I went out tonight for a little deer hunting on a kill permit. One deer walked by and one is in the freezer. However, the rest of this post is about my little Buddy who helped put it in the freezer.  Happy the deer trailing dog. Rick, a hunting friend of mine, spent about four training sessions with Happy when I shot a deer and we called her in. She strolled right up to it. And from then on she tracked everything anyone shot. Then I shot another deer and since I had to go to a ceremony at Arlington later that day we called on our faithful tracker, Happy. She didn't seem to be tracking,she just sort of strolled up to the deer. Then she just quit cold. She refused to track anything.  So tonight when I shot my deer and blood looked sparse we thought; What do we have to lose, so we summoned the self-retired Happy. After an exhuberant start on who knows what trail she settled down and got on the real trail. It took about thirty to forty minutes to settle her down but when she got going she just walked right up. We have decided that she is either back in the game or she really likes me and just wants to track my deer.

I always admire veterinarians more than people doctors. People can tell the doc that they have heartburn, or their bunions hurt, or that they are depressed. A vet, and a dog's best friend have to guess.

Is there an obvious reward for Happy when she finds the deer?

Is she in perfect health? Was she reluctant during weather patterns that were not conducive to tracking? Was it uncomfortably warm?

My dog slows considerably in the summer heat, but an opportunity to chase something always picks her up. Sometimes she gets bored with a game we are playing, and quits, wants to do something else.

You know your dog best, I am just throwing out ideas. I don't know squat about training tracking dogs, but am a little cognizant of things that might throw a dog off.

Happy isn't my dog My dogs I just threw out of the house since they keep bringing pieces of deer in to eat.  Although I am thinking about getting my lady trained up.  My dog trainer friend says it would be a piece of cake.  I don't know why she quit tracking.  But she is obviously back.

Any guy who thinks he is going to get his lady trained is clearly off his nut.

I was just talking about that this morning with my girl friend. What kind are you looking for Chuck? Any type better for tracking deer? That was a good one Killdeer!
