Title: "Daddy, I'm having the time of my life!"
Post by: Guru on June 27, 2010, 03:02:00 PM
That's from Cade, thanx to good friend Terry Receveur "Indianabowman"

This was a couple years in the making. At the JLMBH 2 winters ago, Terry invited us to join him "whenever".

Well for some reason I couldn't bring myself to go without Cade(I wanted him to be ready to shoot). So I waited....

A couple weeks ago, as many have read, I couldn't hold him back anymore...he became an "official bowfisherman"!

http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=090056#000000

His equipment is still a little heavy for him, and getting the barb into the fish is still a problem. It's a struggle between poundage and draw length(and of course the urge to snap shoot)...but boy is he having fun!

So anyway, when I got a hold of Terry about a week ago about coming up, he went "above and beyond" and set us up to go out with his buddy Bob. Captain of "Carp-a-geddon".....(Terry's got good pix of the boat I believe)

We got to the boat landing a little early, Cade was excited beyond belief...so was I!

Soon enough this awesome rig showed up. It would be Terry, Terry's son Tyler, Capt. Bob, Cade, and myself.

Cade had some great guidance. Capt. Bob and Terry are both way more experienced than me with this type of bowfishing. Both were very eager to help him in any way possible.

The action quickly heated up!

I gotta go mow my lawn and then pick up my pooch at the groomer....so Terry please take over buddy....Like Arnold said...."I'll be back"....

I hear Bill Dunn has a bowfishing bow. Cade should've borrowed that. Knowing Bill, I'm sure it was several pounds lighter than Cade was shooting  :bigsmyl:  That is a BIG scale from a BIG fish. This could get good.

We set up the time to meet at the boat ramp at 8:30 PM. After a phone conversation with Curt and the statement that they would be heading for the ramp at 6:30 PM. I knew they would have an early arrival. My son Tyler and I decided to leave a little early and meet up with Bob so we could arrive a early as well. Sure enough about 8:10 PM I get a call that they are at the ramp.  I think Curt did a fantastic job reigning Cade in that much.  We were only 5 minutes away.  We pulled down to the ramp and there is Curt and Cade sitting on the bed of their truck waiting to go.  We pulled over to the ramp and along came Cade. It only took a minute for Cade to climb aboard Carp-ageddon! We took a couple quick photos and loaded up the boat.  However, there was one last thing we had to do before we launched for the night. The "Carp Jig" had to be performed to call all the carp.  Tyler, Cade, Curt, and I all lined up and did a quick "Sprinkler" move, followed by the "Swim", and finished off with a dying carp quiver whoop, whoop, hip shimmy!  I will say that Curt was very kind and did not record the "Jig" for posterities sake. Thank goodness. Seeing a fat, balding, old guy doing the "Carp Jig" is not a pretty sight. However, it worked like magic!

Something like that would be a great way to make money for charity of course, I am sure there are many who would pay to see that.

Glad you had a good time.

"The carp jig"....how could I forget to mention that!  Terry lightened things up for Cade right off with that one.  You should have seen the smile on his face...priceless!

Give me a bit and I'll be back with more pix and stories.

Hey Terry, Please re-size your pix bud no wider than 640 pixels, or else I'll get in trouble with my other friend Terry     :biglaugh:      :dunno:

Cade got off the first few shots, and as you could see, it wasn't long before he came up with scales!

It wouldn't be the last time either....

I made good on the first and second fish I shot at! First one I got in the boat and when I was getting it held for pix, it flopped and flipped itself right back into the water off the shooting platform. I learned to take Capt. Bob's advice to land it on the lower part of the boat off the platform     :notworthy:

He's a chip off the old block I tell ya!

Terry just sat back and helped out as much as possible with Cade and anyone else who needed help. He also used a hand-held spotlight to help spot fish further away from the boat so we could work close to them.

Terry is "The Silent Assassin", Without saying a word, sometimes he'd just put the spotlight between his knees, pick up his bow and make one great shot after another!

For those of you that have never had the chance to hunt with Terry, you may not know this.....

He's without a doubt, one of, if not the, deadliest shots on game I've ever seen.  I've witnessed it.

If he's got a bow in his hand, something is gonna die, plain and simple!

He proved it again last night...even tho we all hit about the same amount of fish last night, I'd bet he did it with half as many shots as the rest of us     :notworthy:

Let me go fetch some pix....

Can't wait to see the rest of this one, the one thing I know for sure is that whoever was on that boat had one heck of a time.

Charlie, You're right about Arnold    ;)

That's the kind of advice I need. We need to figure out how to use the muscle he has now. The bow he's shooting is a tad much for him, but he struggled a bit more shooting down off the platform last night. It's always harder to draw when aiming down.

He's also in such a rush to get the shot off he doesn't fully draw....so that's not helping either.

All that said, he shot extremely well. He made me very proud last night. Not only because he shot well, but he just "handled himself" very well...

I believe Terry's got more pix than I do....

Curt calling me a deadly shot is pretty funny. We all know what he can do! Here's proof of a nice double Curt and Tyler had.

Curt, I do have a lot more really good photos of you and Cade and some pretty nice action shots. I'll need to work on getting them resized. I try to add one more and resize tonight and then I'll have to get the rest up tomorrow.

Cade was just too funny! That boy can put some arrows in the air/water! He'd be shooting at fish about as fast as we could get the arrow retrieved and the water cress cleaned off.  We all held off shooting until Cade shot first and then it was all go. I remember one time when we say a nice fish way on the left side in front and Cade was on the right side. I was thinking that is Curt's fish and no more than a millisecond later Cade had an arrow on the way. He hit it solid and the fish took off with the arrow in tow. Unfortunately all the water weeds would tangle the line and unless you shot through the fish there was a good chance it was coming off.

Curt had made a nice shot on a big fish and after a couple nice photos he tossed it back in the river. Just at the same moment he tossed the fish it flopped and gave Curt a "fish shower"!

Great Guys That's just awesome.  Must have been a riot on that boat with all the belly busting laughs you guys had.

Terry I know you can shoot.  The first time i met you, there was a 30 yard running rabbit through the brush, with your arrow making direct contact. Cant truthfully tell me that one was luck. Even if you did I wouldn't believe it.

And for Curt's shooting?  well he was at that hunt too. I have witnessed 3 of his rabbits headed for the pot.

Thanks for bringing the stories and pics to this E-campfire!   :campfire:

Hey Skippy, did you notice that beautiful neck knife in the photo of Cade and I. I doubt I'll ever hunt without it again.

Here's a nice photo of Curt with his 1st boated fish.  Curt, I added up the photos of different fish you got in the boat and counted 6. Those that pulled off had to bring you up to near a dozen.

This is the first fish Curt shot on his first shot at a fish. I didn't get a good hero photo because as he was removing the salad from his fish it flopped and went over the side.

This is one of my favorite photos!  Cade is a great shot and he hit A LOT of fish. He'd just get so excited and short string the shot. After a while he'd calm down a little and when he pulled all the way back his arrows were great. Good practice for him and I have no doubt he'll be punching holes through the fish in no time.

The action was pretty hot and heavy and I was the designated arrow de-weeder for Cade so I didn't get to shoot too much, which was just fine with me.  However, I did sneak in a shot or two once in a while.  Here is one that swam into my arrow. I'm the handsome one in the middle!

Nice pix Terry!

The weather was a toss up all day. We were all hoping it would hold up, but for most of the day it looked terrible. It ended up being an absolutely beautiful full moon night...
•   (http://www.tradgang.com/upload/curt/P1070820crpagdn.JPG)

Like Terry said the first couple hours were about non stop...I don't think there was a more than a couple minutes that someone wasn't shooting. Most of the time it if was far less than that, sometimes multiple shots at once.

Terry prepared us for a fun night, but this was way more than Cade or I could have expected!

The plan was for Cade to fight any fish that I shot. But that went right out the window when he started getting so many shots. He wanted to shoot his own!!

He did very well and as far as we could remember, he hit at least 4 fish well enough to come back with scales on his Muzzy point...he really was having the time of his life!

This was Cade's first time on a boat besides a canoe. He really didn't know what to expect, and I could tell he was a bit apprehensive when we got on the big boat. But it wasn't long before he was very comfortable and loving every second of it!

In the end, about 12:45am, he didn't want to get off the boat and stayed on as long as he could helping Capt. Bob as much as possible...

Terry buddy, thank you so much for enriching a little boys(and his old man's) life with an experience he'll(we'll) never forget!

We rolled in the driveway about 1:30, and after quick showers were in bed around 2:00am. We were both tired and sleep came very easy.

Terry, I try to spend as much time with Cade around "good people"...if I can do half as good a job raising my kids as you've done with yours, then I'll have really accomplished something! Thank you brother, for everything!     :notworthy:

Great story, thanks for sharing it with us.
Curt, I know what you mean about Terry and his shooting. Im reluctant to go bowfishing with him though...after "superman dives" on a rabbit for him on EVERY hunt, I can just imagine his disappointment at my refusal to do the same into the mighty Hudson for a carp. Head shots Terry, head shots.

I loved the pics. Cade is growing up so much in the few years I have known him. Great stuff guys.

Curt it was my pleasure my friend. Cade is developing into great young man and hunter. You're putting the time in with him and that is what matters. Being a dad is a wonderful thing. In the spirit of full disclosure I must admit that I too believe I have great kids, but have to give the credit where credit is due.  I married way above my station in life and Tina gets all the credit for our great kids.  The only bad part of me marrying up is that Tina had to marry way down!    :knothead:

Jamie, you're absolved of any carp diving because when I shoot them I have a string attached. So, you've free to tag along without apprehension at anytime.

David/Hunter, Skippy, Jamie, Izzy, Charlie, Curt, Cade, or whomever wants to go out and try for some fish, my boat has all the batteries charged and is ready to go.  Capt. Bob is on vacation for a couple weeks and I have him set up for a "ladies night" when he gets back. I'm taking my 2 daughters, my wife, and a young lady from Church.  This should be a hoot!  After that though, I bet we can get him scheduled for a TradGang "Carp-A-Palooza"!

Guys, give me a buzz. I'm already itching to shoot at some fish!

So there ya have it buddy, we're ready whenever you are! Let me know....

Terry glad that replacement arrow was able to get dirty.  I hope it was close enough like the one I lost of yours.

I will not be able to drive this week, turns out the whole thing was the DMV's fault but will still take a week to clear up and a court date in which I may still receive a "processing fee" dependent on the judges mood.

Curt, the New Paltz golf course is loaded. You can get both frogs and carp   :readit:    :knothead:

This thread was great.  Thank you for sharing.  I would agree you guys have great kids. At least the ones I have met. IThey take after great Guys (and if you are telling the truth great moms too).

I have found a Bayou filled with Frogs Turtles and saw a few carp and bass. Anyone that wants to go with me let me know. Its about a mile from my house.  I could only see 4 carp in there but it sounded like the frogs can keep you busy for hours.

When a kid gets the investment of a parents time, as in a case like this, it is a victory for us all!

Curt, I'm good to go any night during the week. It actually works pretty good. Usually go out and bowfish from about 9 PM - 1 AM and then get home, clean up, get some sleep and in the office by 7 AM.  Doesn't take away any time from momma and the other kids.  Friday or Saturday works too.

Send him on! We'll keep him busy.  We have a pool, groundhogs, and about 700 acres behind the house. Fishing close by and we do get out and shoot at a few fish.  Can he mow a lawn?   :D
