Title: Eliminating leather odor
Post by: TSchirm on July 01, 2010, 11:34:00 PM
I was wondering if anyone can give me some ideas on how to eliminate or drastically reduce the smell of leather.  I made a side quiver similar to the Arrowmaster, but the leather has quite an odor like the tanning chemicals or processing oils or something.  Of course I will play the wind etc, but want to reduce odors as much as possible.  Any suggestions?

You might try storing your quiver in a bag or box of cedar shavings or fresh cut cedar wood.  You can stuff it full of cedar chips periodically as well.

Baking Soda should help eliminate it.

don't use leather.

or maybe   :bigsmyl:   see if they make an activated carbon scent eliminator wrap to put it in.  They eliminate all odors you know.    :bigsmyl:

As stated play the wind and don't worry about the smell to much.  It will dwindle over a few rain showers and some sunshine on the leather.  You smell a lot worse to the animals than your leather does.  If they smell it they smell you and the jig is up.

Fresh air and a little sunshine will do as much as can be done.  (Not too much sun, as it can be hard on the leather)

Using the wind is the best way.

Montana pitch blend seems to be popular, but will it get rid of the smell, or will the leather smell like Montana pitch blend?

Hunt with it, the smell of leather is the last thing that will alarm a deer, they will smell you long before the leather bothers them.

well i dont know if its the lasst thing . if they learn to assosiate that smell with hunters than it will give them a heads up as well " if we can smell it they can smell it from farrrrr away (downwind that is). o once knew a guy who used two stroke oil as coversent where he hunted was on public land that was regularly cut grass and the smell was a normal thing for them and not a threat. it worked well for him.

If they get down wind of you they will smell you sooner or later, they make their living with that nose of theirs. You can use all the cover scent you want and scent eliminator but they still will wind you if they get down wind.
