Title: Bear poop and bear size?
Post by: Hopewell Tom on June 27, 2010, 02:30:00 PM
I work in the woods, so most days involve some sort of wildlife encounter. Sitting in the truck for a bite of lunch last week this little fella(maybe 125lbs?) came out and was halfway across the road before I remembered the camera was in the glove box. Sorry for the poor quality, but a rush job and through the windshield to boot. I'm wondering, is he finding much to eat?
A few days later in the woods, I find these two piles of poop, enough to fill a dinner plate. One beside the saw the other 6' away (seen above the hardhat in the 2nd pic.)
Did that little guy lay those down or are we looking at the sign of a much bigger bear? A friend says poop is not a good indication of size as after Christmas dinner his would look like a 6'5', 300lb man whereas he stands 5'7" maybe 160lb. Good point I'm thinking, but there can't be a whole lot for the bear to eat right now, but maybe.
What do you think?
Regardless I'll be in a tree stand over a bait pile(only legal way here in Nova Scotia) in this area this fall. We own this land, so no problem with access.

all I can say is I have scratched my head a few times when I help my 4 year old when he is done using the bathroom.  I thought King Kong payed him a visit.

If you had to use that chainsaw to cut it, it was plenty big. Some of that looks like it has some girth, I'd guess bigger, but in any case, if you hunt in the fall he will put on some weight by then anyway!

Generally, I  have always been told and have been under the assumption that the bigger the poop the bigger the bear. The poop in your photo does not compare is size to some really big droppings I have seen...so, perhaps the bear you saw is responsible.

It is sometimes tough to tell, depending on time of year and what they are eating. When they first start making piles after hibernation, the piles are smaller and increase in size later.

The amount of stuff may or may not tell you something about size but if it is fim enough that part of it is formed in a cylinder, that diameter can give you a fair indication if he is small, medium or large.2" diameter is big. That looks like from a big bear to me.

Yep, if you see coke can cylinders, he's a big fella.

Berries make it real hard as it is usually piled like a cow patty.

Early season out here in Kalistan the berries are everywhere and in places where they are ripe, you can't tell cub poop from a monster boar because of it.

But it congregates them...

On Admiralty Island in Alaska, I've seen piles of crap that looked liked someone dumped out a 5 gallon bucket. Those were brown bear, of course. Big uns, too.

2 years ago there was a "coke can" bear here. I wasn't in the area last year, but sat a stand in the fall of 2008 where a small one came in so I didn't shoot. But the trail cam had a big guy in at the bait and about 1/2 mile to the north on a logging road - "coke cans".

         My son must be hangin with Bigfoot he to stop the hopper without a problem.
I would look to see what is in the poop to see what they are eating and work from that as to placing the stand.

I'm no scientist, but isn't the size of the poop pretty much related to the size of the, well, nevermind.  Just hunt the bears and not the poop and you'll be able to tell if you have a big one.

In the spring when they "blow the plug", it looks similar to that pile.

Isn't it great what we get to talk about when the wife isn't around?

Those bells must be hard to digest...but oh so tempting with the pepper "seasoning".
Thanks for the comments, my Bear education has improved.
