Title: Stu's spine calculator and center cut
Post by: boog21 on June 23, 2010, 09:48:00 PM
I shoot a Bob Lee Signature and have discovered through the search feature that it's cut "3/16 past center."  On Stu Miller's spine calculator, should I enter "3/16" or "-3/16" under "Shelf Location Center Cut"?

I'm thinking it should be "-3/16," but I might be confused.

You need too account for your side plate thickness  , if you have a 1/16 sideplate, then go -1/8th

My Blacktail recurves are cut 3/16" past center. I tried -0.1875 and it was way off. I then tried +0.1875 and it gave me the right arrow. I think what's confusing about past center has more to do with whether you're looking at the front of the bow or the back of the bow.

We cut past center to account for the side rest.

With the thickness of a typical side rest, it should be dead center.

If you download the instruction PDF file it states:

"Instruction #12 - Strike Plate Location:

Select from the dropdown menu the location of your strike plate (side surface where the arrow touches).  Measure your actual bow's strike plate SURFACE relative to the string when centered on the limbs.

Ex: True center position is = 0,  + 1/8" would be less than centercut (strike plate surface is outside of string centerline), and - 1/8" would be cut past center (strike plate surface is inside of the string centerline).

The instructions even show a diagram in which you would be looking at the belly of the bow to determine the strike plate location..

Good luck

Thanks for the input everyone - especially BLA.  It's nice to get things straight from the source!
