Title: Bad Medicine
Post by: Bill Spangler on June 14, 2010, 04:05:00 PM
I want to have a bow in my Truck for whenever I get a chance to shoot but I've heard tell that leaving a bow in a vehicle is "Bad Medicine". Do any of you have a bow in your vehicle at all times? Or, is this just not happening?

Thanks.

Bill

Leaving a bow strung in the vehicle is bad medicine. Leaving your bow unstrung and cased...I don't see a problem unless you are in one of the hot states and your bow could delaminate from the heat.
I've been known to leave my bow in the back of my truck, in the camper shell, unstrung and cased in the California summer. No issues.

I have seen the evidence of bows being left in a vehicle on a hot day and strung. It will make you cry. Unstring it, case it, and keep it covered. I am not sure what the damaging temperature is for most bows but I try to keep mine away from any significant heat. I also use a blanket to avoid direct sunlight contact.

I unstring my bow and wrap it in a sleeping bag. Leave the window cracked a bit and the vent in the open position. When I unwrap it it is not hot. I't behind the seat so no direct sunlight either. Only when I have to - not to just drive around with it.

Don't want to do that here in Texas unless you are curing a sinew backed selfbow.  LOL

Great if you are building anything you want to heat, I use my truck as a heat box, actually a guitar is curing in there right now as I am typing this . . . makes the truck smell like a shop for a couple trips, but it does the job!!!!

In all seriousness it scares me when I leave a bow in the truck, especially since I am really using it as a heat box, lol.  BUT I just unstring them wrap em in a blanket and tuck them under the back seat, SO far(knock on wood), no problems!!!

Thank you everyone for the replies. I was afraid the post might get bumped for being "stupid" or irrelevant. I keep my bows unstrung always. The bow used would be a 1960's vintage Green Bear Fiberglass recurve. This bow was given to me by a friend and that's how I got started. Now my 15yo Son and I have several, one being a new Hill Sirrocco at 60# that I am unable to shoot do to shoulder surgery recently. Whoops, I digress.

Thanks for the help.

I believe that in some states it might be illegal to have a strung bow and arrows in the cab of your truck. Check your local laws

IL would fall under that unless it was cased.

I left my Blacktail in the truck on and off for three months in AK and it twisted a limb, but after a while, it straightened back out...I feel lucky.  Take care of  your investment, I'll never do that again.
