Title: Where to get cheap feathers?
Post by: marsniper27 on June 22, 2010, 12:11:00 PM
I just ordered a dozen gts from BigJim.

Now i need to get everything to set these arrows up.

I am looking at getting the bohning pro fletcher from 3 rivers and the field point test kit. my question is is it easier to learn/fletch with feathers or vanes? i was also going to use the fletching tape to make this as easy as possible for my first time.

any suggestions are appreciated.

If your shooting trad just start with the feathers vanes will cause flight problems when shooting off a shelf.  If your using a raised plunger type rest you can get away with vanes at times.

I completely forgot about the whole clearance thing so feathers it is.

Where is the cheapest place for feathers? I am on a VERY TIGHT BUDGET and can't afford to spend to much on feathers.

Walk around the local park and look for goose feathers they molted recently and there should be some laying around = free.  Search here and elsewhere on the web on how to strip and fletch with them.  Cheap, fun, and they are waterproof.  That and ask around your area and buddies for turkey hunters.  Some of them will give away their wings.  The feathers make great fletching.

I recently checked with Joe last week and was told he doesn't typically stock alot of full length feathers and was told to look to the bigger catalogs. If you want pre cut then he might have what you need.
