Title: New Mexico draw results
Post by: coolpapabill on June 11, 2010, 02:27:00 PM
I finally had great results in the New Mexico hunting draw
this year. Pulled both an Elk and Deer bow tag in Unit 52,
as well as the Antelope bow hunt August.

How did others that put in do?

I am curious, because we don't have draws for such common animals.  We get draws on goats, sheep and moose though.  Are the game really that scarce in those areas?

No most  game is not scarce at all,  the New Mexico Game
and Fish Department has just continued to add different
species into the NM  draw lottery list. With few exceptions like
Bear, Turkey, and Lion if you don't pull a tag, you don't hunt.

Michael,

You have draw for bull elk in most of the state and many draw buck deer tags on the east side.

I Spent most of my life in Washington state.  Oh for the old over the counter days.

wingnut,

Honestly, these days we can take Bull Elk and bucks anywhere, you have a draw for a second one though.  These days they have a draw so you can have year round hunting (hunt any season with any weapon you choose, subject to restrictions), so things are getting good I guess.

My first deer was a Blacktail in Klickitat county, just south of Mt. Adams. Man the place was thick with deer back then!

Looks like some decent quality hunt draws still available.

I came up empty handed.  Now I have to decide on an OTC unit (tried this twice and both times were horrible), or pony up more cash to for a landowner tag or hunt something else.

Bush, check the OTC tags in Colorado, some quality hunts there.

I drew unit 52 elk also!  Pretty excited, first time hunting in NM with a friend from Santa Fe.

I drew a unit 36 mule deer tag for the January hunt.  Hoping to catch the tail end of the rut action.

CoolPapaBill, I was checking the Colorado OTC hunts on the CO website, and it has some good information.  I was thinking about maybe unit 75/751...any reason you would kill that idea?  or maybe a better recommendation in a unit?

Best of luck for everyone who drew a tag.

I drew 52 also with my 3rd choice. I've hunted that area several times but it's been well over 10 years since the last time.

I remember lot's of elk, a few big bucks and a nice antelope herd in one area.

I drew a second season archery elk tag for unit 34!  I killed a small bull last year, this year I am going to be a little more picky.  I even have another Mohawk on the way just for the job. I am very fortunate to draw two years in a row.  I have gone as many as 5 years with no elk tag.

Bush, plenty of elk in that area. Pagosa Springs and Durango
are pretty nice towns as well.

BSBD and ryped maybe we should try and hookup. We hunt in
52 almost every year. We 'll be camping at Hopewell Lake.

coolpapabill,

That sounds like a good idea.

I hunted all over the unit, including 50 when they used to combine the 2.

I remember hunting near Broke Off Mountain the most. Let's all keep in touch.
