Title: A couple of questions on string building
Post by: Avid Archer on June 23, 2010, 04:07:00 PM
I'm going to try to build a few strings for myself, but need a couple of questions answered. I plan to use FF+ and either crown or halo serving. I also want to build my string to fit my X nocks. My bows range in draw weight from 50 to 57 pounds.

First, whats the minimum number of strands that can be saftley used for the end loops?

Second, what is your favored serving material, and why?

Thanks,
Dave

14 strands of 8125 and .030 halo gives a good nock fit for me.

Not sure about minimum strands for loops, I always pads my loops.  I use 22 strands total in my end loops

I prefer halo because they make it in .030, it's tough and its slick on the release.

I don't like minimums.  I'd bet the factory minium is around 18 strands.  I think FF+ is very similar to Formula 8125--if so, I'd use 12 strands for the weights you listed, with the loops padded out with another 6 strands of dacron.

I prefer 62XS.  It's very durable like Halo, but not as apt to slip, especially on smaller diameter strings.

Arvid, with Fast Flight Plus, I would go with 16 strands and #4 nylon serving.

Nylon has been a good ole serving for years! Affordable and durable!

That's what this sport is about, isn't it?

I can't help with the number of strands (I use B-50), but I really like Brownells Braided FF Serving - 0.26. Wears like Fe.

I use either 12 strands of 8125 or 10 of D97..

Most often I double serve with .018

Dave,

Now this might be just me but I shoot X-nocks and I've made a few strings in the last year.  When people ask me what I use for X-nocks and different material and strand counts this is what I recommend.

These are Flemish and not all are for your draw weight but might be helpful in total number of strands and serving for X-nocks.

8 strand of D-97/D-10 = double serve with .018 Braided 62XS
10 strands of D-97/D-10 = Single serve with .030 halo or .030 Diamondback
12 strands of D-97/D-10 = single serve with .024 Halo
14 strands of D-97/D-10 = either single .018 Braided 62XS, .019 or .021 Halo, .022 Diamondback
8 strands of 8125 = .018 braided 62XS with .021 Braided 62XS as the second
10 strands of 8125 = .018 Braided 62XS double
12 strands of 8125 is a gray area but .030 Halo would probably work.
6 strands of 450+ usually double serve with .018 braided 62XS
8 strands of 450+ either .024 halo if you like loose and .030 Halo if you like it a touch snug

Just a thought.
