I'm interested in how many of us longbow / recurve shooters also wear neck knives while hunting. Do they get in the way? Do you wear them tucked in? What kind of neck knife do you wear?
That stuff. :)

i wear one. i usually have my binoculars on top with a harness. Sometimes i tuck it in, sometimes i don't. i've never had it get in the way.
Jim,
Oldskool wears one while hunting and has it tucked in between his undershirt and outter hunting wear. Rob never had a problem with it that I know of. He bought his from Fred Asbell.
Hope you are doing well,
Rastaman,
Sweet knife and sheath! Love the handle on that knife.
I wear mine on the out,so I can get at it easy and quick, but if i'm hunting out of a ladder stand,i tuck it in under a shirt!

This one I made out of a old file blade!!
Charlie, that's a "Tippit" knife that i was able to trade Doc out of. The sheath was made by a lady by the name of Rebecca Parker who Tippit hooked me up with. She does beautiful quill work. Her & her husband used to be sponsors here, but i can't remember the name of their company.
WHat advantage does a "neck knife" have over a belt knife?
I carry a BRKT neck knife but I wear it on my belt. I like the small utility type knife but I do not like a knife dangling off my neck. The only advantage I would give them is concealability.
Just started wear'n one .Keep it outside till I get active ,then tuck it in under my wool shirt or sweater!
 I Like the Neck Knives Made from 2 Blade Zwickeys and a Bone Handle!! Nice and Compact, and Will Cut Whatever You Choose!!
Besides That..... YOU Can Make It Yourself!! :archer:
I thought they would get in the way, too. I'm a female-type and we stick out a little more than some guys, so I am not all that eager to add to the bulk in that area. Binocular harness? No way, binoculars go under an armpit. I don't want any impedance to a bowstring and a broadhead, especially if there is a deer watching. They get too many giggles offa me already.
Then Robin made me this knife. Only thing I could come up with was to wear it as a necker. I wore it all last hunting season, only took it off for showers.

It did all kinds of chores around camp and in the woods, butchered a bear that ApplePie dragged into camp. It was handier than my Kershaw Leek, which always rides at the lip of my right front pocket. I never wear a belt knife, 'cause I seldom wear a belt. I'll wear this one though. The more clothing the weather makes me wear, the better I like this knife, easy access is worth a fortune when you need something sharp!
Man, I hated taking it off when I came home from the woods. Post Office would take a dim view of my wearing it to work, though. :(

I will have a neck knife I've seen too many that I have wanted, not to have one. I have seen a few designs I like. I am still tempted to finish building one also.
Great looking knives! Thanks for the responses too - good info, folks. I just got this Becker BK-11 for Fathers Day and hope to get it nice and bloody this season. :D

... and I hope to avoid letting it interact with my release - ack!
Charlie - doing great thanks - you?
I use this little french knife.

Personally I like a neck knife just because they're so handy. Always close at hand no mater what position you're in.
I have several that are made by various makers but this past weekend I carried a prototype "Shrew" knife in a neck sheath for two days while fishing,(including cleaning the fish), cooking, and doing all kinds of chores from peeling potatoes to cutting the meat on my plate.
C L Matteo the blacksmith who makes my Shrew Hawks and I have been working on a design for a neck knife, It'll be about 6 3/4" OA and will be called the "Shrew Tooth"
I know a neck knife isn't for everyone so we're also going to have a skinner blade about 7 3/4" OA in a belt sheath.

Jeremy made this one for me a couple of years ago.
Goes everywhere with me.

Cool, Ron!
Remember Sabu, as Mowgli in The Jungle Book, raising high his knife and gazing joyfully upon it?
He crowed, "I have a tooth!"
We say that a lot around the house, anyway.
(We are well-armed.)

I carry mine tucked in my shirt unless around camp. I too have a Becker Necker that I like. I just recently bought one from Asbell that is a dandy and will go with me this year. Neck knives are just plain kewl ;)

Yes, I remember...that's where the idea for the name came from... :D
I usually have several good sharp knives at camp and carry one for field dressing. Never tried a neck knife before but like an old hunter once told me a good sharp pocket knife will clean anything you want. He told me this because he thought I was nuts for bringing so many knifes to camp each year. Well guess he was right because he only used that one good sharp pocket knife(old original Buck I believe)and never needed another. He did have a steel to keep it going if he was skinning alot of game for people.
I've worn one for years while hunting.

I like the looks of that and flat out love my Shrew Hawk. My plan for the season (and for backpacking, camping, etc.) is to carry the Shrew Hawk, necker and a Swiss Army. That ought to be adequate edged goodness to cover the vast majority of my cutting needs. :D
Just got me a mini GFA that really seems to fit with a variety of activities. Used it the workshop and around the home. Always seem to need a knife, and now I don't need to pack a pocket knife any more.
I cant stand heavy items around my neck,My Steadfast or k-bar on the hip or pack is all I need. And my Kershaw scallion on my pocket.
Here's mine, an AG Russell that is less than $30. It does everything, big game, small game, fish, turkeys. My wife liked it so much I had to get her one...she even uses it in the kitchen. Takes and holds a razor edge. I wear it under my shirt whenever I am in the out doors. Never is a problem when shooting my bow.

Ron... that fish you're poking.
Is that a crappie?
I see the sunfish (what a beautiful thing!), and it looks like two crappies.
You might want another kind of fish for your ad campaign. Just thinkin'.

Two of them are Speckled Bass (crappie)..they're fun to catch on a fly rod but not as good eating as Sunfish or Bluegills.
What kind of fish should I use?.... :dunno:
Some thing a little bigger Ron. Those fish in your picture make your knife look way too big to carry around my neck :D
I have a Skullworks necker (Dalmation Ebony & Ziricote to match my Buffalo bow) that Clarence made for me in a trade. It also has a flip away portion with belt slots that I can use. I bought some braided elastic from Walmart in the sewing department and got a good snug fit so the knife wouldn't interfere with the string but still easily stretches over my head. I'm really loving it so far! I'll try to get some pics posted although I'm a little embarassed of my sewing job on the elastic band. :o

I need to get some pics of this knife with my bow sometime.
I think a chain pickerel would do it, or any one of those muskellunge-y pike family fish.
I would rather buy a pike poker than a crappie knife. ;)
Actually, some of the best eating I ever had was a huge crappie I caught one year at Lake Anna. I wonder if the nuclear plant had something to do with that...

I've had a Cold Steel bird and trout knife for quite a while but I've never been able to warm up to it. I have a Puma folder that's more to my liking for every day stuff. Maybe it's that cold steel neck chain that gets to me? Now you got me to thinkin?????
Fred Asbell had a neck knife article in the 20th Anniversary issue of Trad Bowhunter (Oct/Nov 2009). That was my first intro to these unique knives. Most who have them, love them, it seems. I'm getting one for around the farm , daily life and hunting, of course. So easy to get to.
Funnily enough Mr. Asbell took some heat in the next issue from someone that thought an article on knives had no place in an archery mag....
Mr. LaClair, I'd suggest a couple of male Speckled Trout in fall breeding colour for a knife ad. They are spectacular.
Nice lookin' knife Kenneth...
Thanks Joe! I can't wait to get it bloody this fall!
