Title: Wow talk about Hill bows!
Post by: Gil Verwey on June 12, 2010, 04:12:00 PM
If you like Hill longbows check out this one Rick just sold me. This is one that will stick around my rack for a long time! The following is from Rick's ad.

"68" 69# @ 28". Howard Hill Wesley Special that is skip-line checkered on the Ebony riser which isn't offered any longer from Hill. Also silver inlays. One side a standing Bear, the other a Bear paw. Rattle snake skins on the back too. Super nice looking bow. Tillered for split finger. The grip is very slightly dished."

Thanks Rick.

Gil

My jealousy is somewhat tempered by the fact that I probably couldn't pull that one back.  What a beautiful longbow and a great deal!!!

Thanks guys. I always wanted the checkered Hill. I spoke to Craig about them last year. I forgot what years they were made. Does anybody know off the top of your head?

Thanks

All this talk recently has really got me wanting to try a heavy D bow.  Sucks to be broke.

That bow's a beaut, btw.

Yea, the more i see and hear the more I feel like giving a Hill or Hill style bow a try.

You either love longbows or hate them. If you like them, you will like a Hill. They are very reasonable new or used.

I agree with Gil. As soon as I shot my 55# Hill I realized I was hooked.

Wow I got the Hill today and what a bow. It is nicer than the pictures. It feels all of 69# but shoots like it is heavier. The bow isn't marked so I have to call Craig to find out the specs. This was a limited addition Hill. It is called Standing Bear. I will let you know what I found out. Much less hand shock than I anticipated and much faster than I anticipated.

I had a lot of Hills and liked them a lot. This one really spits an arrow and I was surprised because of the weight of the bow, that it didn't jolt me more than it did. I put in a question to Craig about the bow. I can't wait to find out the story behind this bow.

I had a bunch of Wesleys that I loved. I shot a Ron Maulding Big Horn D style longbow for 30 years. Ron built that bow for me in the early 80s. I like Craig's bows better than most out there making Hill style bows, including Schulz.

I traded a Schulz for two Hills and I felt like the winner on that deal. There was one Tembo I had that was made by John Schulz which was also one the best Hills I had.

Nice bow, Gil.  And silly me, I thought you were fully converted to being a Harrison man now, lol.

Wish I could shoot that poundage.  Even with my 54# Hill my bad shoulder tells me I shouldn't get too excited about bows much over that weight. But pretty bows are like pretty girls, you can't help but look at em'even if all you can do is sigh and appreciate.

Tony I am a Harrison man. I had to buy this Hill as soon as I saw it though.

I was just out shooting my El Lobo and nothing compares to the crocodile Lobo. Today when the Hill arrived I also got a Siberian from Bob Walker. If there wasn't a Jack Harrison, I would be shooting a Hill. I won't tell you how many Harrisons I have now (12), you would think I was nuts, but I just can't help myself. I am looking for one to match my crocodile El Lobo and have come close but no cigars yet.

Tony did we speak about the light weight HSS takedown I have? Someone wanted it in the spring but I can't find the PMs or emails.

Thanks
Gil

Gil, we've spoken in the past about your prior Hills and at one point (can't remember exactly when) I was looking for a lighter TD Harrison...but then realized that I can't afford one, lol.  They be nice bows but I couldn't stand the big hole in my empty pocket if I bought one.  I still have a handful of bows that I like so I'm content, but maybe someday I'll look at Harrisons again.

Tony I think the person was from Colorado. I don't have any for sale, but he asked a few times and he wanted it in the spring. I was going to sell it to him for what I paid for it. I didn't want him to think I forgot about him but I cleaned up my PMs. I remember we talked in the past but I am getting old and have trouble remembering what I had for breakfast!

I don't blame you, if you are shooting a Hill. They are nice bows. I hunted with a Hill style longbow for a long time and tried many others. This Hill I just picked up reminds me of a lot memories in the field with my old bow. When it comes down to it all you need is one bow and two strings! I tried to do that a while ago and got down to one bow. I even said I was going to change my handle to "One Bow Two Strings". That lasted about 5 days. No will power. I have empty pockets.

Well Craig got back to me about the bow. Also Dick answered a PM. Thanks Craig and Dick. This bow was custom made for Bill Haney. He requested that the weight and serial number not be put on the bow. The bow is about 15 years old. The skins were put on after Bill got the bow. Bill had a lot of options in the bow. The checkering was done by Craig's son in law. His son in law relocated to further his education. When he left Craig couldn't find anyone local at a reasonable price to continue to do it.

There it is. I am glad Bill didn't have the weight put on the bow. I might make some money at a local archery club betting the speed of this bow against other bows. It may pay for itself. Ha!

Thanks
Gil
