Title: 4- Fletch Question
Post by: granny on June 29, 2010, 02:35:00 PM
What size feather would you recommend for an  arrow fletched with 4 feathers? 4 " ok or should I use 5" feathers.

I have some of both, the 4" seem to be best unless you just like a better vision of the arrow flying in the air.

If the 4" does not give you good flight, something else like spine, tuning, or form is probably not quite right.

Great flight with the 4", plus you can usually chop 2 of these out of a full length feather.

4" feathers fly great for me using the four fletch arrows.
The only time I use 5" feathers is a 3 fletch setup.

5" feathers in a 4 fletch design is going to give you more drag and stability of the arrow. If they are spined right 4" is all you will need

4 - 4 inch fletch have the same surface area as 3 - 5 inch fletch.  You will get identical arrow flight from both set ups.

Not too experienced in this but know the "standard" for years was 3x5" feathers...that's 15" of feathers.

I LOVE 4-fletch, and I use 4" feathers...that's 16" of feathers.

There's a WHOLE lot more that goes into figuring out how much drag the fletches create..but that's the quick and dirty of it. (and the part us mortals can understand.)

Now that I think about I don't think I ever used 5"...even with 3-fletch.

four fletch only, for me - 4" banana cut, 75x105 straight with slight offset fletching.

high back for woodies ...

Rob, what do you use to cut your feathers: burner/chopper? Thanks.

God bless,

José

I have switched to 4 fletch with 4" feathers from 3 with 5". Shooting the same arrow side by side with these different fletchings I get NO difference in arrow flight. So I stay with the 4 fletch, stalking animals on the ground you never have to take your eye off the animal to nock your arrow (no more odd feather in/out)

I like 4" because I get good flight with them but also I can chop two 4" out of one full length feather.

Thanks for your input. I have fletched a batch of arrows with four 4" feathers and they fly great.
