Title: Field points not tapered deep enough
Post by: Wapiti Chaser on June 20, 2010, 05:41:00 PM
I bought a couple dozen 160 grain field points from 3R. Went to put them on today after tapering shafts. The taper in the points isn't deep enough. I have had this happen with others before. Gotta cut an extra 1/4" off the shafts after tapering. Anyone else have this happen ?

Yup happened to me with 2-dozen arrows of different material.I cut a little at a time off so the head fits flush with the top of the taper.

It must be the batch of points. Took some other 160 and they fit perfect without shorting the taper.

It is probably that some are made from a different cast mold.Did you weigh them?

No but that's a good idea.

You're just tapering your points too long.  The taper on most field points is shorter than most broadheads.  Regardless of the point, it's a good idea to measure the depth of the point taper so you can make the appropriate length shaft taper to match.  Easy to do with a sanding taper jig.  Nearly impossible to do consistently accurately  with hand held pencil sharpener taper jigs.

I found the same thing resently. I have a grinder setup that I don't change. But when I got the same 160gr tips from 3Rivers the taper wouldn't fit unless I ground about a 1/4" off the end. The previous tips fit perfect....?

I don't know about the ones you have, but I have seen lighter points have a deeper taper than the heavier ones.

Same thing happened to me!

Yup it's pretty common  ;)  Just cut a bit off your point tapers and you'll be good to go. Make your point tapers a bit shorter from now on and you won't have to worry about it.

I've been snipping a little off my wood tapers for years, gets a little more glue in there for better contact.

How long are your tapers?  Think those should accept about 7/8" tapers.

I measure the taper depth of the field point first   :knothead:   Some brands are 1" some are 1 1/4".  Some are even 7/8".  I have my taper jig set to make 1 1/4" tapers.  If the taper depth of the field point is less than that just cut off what you don't need.  It ain't rocket science   :p   ...Van

Precision Design Products brand of points are tapered deeper.  They are stamped with PDP.  I thought that was the points that Three Rivers sold.

I like those PDPs.  The taper depth is 1 1/4".  At least all the ones I have are...Van

Gordon, I thought so too. But the last bunch I bought don't have the PDP stamped on them.

Wapiti, I had the same problem with some 190 field tips a while back. I contacted 3 Rivers, and said I wanted PSP points...never had that problem with them. I want my taper going all the way forward whether I am shooting a field tip, broadhead, or Judo. I refuse to cut my tapers just because of inferior quality control on lesser-quality tips. Nothing but PSP! 3 Rivers  said I could send them back for a refund. I asked them why they stock this product if it isn't fitting correctly. Just my two cents! Jeff Cooper

Sorry, That is PDP not PSP!
