I just "graduated" from the detention setting out to patrol with the Sheriffs' department. Just wondering how many fellow cops are trad shooters.
Plenty.
Federal LEO Supervisor here.US Customs and Border Protection.

Carried a Badge for 22 years.
Natrona County, Wyoming Deputy.
Now retired
I am a former NJ PO and my son is on the job now too. Good luck, stay safe and get your 25 in.
Gil
I'm neighberhood speed patrol. These redneck NASCAR fans drive too fast on my road and I let them know it. Does that count?
That's awesome! I only have to put in 18 before full retirement. I started late (was a pastor for a while). Almost 40 and showin the young guys a thing or two.
Owlbait- just mark their cars with a paintball gun as they drive by. Easier to ID that way. (just kidding).
Trad shooting seems to help diffuse the stress from the job. Except when I cant hit the target, then it only builds. :-)
Any other advice for an "old rookie", working in a large county with a blend of quiet agricultural communities and miniature "gangland" trying to establish itself?
In my 28th year here in NH, 3 in Alaska before that........advice......don't let gangs get established, and don't think "it can't happen here".......
Be safe,
David
Im In the police academy now only 5 months left Its a 1 year program.
I was a Police Officer for 20 years in Watertown,NY..retired in 1996 as the K-9 Supervisor and certified K-9 trainer....Stay safe young man....Mike
18 years and counting. Currently a patrol sergeant for Mono County Ca. Worked in Utah also as a State Trooper and PD officer.
Be proactive in the community. Address the little problems so they don't get to be big problems....your best weapon is your mind. Have something to look forward to off duty. Hunting has been a saving grace for me and shooting my longbows and recurves is therapy for my soul.
Stay true, stay safe,
Craig
Seriously considering it . . .Not sure yet if I could deal with the politics involved. But it is definitely an option for me right now! Then there is always the military :p
Thank you all for your service.
Ron
Retiring in 11 days. Remember to keep a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, commendations, recommendations, etc...
Believe me you will look back 22 years from now, and see that you did make a difference.
Also treat everyone with respect, even the bad guys-before and after arresting/dealing with them (but always remember Officer safety!).
God Bless, and be safe.
May Saint Michael watch over and protect you.
Duane
I work for the Dept of Juvenile Justice, at Burnside Group home here in KY, work as a counselor, all our kids have addiction problems, nearly 11 years on the job, love it more all the time if it wasnt for Politics. I used to have hair before I did this though.
28 fun filled years on the job.
another one here
6 years right here.
Darren
OwlBait,
That is why I carry tennis balls in my pocket.
Matt
I'm not a sworn officer - but have been with the Nebraska State Patrol for 37+ years in Communications - does that count??
11 years North Carolina
Craig,
Of course Communications count! Without you we wouldn't be very effective. My wife was a dispatcher until we moved from Utah, then I convinced her one LEO in our family was enough. But she STILL tells me "where to go"! :jumper:
Craig
(your name is easy to remember)
.....and ya all really just wanted to be firemen. That's OK though!
Was a reserve Police officer for about 5 years and im also still a reserve Deputy going on 7 years . Alot of folks ask me why I dont go full time but I just wanted to give back to the country and community in some way and this is what I chose to do .
I for one commend you on your service to your state and community.
Although i did get a ticket 2 weeks ago going 71 in a 45 but he went easy on me.
Heck Joe I got one a month ago 50 in a 35 , I hadnt had a ticket in over 22 years so I thought the YOUNG officer would give me a break BUT he didnt . I just told him thank you and I hope and pray I could return the favor someday .
Mike
Retired detective with 31 years on the job. Retired in 2004.
Danny why not Arizona or Texas? Elk, deer, hogs and javalena. There has to something you really like in Guam. Ha!
I know a couple of good ones from Ohio. Mike Gerardi (Arrow k9) and Tim Mullen(Molson).
Morning star- God made cops so firemen would have heroes too!
I don't know about that Dan. I was a police officer in a urban city. We were protective of the firemen. We would get real mad when people would through rocks and bottles at them when they would fight a fire. Especially since they were there just trying to help people.
I was helped by firemen two times trying to get out of burning buildings. It always seemed like when we were running out they were running in.
Having said that, they sure did get paid well and have a lot more time off than us. 24 on 72 off. With vacation, seniority and holidays, I think they had to work a whole 60 days per year. Mike I couldn't let you get completely away with that remark! Ha!
Gil
PS - Mike I see you are in Iowa. I think you owe it to police officers to find a few spots in Iowa to hunt deer for us. Especially for all the stress from having to protect you guys. I had to let you have one more little one before I sign off.

Rich thats what some people in Jersey are about. They will even take your gear out of an ambulance at a motor vehicle accident just to sell it,even though you are helping others.Thats why Im moving!
I am classified under law enforcement but I deal with the dead,They don't talk back and have attitudes.
Poverty, lack of education, over crowding, high crime and a hot summer. The firemen would also represent a figure of authority. Occassionaly the people would strike out at authority (I think the firemen took a few lumps that were meant for us). It didn't happen often but when it did, we would try our best to send Timothy some business. Ha! Only kidding, well maybe not totally.
That was also a long time ago and I hope it has gotten better today than back then.
Gil
5 yrs Correctional Officer.... 11 yrs. Deputy Sheriff... Only 10 more to go..Trust me things are only getting worse...
Does Corrections Officer count? If so I'm in my sixth year and still love it. Never a dull moment!!
Sheriff Elect, taking office December 1st. 23 years as a deputy/detective/sergeant/narc. Great see so many brother LEO's here.
Gil,
Retired from the Navy here and got this job. Been trying to get a transfer but non existant if the agency is paying the move, cannot afford to move myself,LOL.
Retired detective. Did 25 yrs, 3 days and 6 hours but who's counting. Working major cases got to me so I retired Feb 29th, 2000 and haven't looked back.
In my opinion corrections officers count. In my state they can carry and have police powers. Plus I couldn't take being locked up in there. I would feel like I was a prisoner.
My first partner on the job was a corrections officer before coming onto the PD. I had to listen to his war stories. I much rather have lived the war stories we told as police officers than correction officers.
Today all branches of law enforcement, corrections, EMS and fire fighters need to all think of themselves as brothers. I watched the twin towers fall and went to volunteer. I couldn't get in, but I tried for three days and walked the perimeter trying to get access. If you saw what happened at that site you might feel the way I do. All service areas lost. The people cheered when the volunteers walked out of the dust. The steel workers were unsung heroes that day too. It was beautiful to see how all peoples came together at that time. Made me feel good about Americans.
Gil
Dan I hope you can make the move. I would help out a little if you have a discount sale on a few of those Harrisons you had! Ha!
Gil
US ARMY Military Police 1990-1994.
Danny maybe you can re-enlist in the national guard in the state of your choice and they will pay the move? theirs always witness protection.
20 years and counting Honolulu Police Department.
Jerry
Jerry, Have you ever run into Dog the Bounty hunter...LOL I had to ask
A couple of times...the Dog is a real character  but Beth just plain scares me :scared: :D
Book him Danno - murder one!
Sorry Jerry the little kid in me couldn't help himself! I bet you have heard that a few times.
That seems like a beautiful place to be in Law Enforcement.
Gil
Surely I'm not the only Game Warden on here.
Someone just blew their cover
Gil it gets better....I work the North shore of Oahu. Surfing beaches, sunshine and sand.
Jerry
Gil, I know exactly how you feel when you talk about the towers, I was there and will never forget that day. Myself and 23 other officers from my department volunteered to respond to a hotline requesting help from NYPD after the first tower was hit. We were 45 minutes north of the NYC line. We were there for over a week . There were alot of heroes that day and it was extremely emotional seeing the residents of the city lining the streets holding signs thanking all the services that came to help. You're right, it wasn't about whether you were a cop, a fireman an emt etc it was about being an American.
33 YEARS IN L.E. EVERYTHING FROM SERVING ON THE BOMB SQUAD, RIOT SQUAD, SWAT, FIREARMS TRAINER, FIELD TRAINING, ACADEMY INSTRUCTOR, PATROL SUPERVISOR; THEN WENT BACK TO SCHOOL, BECAME A COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR, TAUGHT IN PRISON SYSTEM FOR TEN YEARS. IT WAS A HELL OF A FUN CAREER. NOW RETIRED, STILL ENJOYING LIFE.
22 years with Arlington, TX PD and the Tarrant County (Fort Worth, TX) Criminal DA's Office as Coordinator of Special Crimes Unit. Retired, went into corporate security and spent the next 18 years as Director of Corporate Security for Belo Corporation, a media company that owns 7 newspapers and 18 TV stations across the US. Got out of the fast lane and have been driving a school bus since.

Been there Gil.
Just finishing up my thirtieth year here. I'm with you knobbymag and Al Natural.
14 Years as a corrections officer.Half way to retirement. :banghead:
Fed LEO... After 10 years military it just made sense for me to be able to use all that time towards retirement. I have 10yrs the job, with another 10 or 12 to go...
But you fine fellows patrolling the street are the real heroes... Thanks for all you do!!!
I spent 14 years in law enforcement before a third knee surgery forced a job change. I spent the last 21 years as a teacher, just retired last month. I can't wait for fall when everyone else goes back to work and I go hunting LOL!
My dad is also a retired cop.
18 years with Tulsa PD Gang Unit. Hopefully I'll live long enough to retire some day!
Two years Naval Special Warfare type until I lost the majority of the 3000-6000 decibal range in my left ear. Only option was to change my MOS or get an Honorable discharge-which I did. After being pissed at the world for a couple months, I joined the local Sheriff's Office and within a short time I was an operator on the SWAT Team-entry element first, them sniper for the past 8years of tour. A late 2009 rotator cuff tear during the execution of a search warrant an subsequent surgery resigned me to "pass the torch" to the young guns. I currently am the senior detective assigned to the Organized Crime/ Narcotics Unit. In total, I have 16 yrs on and 5 to go until I'm eligible for drop.
15 years corrections officer, 20 years part time police officer.
15 years as a game warden until a family situation required a move and change to a biologist position. I still miss chasing the wildlife bandits.
spent 6 years doing drug work...got to see some pretty wierd stuff...some of which I will NEVER forget! Lots of stories to tell around a campfire though.
6 years as a Sheriff's Deptuty. K9 handler of a single purpose lab named Trigger.
Glad to see so many cops on this site!
Jered Congrats on getting elected. You need a Chief or Major ??? LOL
I'm also glad to see there are so many officers on this site and say "Thank you". But I have to ask the question, am I the only smart one who's a fireman? Started my 10th year on the 4th of June. Lord willing I've got 20years and 11 months to go.
-Jeremy

Thank You!! to all who have served our country and communities I for one am proud to share this space with you.
Oh and 10 years in CA Dept. of Corrections as a correctional officer until I blew 3 discs in my back forcing an early job change. But I too have many interesting stories from those 10 years at a Max. Security Prison secured housing unit.

Glad to hear it, Al Natural and Ranger44.
I'm part of this crazy brotherhood also. Looking forward to doing a lot more hunting in a few years. Stay Safe brothers and sisters!
Retiered with 35 years and I am now a fish whisperer.
Craig Schoneberg , One of my best friends is a Captain at the State Parol Acad. His name is Mike Kerby; do you know him ?
At nineteen, I started as a correctional officer,
now 18 years later, I'm still counting down the 12 more years until I can retire.
This is why I originally got into archery, because with this type of job, I knew I needed a hobby, and didn't like golf, so I decided to try archery as a stress relief...what a great sport/hobby to help me keep my sanity! :clapper:
 Sent for each of you to remain safe.

Good thing there's more money coming in the front door than going out the back door! :) Commissioned thru St Louis City as a Corporate Security Advisor. Carrying under HR 218 is SWEET since I live in IL.
Congrats Jerod on being the High Shirive! You're to damn young to be a Sheriff!

Sad news today fellas. Today a 32 year old NJ State Trooper, married with two children, took his own life in his unmarked unit at 7:30 AM. We all know the stresses the job brings. I pray for him and his family.

started out in 1983 as Army MP, been a cop since, currently a Detective, Murfreesboro, Tn PD.
I had NO idea there was this many cops on Tradgang. Kinda of funny, LOL

Quarter Master for a Military Police Company in the Canadian Army

18 years of it. Now I'm the Lt in charge of Patrol spending my time sitting in my office wishing I was back on the road!
Yea - a little. Come on down to the Border - we'll give you an education. H
Ontario Provincial Police 25 year veteran

I teach a grade 5/6 class. Does that count?
Ben it doesn't count until college when they are old enough for you to legally hit them back!
I did it for a little over 3 yeas back on the 70's...
Hey Bow50 back then we had a saying, yesterday I couldn't even spell detective and today I are one.
I recently took a job as a vocational instructor in a medium security prison. Does that count?
There is a bunch of us donut eaters on the "gang".
Deaddoc444, Thats what I do for N.J. Swiper I have to go to the M.E. office in Newark(East orange Ave) every Wednesday, I feel for what you have to deal with in that place.
and what exactly does this have to do with traditional archery??
It's about how no matter what field you you are in Traditional archery brings us together. And it's good to know people in that field who you can shoot with at a police convention.JMHO
South Carolina Highway Patrol for 16 years... I have 9 left to go, not that anyone's counting!
Vaughn I guess the person that started it was just trying to see if there other people in his profession on this site intrested in Traditional archery. Maybe we can ask Terry if we could have a TGBB thread like TGMM. We can call it Tradgang Brothers in Blue (TGBB). Then it could remain private and not offend you. It seems like there are many on this site.
Gil
The word "enforcement" has always given me that oogey feeling. I truly think that word all by itself has destroyed not only the public's view of cops in general, but the overall mentality of cops in general--particularly the young ones. Just sayin.
So, how many here are crane operators? How about framers? Any lawyers? Dentists?

There are also lots of other professions here. If someone had started a thread with any of the professions I listed above, it would have been deleted immediately and a reprimand issued to the evil person who started it. Whats the difference really?
Realizing I responded to the thread, deadsmple made me realize the mistake. Many times I have seen threads moved or deleted because they weren't directly related to traditional bowhunting.
22 years with Stanislaus County Sheriffs, retired in Dec. of 2007.Now full-time bowyer.Good luck and be careful.
Yes Newark, NJ is an interesting city to work for.
Stay alert, Stay alive!!
My heart goes out to the N.J. State Troopers family.
Maybe its just the relationship between certain professions and traditional archery. Doubt seriously that there would be 8 pages of responses from dentists. Also shows the character of the people that are attracted to the sport. Just my opiion.
I guess I would wonder why somebody would care what the thread has to do with trad archery. Its a thread that clearly has some interest to the members. :archer2:
Im one of them "OOGEY" guys, 13 years worth og "OOGINESS".Mostly cause I love my family, my community and country and every 8 hours of work makes them all a little safer or at least as safe when I started the shift.
I started this thread out of curiosity, and to build some relations ships with people who deal with the same things I do. I apologize to dead simple, feel free to delete this thread if its not allowed.
Oh and by the way...I kan spel jst fine..it's teh tipin thets bad... :_)
I been around a while. I like the idea of maybe a different forum we can share stories among each other. Maybe even meet up at Compton sometime. Take care. Be safe
IPcjon2 YUp it is a bit on the weary side We probalby know a lot of the same people STay Safe!!!!!!!!! Dan
A connection I made when I read the title and saw the responses.
As I Deputy Sheriff I went to work knowing I might have to use deadly force.
The knowledge and ability to do so has a corelation to hunting. The tools are different but the mind set is similar. That might be why there are so many of us here.
Prarrie Dog
Greenhed, no apologies necessary. I was just pointing out the fact that this is a trad archery forum and a persons chosen profession has no real bearing. The common thread here is the fact that we all enjoy traditional archery in one way or another, all our other differences are irrelevant in my opinion.
Thanks ton all you guys for you're service, we need more of you.
USPP
I am amazed at the numbers. I love this thread. I am not an officer. My son in law is. I thank God there are people willing to ENFORCE the law on those that need it for the benefit of all. I appreciate all of you. I'm glad we have traditional archery as just one common interest.
Marshal, 18 years law enforcement.

21 years Deputy Sheriff
Law Enforcement and Fire Fighters are different then other professions. We are "Brothers of the badge", We depend on each other every day.

Somebody (smarter than me) count up the number of LEO/Public safety guys on these posts. It would be interesting to see the number of Tradgangers that are also in the profession.
How'd I miss this one?????

I've been with Kansas City PD for 27 years and out of those I've had a canine for a partner for 23 years. It's been four partners, Rico,Simon, Laica and now with Taz. Wish it could have been one and the same. Looking to retire in a year or two. I've been into traditional since about 1990.
8 years in 5 with current agency. 15 more (maybe 11 if I buy time) and I'm out.
I spent 14 years in law enforcement before a bad knee forced me to find a new career: teaching high school and middle school. LEO was good preparation for the classroom, LOL! My dad is also a retired police officer.
6 years of the force in New Hampshire...
12 yrs in NY state corrections.
Used to be, 7 years as a police officer in the Northern Territory, before i quit and we moved due to my youngest daughter's health problems. I am now a stay at home dad.

Man there sure are alot of COPS into Trad.... I started in 1983 US Army MP, currently a Police Detective with Murfreesboro, Tn. PD and 8 years till retirement. Been there, done that for the most part but shooting my bow is the most fun for me......

Thirty-on years with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Been retire eleven years mow.
Retired after 27 years as a Senior Special Agent USSS. Still working contractually for the Service but I can pick and choose assignments! Accrued a few air miles over the years.

29 years with our City PD, about 5 to go. Lots of good days, some bad, but I can't imagine ever doing anything else.
6 years local part-time, going on 1 year for Federal Corrections. Being a LEO is something that gets into your blood-either you love it or hate it! My biggest concern/goal in this field is that all my brothers in blue go home at night.

14 years of patrol
Corrections Officers don't count?? Then who gives us the authority to enforce and MAKE the rules?
12yr C/O myself.
I scored pretty high on the entrance exam, so the city I work for offered me a Firefighters job instead. Haha
24 years and counting at a large Sheriff's Office around Tampa Fl. Front row seat to the greatest show on earth some days, other days not so much. Have been afforded the opportunity to attend some of the best training in the world...leadership and otherwise...none of it holds a candle to good ole country boy common sense. Doesn't surprise me to find lots of LEO's on here.
Serving since 1989, patrol division commander for dept. of 16. Work with some phenomenal people and lucky enough to work for a very supportive community. Consider myself very blessed. After 18 years of thirds took the promotion, drive a desk and work Mon-Fri. 7-3, weekends and holidays off......crazy!!
4 Years Border Patrol. Left to finish school and start a family. About to go back Federal.
Corrections Officer for the State. I have been for 12 years. Half way done only 12 years more to go. The first half as went fast. Be safe everyone!
Just stumbled onto this. I am not totally surprised by the number of LEO on here. Since 1998 for me. Some days seems like I've been doing this forever, other days it seems like I just started. Currently living the dream as a dayshift patrol sergeant.
As somone else posted- having a hobby like traditional archery is a great thing. It can be the perfect release to a stress filled day, or if you shoot like me, it can just add to the frustration.
Be smart, be professional and Stay Safe out there.
I've been a corrections officer for 22years if that counts, Some police officers call us baby sitters. Good luck I hope you enjoy.
20 years in corrections, retired now. THANK GOD!
