Title: help with carbon set up
Post by: kbaamigo on June 14, 2010, 01:32:00 PM
I am new to carbon and got some 5575 blems to try. I am shooting a Pronghorn longbow 60# @ 29.5". I like my magnus 1 (200 gr with alum adapter) so what would be an estimate for shaft length and insert weight? I can also use steel adapters for the head to get 235 or 260 gr. Too many variables for me coming from wood. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Kent,,,according to Stu Miller's calculator, you wouldn't need to add anymore weight than the standard insert with the 200 grain head.  You would be borderline weak with 200 grains.  This is assuming that the bow is center cut and that you draw to 29.5 inches.  You didn't give quite enough info.  Assuming the bow is centercut and you draw 29.5 inches, an arrow cut 30 inches long with the 200 grain head would put you within about 4 lbs.  i've just started using the calculator and plugging in my arrows after trial and error, and i got them to where i wanted them to be.  If you cut them 29.75 they would be about dead on assuming everything else is correct.  i would probably start longer and trim down and see what you come up with.  Hope this helps a little.

Sorry, I would say the bow is 3/16 off center so I would need a slightly weaker spine?

Nope, that would put it pretty close to where you need to be.  Start out longer than 30 and work down from there either bareshafting or using a big old 2 blade.
