Gene,
I turned 47, yesturday. I will give you 3 years for that 73 Bronco.
:biglaugh: Matt, thats a good one.... If it was only that easy...she'd be heading your way.
Gene :biglaugh:
I'm just turnin 60 soon and stuff is gettin tougher but last fall I remembered the reason I took all that time teachin boys how to shoot bows and put up deer stands, how to drag deer out of the woods and cut them up. I sure am glad I did that and they seem to be glad too. I'm a very proud dad of two very good men and bowhunters. Family makes the hurts not so bad and I thank God everyday for them!
I turned 50 eight months ago, and subconsciencely what I find myself doing is buying things that will now last me a lifetime rather than cheapo stuff ya usually go through every few years. Things like lawnmowers, weedeaters, treetrimmers, chainsaws and such. Tools and equipment that is suppose to last longer than 20 years, (I'm not doing yard work after 70 though...8^)) Just this past year have bought quality stuff like Gravely, and Stihl. Ten years ago would have never dreamed of paying that kind of money on lawn equipment.
Just the other day I needed a pair of tree pruners, so went to Lowes but rather than price shop and buy a cheap one, I bought the best they had...8^) I'm not buying another one in this life time...8^)
I hit 50 this past May. man does time fly.
Wow ME too
I will turn " 30 " for the 2 nd time !
Carl
I look in the mirror and wonder..... who put that old mans head on my body :help:
Geeeees you young chicks......what are you complaining about???? I am 70 and still kicking around in the bush with my 40# PLX.....just can't put it away!
I'm 58 and do pretty much everything I have in the past, maybe just a little slower and enjoy them more.
I will also be turning 50 in November and I'm treating myself to a spring bear hunt next June. BTW, I'm 17 days older than you if it makes you feel any younger!
Just turned 61 beginning of july...despite lots of orthopedic problems I still try to "Git 'er done" as much as possible...
What's the alternative?...bloated couch potato?...no thanks
I too will be 50 in Nov.
Ill be 50 on the 30th. YEEHA!
I always saw 40 as a "destination". When the bus blew right on past that stop I thought, "No, wait!!!"... I hit 52 a few weeks ago... I'm not sure what happened.
I guess I hit mid life crisis early, 43 I bought a new Harley road king, firefly bow and an AR-15 to protect them! The wife said that enough toys for now.
Larry
50 in June for me. God has blessed me and I give him all the praise. I can walk most young fellers down in the swamp.RC
Having birthdays sure beats not having them!
50 aint nothing boy i turn 58 on the 9th of this month :biglaugh:
Here is a line from a song that I've always liked that may pertain to this, " But don't feel bad...Cause I... never feared consequences, hate regrets more than apologies... "
I remember when I turned 50....that was back in the fall of '93. Waited 8 more years to get my Harley, been to 26 states on her including the all of Route 66 (Illinois to California). God willing, I'll turn 67 this fall and still enjoy riding and shooting the longbow.
Wait til you hit 60. I just had my 60th on July 28. It is hard for me to imagine myself being 60 but I really don't feel much different. Actually now I could care less about lots of the trivial crap most folks worry about...and that is a good thing! d;^)
Seems like 50 is coming up quick..47 now stay fit, work hard enjoy everyday like it is you last..
I hate growing old. I will be 50 in January, look 70 and feel 100 every morning when I wake up. Need some of them miracle pills them stars take to make them look and feel younger.
50 + 6 years, here. Not much has changed, just a little different outlook is all. What's that song "I ain't as good as I once was, but I'm as good once, as I ever was!"
My "crisis" consisted of buying a Mustang in '08. Friends and the experiance seem to take more priority over the kill, anymore. Still able to do, pretty much, what I want to. I just do it a little slower, now and enjoy it a lot more.
LD

50 in Sept

oh to be 50 agean or even 60 but i have just as much fun as i did then.wife says im her favorite kid loyd
I hit it in 12 more days, alot more hunts left in me, if I only knew at 20 what I know now.
50 is good 60 is better cant wait for 65! The trees get a little taller and the hills a little bigger but just take your time.
I turned 61 last spring. When I was in my 50s, it irritated me that youngsters didn't show any respect. Now that I am in my 60s, I don't care if they do or don't. Smiley face inserted here. I too, as others have said, do the same things as I have always done, only slower and maybe not as much of it. Ya gotta keep moving. It's better to be seen than viewed.
The same thought hit me 6 years ago,Good Luck,
Kurt
At one time i was making more money than i ever thought i would and i was going on at least one paid hunt every fall.
After just going through a very costly divorce its going to be a couple of years before i can go on some of those hunts i have been dreaming about.
By the way im 42 yrs old and i have basically lost everything so my advice to you younger guys. Go on those hunts you dream about because the dream can turn into a nightmare before you even know what hit you.
Hang in there. I never went on my first high elevation Colorado elk hunt until I was 53. Fred Bear once reminded me that virtually all of his most famous hunts occurred WELL AFTER he turned 50!! I always remembered that!!!
Age is a number. LIve today like it's your last.
