Title: Didn't draw an Elk tag, What now?
Post by: Bush on June 09, 2010, 05:27:00 PM
Well, I didn't draw an elk tag this year.  Bummer...any ideas on other hunts I can do out west?  I was thinking about maybe an aoudad hunt out on the caprock in Texas.

Out of state Elk licence for Washington is $432.00, and we have a bunch all over.  I have seen many and "harvested" none yet, but this is a new year.

Colorado has lots of good units with unlimited over-the-counter elk tags.

What the heck is a aoudad hunt?

Don't forget the 2010 Trad Gang elk hunt that Larry(Papa Bear) is organizing. Might be worth checking into, plus you'll get to meet some tradgangers.

Wannabe1, I am glad you asked... Rick, are you telling me you can take more then one Elk per season?  Zbearclaw, do you know how many tule tags they give out a year (or at least this year)?

Seriously, fly out to Washington and hook up with a local trad archery elk hunter who knows the areas you want to hunt.  The entire state has lots of elk, lots of big bulls and antlerless areas as well.   The tag and license are reasonable and the elk are here for the hunting.  I have seen herds of big bulls hanging out pre-season in every area I have hunted over 30 years I hunted this area. I put the wife 20 feet from a 6 X 6 Bull last year.  To bad it was two days before early elk season started.  She also had a yearling at 18 yards broadside and looking away 10 minutes later.  At the time were were inside a loosely grouped herd of about 20 head.

Clay, don't you practically live next door to the Mount St. Helen herd?  I hear wild stories about the size of the bulls in that herd and I so want to be among them (with a very sharp broadhead on my bow).

I envy each and every one o you who live out west.  Here we are over run with whitetales, but in the southern part, it is hard to get permission, and in the northern part, the deer are more spread out.  I just wish this pig explosion thing the state DNR keeps talking about happens soon.  It would be fun to hunt free range hogs here in MI

Oregon, Washington and Utah have OTC hunts.

I love just to go out into the wilderness and be with the guys, but all the OTC units I have ever tried have been horrible.  All three times I saw way more hunters than I did animals.

Larry had us in action evertime we went out last year.

Yes, I live close to the Mount Saint Helens  herd and the bulls are huge, that unit is draw tag only hunting so a lot more get to grow big.  You may see other hunters in Washington but with our brush on the west coast you will only see them on the roads walking.  If your willing to scout and cross country a bit it is very easy to get on a lot of elk and some huge bulls at that with no competition.

Another option is Coues wt in AZ. Archery tags are OTC. Very tough hunt, but very fun.

Has anybody tried the Sitka blacktail hunt on Kodiak Island?  I have always wanted to that.  I just looked, and I can get airfare to Kodiak for about the same amount I was going to spend on a NonRes elk tag in NM.

I hunted the same area last year and saw a lot of elk, unless you really want a monster, average Bull is 5 pt, 250", but some larger. the unit is all walk in and 3pt or better, or antlerless, with an average 15% success rate....
I will also be fishing for salmon in the local river.
Nearby is an Island that is Archery Only, loaded with Bear and some Elk....
