Yesterday, I spent a very relaxing day in Grayling, MI at the Michigan Traditional Bowhunters Jamboree. It was nice to be able to shoot so much and catch up with some great friends.
I was fortunate to win a Northern Mist Longbow of my choice that was generously donated by Steve Turay! I would like publicly thank Steve and all of the other vendors/folks who unselfishly donate so many nice items to a great cause.
So, for you Northern Mist Longbow fans...what longbow would you recommend?
I would recommend a Baraga, a smooth drawing, quiet shooting bow 62" or 64" long. The 3 pice takedown Witbeck is even more smoother and what a shooter.
All Steve's bows are winners. I would probably go with a 66" Superior or a 68" Shelton.
I brought home one of Steve's back quivers yesterday, very nice piece.
Eric
Hey Bryan
Here's thought.. I'll trade you a bow already made for your wait and bow...lol
Congratulations! I think you'll find it's one that won't get as much bow rack time as a lot of others.
God bless,Mudd
If you want a smooth, quiet bow, go with the whisper with a slight pistol grip. I have several of Steve's bow and that one is my favorite.
Congrads.
I have a 64" Superior and it is VERY smooth and quiet!!! Oh and it's pretty darned fast too!
I have a 62" Superior that is the smoothest bow I own. Dished grip 52# @ 29" and just a joy to shoot!
I haven't shot one lately but the Whisper sure looks like a shooter.
Thanks for the input guys! I did some "research" on his website this morning...choices, choices!
Whisper is my choice but all his bows are sweet.

Congratulations on winning a fine bow. Steve Turay is a great representative for the traditional community. I have owned Baraga's, a Whisper, a Superior, and I now have a Shelton coming.
My advice to you would be to simply call Steve and discuss what you like in a bow. Maybe he will be attending a shoot near you where you could try some out. They are all fine bows it's just in what you like.
Better yet, go visit the UP and see for yourself.
Yes, the Northern Mist bow raffle was a nail biter but it couldn't of been won by a nicer guy or a bigger fan of traditional bowhunting! I know you'll enjoy it!
I'd say get something completely different than anything currently on your rack. Have fun with it!
Jim
Probably a Baraga in 62 inches, tempered bamboo core, with myrtle veneers, walnut handle with a connexion hinge. Flint
My "Ole" My !! Where do I start !! Good Luck Bryan !!!
Thanks for the kind words Jim and as always, it was good to see you again!
Flint - is that the bow you have?
I appreciate all of your input guys...
Bryan ya lucky fella ...
Mate a "Shelton" is a fine fine bow "
good luck and let us know what you choose !!!!
Ben
i am trading for a whisper tommorow. hopefully i will get to shoot it alot tommorow and i will tell u what i think.
Congrats Bryan! I had to leave around 4 and I missed seeing you. I have shot most of Steve's bows at one time or another and since I am more of a recurve guy the Baraga was my favorite. It has a bit more of a locator grip. Every one I have shot has been extremely quiet too.
Dave
Eric Westbrook is the best expert on Northern Mist bows. I have owned Baraga, Whisper, classic, shelton, they are all top notch. Talk to Steve with your bow desires and he will guide you congratulations, and good luck Jerry.
My second choice would be the Superior, i had one, but it got to heavy for my bad back and shoulder. I have been looking for one in a lower weight a long time. The Superior is close to the Classic in limb design, a smooth, quiet shooting bow.
Baraga...
Brain, Congrats on the bow. My choice is the Whisper. I had one and kick myself for getting rid of it. I really like the new Whispers with the locator grip. That would be my choice.
Picked up my Baraga that I ordered in K'zoo at Compton's and absolutely love it...
I'm supposed to have a 66" Superior waiting for me at the GLLI in august, Boo limbs and Walnut trim, about #60 @ 30", should be a real dandy.
Superior is pretty much the same as a Baraga, just longer. Baraga is 60-64", Superior is 64-69"
Eric
I just picked up my bow from him the other day. Lightly stained curly maple veneers with a bacote riser and tip overlays...someone was trying to buy it when I walked up to pick it up. It is 68" and 50@28 Classic. The thing rocks! Super quiet and so nice to shoot. Of course beautiful as well. The finish he puts on his bows makes them feel like silk. Very nice bows. If I could shoot them I would love to have a whisper too. They are so accurate it is silly. I just have trouble locating my hand properly on the first shot.
I would pick any of them, they are all beautiful and great shooters. That is one tough choice. Good luck and congrats.
Have two Baragas and will have a Shelton in the near future.I will also buy a Baraga for my son. Steve is top notch.
Steve makes a great bow. I had a 64" Superior and sadly enough sold it. Last year at Compton's I shot one of his Shelton's and really liked the way it shot and felt, that will probably be my next bow purchase.
Bryan, no I do not but when I order one that is what I may get on it. If you like the choices of it go for it and post some pictures when you get it. Congrats Flint
Just picked up my new "to me" whisper today. shot it a couple arrows. what can i say about this bow. i freakin love it. when i say a couple arrows i really mean a couple hours. very nice. and like was said before the finish is really nice. my whisper has a locator grip, and i like it alot.
Thanks for all the input guys...it's crystal clear to me now :)
The good news is I can't go wrong regardless of my choice.
I'll let you know what I decide.
Bryan, dont know if you got to shoot Steve's bows in Grayling or not, but if you can hold off your decision about a month he will be at the GLLI in Hastings the first weekend in August and you could shoot a bunch of them to help in your decision.
Eric
Agreed Eric. The Baraga and the Superior are for more higher wrist shooters and so it is a good idea to see what shoots for you.
Another cool thing is that Steve is always donating bows either for events or auctions. He gives a lot back to the archery community. He is also a fountain of information about Hill style bows.
Love my Baraga but certainly don't think of it as a high wrist shooter unless you happen to hold it that way. I'm pretty certain he'll make them in any grip your request. Steve provides excellent service.
Good idea Eric...I have the GLLI on my calendar. The Baraga is starting to draw me in...

You can say that again Matt!
Smokes right, Steve will put any grip you want on it. Stright Hill, dished, locator...
Hey Bryan.
I'll bring my Barraga to the GLLI and you can shoot it all day if you want to get a real feel for it. C ya. Jim
Best Hill style longbows made. Northern Mist.
Jim - Is that what you shot that big buck with?
Bryan
Yes it was. It's a very nice bow. You can't beat Steve or his bows.
I own a Shelton and I ordered one for my wife. I tried to win that bow for her at the Jamboree, but no luck again. I would go with a Classic or Shelton. Howard Hill knew what he was talking about with those longbows and so does Steve.
